I waited a while to write this review because I wanted to make sure that it was fair but I also felt I should warn others of my experience. When looking for a caterer for my wedding, I went with Selma's because I had heard nothing but glowing reviews and pricing seemed very reasonable. However, if I were to change one thing about my wedding, it would be the caterer.
1) I didn't receive the final invoice until two weeks AFTER the wedding (while I was on my honeymoon)! I got a rough price break down ~9 months pre-wedding but it was for an entirely different menu/serving style and I had no idea how similar the pricing for my dinner would be. Menu and pricing were all supposed to be finalized a month prior to the wedding, but despite weeks of calling and emailing I still didn't how much I would have to pay. The week of my wedding I stopped by Selma's TWICE in an attempt to learn how much I was paying/actually pay her. I had even tried calling in advance hoping someone would be available but even when I showed up in person none of the employees knew how to help me.
2) They served multiple foods that I had requested not to have. I am not a picky eater at all but there were a couple of requests I had. One example: I wanted broccoli topped with shredded cheese not cheese sauce because I was worried about getting it on my dress. Guess who spent 15 minutes in the bathroom trying to get cheese sauce out of her dress? They also served the one type of cake I requested not to have.
3) The bartender approached me during dinner to tell me that we were almost out of alcohol. I couldn't fathom that my guests (who were all drinking rather lightly) had gone through most of the alcohol within 90 minutes but I recruited my father-in-law and he ran to the nearest liquor store and loaded up. Then the bartender comes back up to me and reports that he found the rest of the liquor in the kitchen and it turns out we had only gone through 1/4. Not only did this add a lot of unnecessary stress to the dinner but it caused my father-in-law to miss the cutting of the cake, first dance, and several other special moments.
There were a few other mishaps along the way that I just shrugged off because things happen! Selma's did do a great job of setting everything up and cleaning at the end of the night. That being said, I was extremely disappointed in the communication and how the actual dinner went overall. I am glad that most people have great experiences with Selma's but, unfortunately, I can't foresee ever recommending her services.
The food and service were wonderful! They even stayed around during the reception to help clean up. If you are looking for a catering company who provides more than just great food - Selma's is the way to go!
The food from Selma's was fantastic! All of my guests loved it, I was complimented on my food choices repeatedly. We had two stations one with grilled chicken and masted potato bar and one with tacos and Hispanic items. They staff managed that wonderfully and repeated refilled the items that went empty. They kept a low profile and didn't interfere with the event. Selma was very nice on the first time I dealt with her, I didn't talk to her again after that but the woman I worked with, Lindsay, was great! She was so helpful and answered my questions within the day. She offered me multiple options for all the things I needed and was always ready if I wanted to add more. She really made the experience for me. My last comment is that I gave them a head count of about 10 people more than expected and we had basically no food left because so many people got seconds and thirds so I'd say the consensus was the food was awesome!
Selma did a phenomenal job catering our wedding. We live outside of Kentucky and were hoping to have a unique wedding reception that tied in my time living in Japan as well as my family's Kentucky roots. My husband is a pescetarian and has friends who are vegan and vegetarian, so we challenged our prospective caterers on several fronts, not to mention the fact that I was in Japan for most of the wedding planning! Selma came up with an "East meets West" theme that included sushi, spring rolls, and ginger glazed carrots as our Asian influence. She then planned a West menu to include mini pulled pork sandwiches on sweet potato rolls, shaved Brussels sprouts with butternut squash, mini hot browns, prosciutto and fig flatbread, and shrimp and grits (served in adorable bamboo boats). For dessert we had chocolate chip bread pudding with bourbon sauce, and derby pie squares. In addition to all of this food, which was delicious, Selma prepared special platters for our vegans, and kid friendly dinners for our less discerning youngsters. We loved the contemporary presentation on square platters, and got so many compliments on the food, which was very reasonably priced compared to the other vendors we looked at.
The food was amazing and we were happy, but here is what really made it special for us: Selma took the time to listen and understand our ideas on how to make this a truly one of a kind wedding. She used her creativity to come up with fantastic food pairings. And she came to our wedding, making sure everything was perfect, even though she had another event to cater that same evening. Lindsay and the rest of the staff were super friendly, and Lindsay even got my husband and I our first plate of food as we entered the reception to make sure we had a chance to eat. I'm only sorry I didn't make it to the bread pudding before everyone else devoured it and said how great it was!
Thank you to Selma and her team for such a wonderful and memorable experience!
