In the 1900s, sailors would make their way into town after a long stretch at sea. A boarding house, “The Anchorage” was erected to provide these voyagers with a safe place to rest their heads for the night. The Seaman’s YMCA soon took over this boarding house and accommodated up to 50,000 sailors every year until 1955. Thirty years later, the building was renovated and reopened under a new name, The Admiral Fell Inn.
