We couldn't be happier with our choice of The Athenaeum Theater at The Rathskeller as our wedding venue! From the very first meeting, we were sold when they confidently assured us, “We know how to move large groups of people around.” With both of our families being large, this was a crucial factor for us, and no other venue provided that level of assurance.
The Rathskeller offered an extensive menu of food and drink options, allowing us to truly customize our big day. Plus, the attention to detail in the proposal was impressive. They included the service charge and sales tax right from the start, which meant we had no surprise fees at the end. If you’ve spent even a few minutes on WeddingTok, you know that this level of transparency is not the norm, and many couples end up with unexpected charges. The Rathskeller’s honesty and clarity made the planning process go smoothly and stress-free.
The Athenaeum Theater is a visual showstopper, and our guests were in awe of the beautiful setting. Everyone had an incredible time celebrating with us in such a stunning venue.
Thank you, The Rathskeller, for providing financial transparency, a breathtaking venue, and seamless collaboration throughout our wedding planning. Other venues should certainly take notes! We wholeheartedly recommend The Rathskeller to any couple looking for a perfect place to celebrate their special day. You won’t be disappointed!
We had a wonderful time on our wedding day!! All of our guests enjoyed themselves. It was a time of love, joy, laughter, fellowship, and dancing the night away!!
Highly recommend the Rathskeller Grand Kellersaal Ballroom and the event planner Brooke. The Ballroom is historic and iconic Indy location. Surprised the price of downtown venue for 220 guests was budget friendly. Bride so happy to have the wedding at a place with many lifetime memories! Very easy to work with - they have seen it all. Brooke was extra patient with first time wedding planners! Fun venue - guests had a 2 hr gap between ceremony and cocktail hour, many met at the bar and restaurant. Great location downtown, guests enjoyed interesting sites near the reception. Parking was easy - lot fees behind Rathskeller were reasonable. Huge menu! Food was abundant. Attached restaurant ensured nothing ran out. Reuben dip, soft pretzels, and Spaten Optimator beer were favorites. (Flavor of grilled sirloin was good, but would not recommend steak on any buffet since it will continue to over cook and will not remain medium rare - we were warned in advance, but did it anyway!). We were allowed to bring in wedding cake and other desserts, they refrigerated it and kept dessert table stocked. Friendly bar staff. Excellent wait staff - very attentive and professional. Did not have any wedding crashers. Accidentally met previous wedding party and purchased some of their decor made specifically for the Kellersaal room. Only downside - parents could not help set up the reception at 10am and get the bride to church dressed by 12 - so find a set up team to set-up without you!
Perfect for a bride on a budget who doesn't want to sacrifice that classic look! Brooke was wonderful to work with and made sure we were all on the same page from start to finish. The food, of course, was spectacular for both the rehearsal dinner and the reception. We had both our ceremony and reception in the Damenverein Room and it felt like a fairytale. Personally, I adore the downtown location and I'm so happy we got our portraits done right outside the building. Cannot recommend enough!
Great venue for a wedding! We used the Upper Ballroom for both our ceremony and reception, and were very happy with that choice. We did have some issues with them during the planning phase, but overall it is a great place for your wedding and I recommend it!
Overall, I was very pleased with the Rathskeller. We had both the ceremony and reception in the Grand Kellersaal ballroom on a Saturday night. We worked with Josh for all the planning and logistics of the event. Josh has a very laid back personality but was very helpful answering ALL my questions leading up to the big day. He was also present the night of the wedding, along with another coordinator Abi, which was a huge help. There were a few small issues throughout the night but nothing monumental. Our two biggest complaints were that the chairs were dirty ( we didn't use chair covered at a $2+ per cover). I would have assumed the chairs would have been a little more presentable or at least we could have been warned of their appearance and then could have decided to still forego the covers if we wanted. and 2. at the end of the night, we needed to be out of the ballroom (with EVERYTHING cleaned up) by midnight. Not an issue... unless they don't let you turn the lights up in room due to the owner having dinner in the other room and him not liking the lights being on in the ballroom??? A little difficult to clean up an entire ballroom after a wedding with dim lights. There were a few other things that didn't go as smoothly as Id liked but that can happen anywhere. We received SEVERAL compliments on the food (we had a buffet) and on the beer (Oktoberfest and Budlight- HA). Overall, it was a great venue for us and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun environment at a moderate cost.
My reception was in the Kellersall Ballroom. I loved the wood, stained glass, the character! The staff was amazing! Very attentive. Drinks and food were SO good. We had some of their german beers on draft, served their mixed wurst dish, saurkraut, a steak, their famous pretzels and hot mustard sauce, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots. Delicious!! They have LOTS of options to choose from for receptions. Much better than your boring chicken breast, green beans, and a white roll you get at most weddings! Josh was an amazing coordinator. I loved the setup with the dancefloor in the center. The total cost includes room rental fee, food, drinks, linens, lighting, and our cheesecake for 215 guests. Not bad if you have shopped around!
I LOVED our wedding at the Rathskeller. It turned out to be a perfect choice and I couldn't recommend it enough! It allowed us to have a downtown elegant wedding without completely busting our budget. I loved the flexibility the Rathskeller allowed and the fact that they didn't seem to nickel and dime us on every little thing. We loved working with Josh and the fact that he was a straight shooter. Because it is a restaurant, the food was delicious, warm, and ready on time! Everything was handled so professionally and I'm so glad we chose the Rathskeller. We did a cost analysis of some of the top downtown venues and this was by far the best bang for the buck. I was worried that might be reflected on our wedding day, but I almost cried when we came into the reception - it was perfect! I couldn't have been happier with our choice of reception location!
SO Delicious!!!!
The Rathskeller exceeded our expectations - the building is beautiful and served as an idyllic backdrop for our photos, the atmosphere was warm, inviting, and vintage, and the food was excellent. We did everything there, from the ceremony to the cocktail hour to the reception, and the staff took care of everything. They were also friendly and responsive the whole evening. Would recommend for sure!
We absolutely loved this venue! The Athenaeum building itself where the restaurant is housed is gorgeous! Its a beautiful place to take pictures! We got married in September in the Upper Ballroom. We had our ceremony and reception in the room, and everything was wonderful. The room itself was very affordable and housed our 120 guests comfortably with a large dance floor. The transition from the ceremony to reception hall took place in minutes while guests were getting food! Everything was so organized and well planned, which was due mostly in part to the awesome event coordinators that help you every step of the way. Josh is amazing, and I think I emailed him almost everyday during the planning process. He always responded promptly and kindly :-) Our entire day and the planning process was perfect! If anything went wrong, we never knew about it!
The catering by the Rathskellar was also amazing! We had a full premium bar and multiple appetizers since our reception didn't start until 8pm. Everything was delicious, and there was plenty of it. The bartenders were super friendly and fast!
The other thing we loved about this venue was the proximity to everything in downtown Indianapolis. We took most of our wedding pictures before the ceremony and were able to walk to a lot of places for photos. We are both from Indianapolis so this meant a lot to us to have such a variety of Indy's history included in our photos. Also, for out of town guests, there are a ton of close affordable hotels in walking distance or a short cab ride.
We absolutely made the right decision in this vendor!
I know a lot of people who had their reception at the Rathskeller, but I don't know anybody who had their reception in the Athenaeum Theatre. It was such a cool, unique venue (everybody loved it), and we still had all the delicious food from the Rathskeller. People went on and on about how delicious our food, beer, and cheesecake was (we had cheesecake in lieu of wedding cake). We also heard many comments about how cool our introductions were, in that we utilized the stage for introducing the bridal party, and the curtain was pulled up to introduce the bride and groom! Josh was our event planner and was very organized, and made me feel like he had everything under control. HOWEVER, the event planner we had the day of our reception (Kathy) was very rude to all of our other vendors (the DJ, lighting guy, videographer, photo booth, photographer)- I was told this later, as she was very nice to my husband and I. There was also a ceremony going on in the ballroom below us at the same time that our reception was fully underway, and we had to STOP the music for 10-15 mins because the bass was thumping during their ceremony. Understandable that the other bride and groom wanted it quiet, but VERY unfortunate that it came at the expense of our party. It was an awkward period, but after that everything was great. We hired the lighting guy - Bernie - to man the spotlight and lighting and such, and he was AWESOME. He went over and beyond to make our day exactly what we wanted - including getting there early in the day to open a room for me to put my dress on. Compared to other venues in the city, the Rathskeller is a great value, and we are so happy we had our reception there.
Very affordable! They cook the food since they're a functioning restaurant. We had so many guests tell us it was the best wedding food they ever had! Coordinators were easy to contact and great to work with. We didn't have an major blips in our special day at all! A great location too being in downtown Indy. I would definitely recommend them to any future bride.
I had my reception at the Rathskeller, and they also catered. The food was incredible! We had a very large menu to choose from, and we got to come in and sample for free. We had so many compliments at the reception on how wonderful the food was. Also very well priced, especially compared to the other venues in Indy! I definitely recommend it!
We had a fantastic experience at The Rathskeller. We had a rehearsal dinner for roughly 70 people and had plenty of space. We were even upgraded to a different room free of charge. The food was as great as was the service! The A/V equipment allowed us to play our own playlist during dinner and be heard during our speeches. I would highly recommend this venue for a rehearsal dinner.
The staff was very professional, attentive, helpful, and friendly. The room looked gorgeous, and the coordinator kept everything according to schedule. I would recommend this venue to any bride!
The staff was great, and everything was on time as scheduled. Joshua was able to help with planning the wedding and answer all my questions.
Excellent venue, great communication, wonderful food, perfect room! Cannot speak highly enough - we used them for our rehearsal dinner and it went so smoothly and the food was amazing! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!
This was a very nice and easy rehersal dinner. We got our own private room with our own servers. We got to order off the menu (although we were able to create an abbreviated menu). They took the time to match everything to our wedding colors. Very reasonably priced.
We had our wedding reception at Rathskeller and they did above and beyond than what we asked for.
Josh Vouguh, the planner there is amazing. He worked with us every single details down to a week before wedding. We recommended anyone who is getting married at Indy to have it at Rathskeller. The food are great. We asked for 2 special dish from our cook book and they perfected the recipe till we said yes.
