I'm sorry to break this 5 star pattern, but I would not recommend Sydney due to her obvious inexperience. I'm not one to post too many reviews unless warranted. I'll usually let bad service slide at, let's say, a restaurant with a $100 check. This was my wedding and her services cost over 1k, so I'm not letting it go.
Hair: I showed her a picture of her own work during our trial, which was a beautiful flip under bun and braid that sat flat and rather loose on my head. She instead did a messy bun style and a harsh, tight, high braid that made my bald spots stand out. From some photos, I looked like my head was shaved. She didn't show me my hair during the process, so it was too late to do anything at the end. I'm guessing, due to the fact that she forgot her makeup kit on the day of my trial and had to reschedule it, that she forgot the little mesh piece that creates the illusion of a thick bun. Instead of admitting it, she did another style and knew she couldn't show me until it was too late. What was the point of the trial? Additionally, my best friend wanted a French braid, and she was told she couldn't do one. What? By the way, I don't really care that she rescheduled the trial and she did offer it for free with many apologies, but the reason for the rescheduling speaks volumes.
Makeup: She did my makeup first because she "had the stuff out." Don't you always have the makeup out when switching to the bride since the others in the party have their makeup done before the bride? No, she didn't have the time to swap back to hair items and didn't want to admit it. It's customary to do makeup after hair for a variety of reasons, but from my perspective, it's to keep it fresher. Regardless, she did take one of my suggestions and made me matte rather than glowy. (I was an oil slick during the trial.) She does not, however, understand undertones. Like at all. Even when I made it clear I have cool undertones and only a limited number of golds would ever work (and I hate gold which I also noted) she didn't seem to understand. She has makeup for warm undertones, which I'm told are more common than cool, but she should have both since not EVERYONE is warm. As a result, my eyeshadow was far too gold. I told her this during the trial and the day of, so she suggested a lighter color. It was still gold based. I brought my own lipstick because the kind she used during the trial came right off. Ummm how would I kiss my husband? The stuff I bought from Ulta was great by the way. I was also really pale under my eyes - that part wasn't blended well. My friend looked crazy pale. And lastly, the touch-up kits were laid out on the table, but she left without filling up the containers, so no touch-up kits for us.
It was clear that she was rushed and had somewhere else to be in the evening - she left at the exact time she said she would on the dot. Her having plans isn't my problem. I paid her for hair and makeup for my ONE day, and now I'll be unhappy with photos forever. The most shocking part is that my niece flaked out on getting her makeup done (which I paid for without complaint because it's a contractual obligation), and if she had not given up her slot, I feel like Sydney would have spent 5 minutes on me. I'm glad my niece decided against makeup.
She was less expensive than others, but you get what you pay for as they say.
