I was very excited to book The Sam for our wedding. The food reviews were great and our goal was to provide amazing food during our wedding.
I first reached out to Michelle in the fall of 2021 inquiring for a summer 2023 date. I was told that they could not confirm availability more than 12 months prior to the wedding. Once me and my fiancé settled on a winter 2023 date, I reached out again in December of 2021. This time it was around 12 months prior so I was able to book our date.
We were planning a small wedding of 65 -75 guests. While the planning was relatively smooth, I felt like I was being judged for not having a full-time planner. I was planning the wedding myself and I hired a day-of coordinator, so I was doing most of the communication with Michelle prior to the wedding day. Every time one of our payments was due, I had to remind her that she could go ahead and charge our payment method. Finally, it came down to our menu tasting. The food was wonderful and the custom menu was exactly what we wanted. However, the day of the tasting, after Michelle left the table, a staff member was making conversation with my fiancé and I and said that the couple getting married the day after us (we had a Friday wedding) had a “$50,000 wedding”, they had money, and they were buying rooms for all their guests. And because they were spending so much money on their food and beverage, that he would be able to give us some extra perks. I was shocked and frankly insulted. I guess he assumed we didn’t have money, or at least not as much as the other couple and felt comfortable talking this way with us. That was very unprofessional considering all the thought we were putting into our big day and we still spent a considerable amount. I decided to let it go at the time.
The wedding day came and when I checked in for our honeymoon suite we were given a room on the 5th floor. I thought that was strange because I had the impression we would be on the 2nd adjacent to the reception room.
Nothing was delivered to our room, even though the package said we would get a special wedding amenity. I reached out to Michelle after the wedding. Some of our guests had cancelled and we were trying to work out a credit back (we did get some back, which I appreciate). I brought up what the staff member had said at the tasting and that we didn’t get the actual honeymoon suite or the amenity. She was apologetic about the staff member comments but had no interest in finding out who it was. She also denied the other wedding was $50,000. She did confirm that the couple getting married the day after us got the honeymoon suite on the second floor because they had booked the wedding six month prior to us booking it. That was surprising considering I was told we could not book prior to 12 months. That means the other couple booked a full 18 months prior. So, moral of the story is The Sam Houston will be a good choice for you if you are wealthy, white and are planning a 150+ wedding. They will give you preferential treatment over a smaller wedding and different racial background (I am part Hispanic). I am guessing the other couple did get their wedding amenity and I hope they enjoyed it.
The wedding itself was wonderful and the food was delicious. However, having been so plainly discriminated against has cast a shadow on what we think about The Sam and Michelle.
We didn't originally want a hotel as our wedding venue, but once we saw The Sam and met with Michelle Scrimger, we were sold! The hotel has a boutique feel, and the Veranda event space is unique and beautiful. Michelle was fantastic to work with, and answered so many questions we had. Coordination with our on-site vendors was seamless, and their food and beverage options were top-notch. They worked with us to tweak a couple of things on the food and drink menus, and the day of ran extremely smoothly. Our package included the honeymoon suite adjacent to the Veranda event space, and it was perfect. We highly recommend The Sam Houston Hotel for a unique "hotel" wedding space.
I had my wedding here in November 2019 and I have nothing but amazing things to say about this hotel. First off, Michelle (the wedding coordinator) is a SUPER STAR! She is the sweetest and will bend over backwards to help you out. If you want an easy, stress free (well, as stress free as this process gets ;) ) reception planning process, BOOK HERE. She will make your life so much easier when it comes to the venue, food, etc. Additionally- the head chef and food were amazing, we had rave reviews from our guests! And the open bar was very well used :) The event space itself is very charming and held our very lively ~120 guests perfectly. I can’t think of anything that didn’t go perfectly here. 10/10 recommend!!
I had my wedding at the Sam and overall thought it was lovely. Mitchelle the on-site coordinator was great but whoever was her replacement while she was on vacation was clueless. The food was super good and they let us customize our menu which was fun. The biggest issues were 1: There was not enough valet during the wedding and the cops decided to come to route traffic which made traffic worse 2: We ran out of the Lobster Ravioli before all tables were served 3: Checking in and out the hotel was difficult / the hotel staff struggled with remembering we had a room block 4: Our package came with a Jr. Suite but the staff seem not to know this detail even though it was in our contract which we pulled up. Our room had been given away but they put us in another room which the staff forgot was complimentary and tried to charge us for it the next day. Mitchelle is the best part of booking the Sam and once we informed her about our issues, was very apologetic and helpful. It was a beautiful venue but the staff needs a bit of work/better training.
We got married at the Sam Houston Hotel on New Year’s Eve (12/31/2018), which was a blast! This was the first venue we toured and we knew instantly it would be the one. The first person we met was the Catering Manager, Michelle and she is truly AMAZING! Michelle was so detailed and responded to emails and calls right away. She was there every step of the way and even the day of the wedding. My family loves to have fun and she fit right in. Since the 31st was on a Monday we threw a little Sunday Funday in the Hotel Bar - The Pearl, to welcome all the out of town guests. They let us have the entire bar, our own bartenders (who were fantastic), and a select menu from the hotel that the guests could order from. The food was PERFECT! There was something for everyone including the kids but my favorite was this fancy ham and cheese sandwich, I think I ate two of them! For the day of, we did the ceremony in the Veranda then cocktail hour / small bites downstairs while they flipped the room for the reception. I have never seen a group of people work so hard, they got the room done so fast and it was SO beautiful. The Veranda is beautiful as is but when we walked in for the reception, I can’t even describe how amazing it looked. The wedding food was delicious, the chef went above and beyond to make sure every detail was perfect. We had a seated dinner with 186 people, so you know the chef and the rest of the staff worked so hard to make sure it was flawless. The next morning, we did a small brunch for the wedding guests in the Pearl Bar. The food was much needed and delicious! I know the chef had to be worn out but he did not disappoint with the breakfast tacos! It was the perfect send off for our guests who stayed up late and rang in the New Year with us. Between the staff (seriously the best), the beautiful venue, the delicious food…and drinks, we couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. The hotel truly went above and beyond for our wedding!
We really enjoyed having the Sam as our reception venue. I am still getting compliments on how cool and unique of a wedding venue it was! I like how it gave an outdoor feel but was inside so we didn't have to worry about the weather.
BOOK THIS HOTEL FOR YOUR WEDDING!! Not only is the Veranda absolutely gorgeous, but the staff is amazing to work with. From the moment we visited the venue for an initial look to the morning after our wedding, they treated us like we were the most important people in the world. I felt so comfortable and worry-free during the entire process. They were responsive and worked with all of our requests. I could not have been happier with how everything turned out. Oh and the food!! The chef was wonderful to work with and all of our guests raved about the authentic taco bar we had! I could not recommend this venue more.
We picked the Sam Houston hotel after seeing a few very distinct pictures of the Veranda in wedding magazines. It was even better in person. It is the perfect mix of blank canvas and unique features. I fell in love with the greenery wall with the clear beaded curtain immediately! The brick wall was also a perfect complement. Once we sat down to discuss the details, I liked how flexible they were in everything – the menu, décor, and timing. The fact that they only do one wedding per night sealed the deal for us. We booked it 14 months out! The original catering manager we met with ended up leaving a month after we signed the contract, but luckily, Christopher (the new manager) was so accommodating and personable that the transition didn’t affect anything for us. I also liked that there was no specific charge for the room, it was a food and beverage minimum. We knew we wanted to wine and dine our guests so that was perfect for us. Once we started picking food and liquor packages, we set up a time to try the food and pick our signature drink. The bar manager was super helpful and didn’t stop trying to make the precise drink we wanted until my fiancée said Perfect! We also wanted a signature entrée and Christopher and the entire culinary had several meetings just to execute it seamlessly for all of our guests and people are STILL talking about it! I cannot say enough about how much Christopher worked with us, tirelessly and constantly to make sure everything was how we wanted it. Anything we would suggest, he would assist us in figuring out the best way to do it. He was priceless in making the reception flawless, stress free and stunning. Another perk is the ease with which our guests were able to make reservations to stay at the hotel the night of. The venue is perfect for having a small wedding (150 guests) without feeling crowded or empty like most hotel “banquet” rooms tend to. I couldn’t have helped so many guests without Miriam! She would answer my emails not only same day, but usually same hour. Having so many closes family and friends being able to spend the night with us made the after party (in the SAM bar) a blast. The venue is so incredible, I wouldn’t have wanted my wedding anywhere else.
When we first booked the Sam Houston Hotel, the Catering Manager that we booked with quit and the Catering Director at the time was not very helpful and honestly she was unpleasant to work with; I considered cancelling our contract. However, then came Christopher P. the new catering manager and made our wedding the most beautiful experience we could have dreamed of. He constantly reassured myself and my wedding coordinator that everything would be alright, additionally, he met with must multiple times for my wedding staff to see the venue, the rooms for prep work, tastings, etc very easy. Anything I wanted, Christopher made it happen without stressing me out. We went up to the venue several times during the 15 months prior to our wedding and every single person at the Sam was AMAZING. From the valets to the bartenders to the front desk. We even picked our own bartenders and the staff stayed to watch our Mariachi perform. Janice S was also AMAZING; She and another bartender Chris created our signature drink "Fleur de Cartiz" for our New Orleans meets Old Mexico theme and needless to say it knocked everyone's socks off.
We truly felt like family to the staff at the Sam...we completely and whole-heartedly recommend this vendor to all of the future couples out there that are looking for a boutique hotel feel, where everyone knows your name and your are the star priority.

My reception turned out better than I could have imagined. I cannot comment on the lobby for the appetizers as we didn't join in, but the feedback was good from guests. I had 100 guests for a seated dinner, everyone fit nicely. We had steak, some people had to have them re-cooked (too pink for them), but it was not an issue with the staff. Everyone that worked the night of was great! Our suite they provided worked out amazing with it right on the same floor. I dealt with Natalie at first, she was very nice, and then Kristal, who was also very friendly. They were responsive and I could tell they cared. We were very pleased with how things turned out and I recommend it.
We had a guest room block here and I stayed here the weekend of my wedding. The amenities are very nice, however, the service is awful. The night before my wedding, I called down for an extra blanket and never received it. The morning of my wedding it took three calls to the front desk and asking twice in person to get extra towels. Additionally, I don't think they gave out any of the guest bags that were at the front desk.
I am so glad we chose The Sam Houston Hotel for our ceremony and reception. The space is absolutely breathtaking and it was so convenient to have all of the guests staying in the hotel- no transportation required. The food was a little bit disappointing- it came out cold. The wait staff wasn't very good either. My husband was serving everyone at the head table until I finally found a waiter to assist. As far as communication with the Sam Houston Staff they were very helpful, but not as detail-oriented as we would have liked. For example, I asked one of the coordinators if I could use candles in my decor at the reception and she said yes. Come to find out the candles had to be enclosed in some vessel. It makes sense to me- I just wish they would have been more detailed with their responses. Overall though- they were very accommodating and I would have booked with them again in a heart beat.
I recently got married at The Sam and used them as my ceremony and reception location, both in the veranda. The entire event was beautiful and pretty flawless.
From day one, Natalie and her team made me feel like I made the right choice. She was friendly, professional and made me feel like I wouldn't have to worry about a thing and I didn't!
The day of went off without an issue. They coordinated with all the vendors to make sure I didn't have to worry about delivery times etc. The ceremony was beautiful and the reception was even better. The food was amazing and she made sure me and my husband were treated like royalty. I would recommend them to anyone and everyone.
Natalie and her team are amazing and provide excellent customer service! They are professional, responsive, and make the wedding planning process easy. We received tons of compliments on our decor and this beautiful venue! I would recommend the Sam to any bride-to-be!
We had our wedding here on January 4, 2014. We couldn't have asked for a better or more beautiful ceremony and reception! Natalie and Brandon were a joy to work with. They worked so hard to make sure we had the perfect wedding - and we did! The staff during the reception were extremely attentive to my husband and I throughout the night, which we really appreciated! We got so many compliments from our guests about how beautiful everything was and how amazing the food was! Everyone loved it! Overall, I love this hotel and the staff. The rooms are beautiful. The lobby is beautiful. Everything about this hotel is gorgeous. I wouldn't have changed anything about my wedding!
The Sam Houston Hotel Veranda was absolutely amazing! We were married 2 weeks ago and had our reception at the hotel. The staff was wonderful, Natalie and Brandon were so helpful and prompt with emails. They were flexible adding extras to the menu, changing our counts, rearranging the room and offering extra services. The food was delicious and the service unmatched. All of our guests commented on how well they were treated throughout our wedding weekend. I cannot say enough about our experience, the entire wedding process was a delight. Thank you to Natalie and all of the staff who helped make our wedding reception all we dreamed it would be!
Natalie and her staff were amazing!!! Everything came off without a hitch. People are still calling with compliments on the hotel and the whole event. The food was fantastic, the service was impeccable. Everyone was so patient and forgiving. You will LOVE having your event at this hotel!!
When my husband and I walked in the Sam Houston Hotel, we knew that we wanted our wedding at this venue. Starting with the reception area, very chic and then the Veranda, kinda indoor/outdoor concept, totally different than other venues. We met with Natalie Monk, who is very professional. She was very helpful with all our questions and responded promptly to all our emails. Even the day of the wedding she was taking care of all the details, and that made me feel stress free. The service was fabulous, they even assigned somebody to our service for every need during the wedding (thank you!). My guests were amazed by the food (delicious!!), the venue and enjoyed the cocktail hour at the reception (great time to greet the guests and relax after the ceremony). I would definitely recommend this venue, they exceeded my expectations.
We recently had our reception on Sept 7,th 2013 at The Sam Houston!!!! We are eternally grateful to Natalie and the staff for going above and beyond on our wedding weekend. We arrived Friday and form Friday until Sunday the staff was on point with all of our needs. Having Natalie in charge served better then hireing a Wedding planner. She knows her stuff!!!! I will be going back for furture parties: )
You can't go wrong with them!

Just had our wedding there on June 23! The staff was amazing and the waited on us hand and foot!!! Couldn't ask for a better experience!
We just got married, and it was nearly perfect! Choosing the Sam Houston Hotel was one of the best decisions that we made. Natalie and Cali were so great to work with, they responded quickly to my emails and made me feel like all my concerns were addressed. They helped make my wedding run so smoothly and look so beautiful!
We would recommend anyone use the Sam Houston Hotel. The staff was the best part, we did not have to look far for assistance and were brought everything we needed. We felt like the VIP guests!
Thank you!!!

We had our wedding on May 24, 2013. From the first time we saw pictures of The Sam Houston Hotel online we both fell in love. I absolutely loved the Veranda. Working with Natalie was wonderful- she was very helpful and answered any questions/concerns that we had along the way. The only problem we had was that the day of the wedding when the groom and groomsmen tried to check into their room to get dressed it wasn't ready. The guys had to wait thirty minutes for their room, which then put us behind schedule with our photographer! Overall our wedding turned out perfect, better than I could have ever imagined!
My daughter got married almost two weeks ago. We had the ceremony and the reception at the Alden. It was perfect! The venue itself is very unique. The food was absolutely delicious. I have received many compliments on the venue and also the food. Everything went very smoothly. I worked with Natalie who is the coordinator at the hotel. She was amazing during the entire process. She was always very responsive to my emails. She was very organized, helpful, and made the whole process stress free. She is a huge asset to the Alden. The rest of the Alden staff were also very attentive and made sure we were taken care of. No complaints at all. I can't say enough about the Alden and Natalie. I would highly recommend .
The Alden turned out to be amazing! Had a minor hiccup at first when we previewed there was no sweetheart table, but they fixed it with no problem and hassle. The cocktail hour was amazing we had a speciality drink available and they did an awesome job of making sure there was enough and the staff was very nice.
Food came out to be fantastic! The plates looked like it was from a speciality restaurant and not rushed like most weddings have.
The best part is the whole venue it doesn't feel or look like a ballroom and you barely even have to decorate. I am very happy to of had my wedding there and would recommend them to everyone!
My husband and I were married at the Alden Hotel in downtown Houston. I wanted an outside garden wedding and my husband wanted more of a modern style wedding. When we walked in the Alden we knew it was perfect for the both of us! It is a stunning an intimate setting. The feel of an outside wedding without the threat of any weather challenges any bride could foresee. The service, rooms, and food were all remark arable and noticed by all our guests. I cannot thank Natalie and the staff of the Alden enough for giving us such an unforgettable event!
The Alden was amazing. It was the perfect setting, we had about 150 people and it filled the place up. I wouldn't use them if you have more than that because it will be to cramped. However, for us it was just right. The food was to die for, and the hotel staff was great. My husbands grandfather uses a scooter to get around, when he was checking in the front desk upgraded him to a suite for no extra charge so he could get around easier. It was nice things like that which made a difference. Everyone was pleased with the service.
My wedding at the Alden was a huge success. I can't lie and say that everything was perfect the entire way through, however in the end I was very happy with the outcome. The main reason I had frustrations during the wedding planning process was because I had to deal with 3 different coordinators. I ended up with Natalie M. She was very responsive when it came to answering my emails and getting me answers to any questions that arose. She worked with me when prices changed from when I originally signed my contract because I was on a limited budget. The week before my wedding they let me drop off personal decor items and Natalie made sure they were set up on the day of my wedding. Overall the wedding day went smoothly except for my groom and the groomsmen not getting their boutonnieres in time for their pictures although that may be my florist fault. I also noticed that the event staff was setting my reception tables up wrong and had to tell them. Other than those couple things the event flowed perfectly! Guests were very impressed with the food (braised short ribs and garlic mashed potatoes). After the wedding was over and we went back to our room I wasn't too happy that maids hadn't come to clean our room while we were gone. Although there were chocolate covered strawberries, champagne, and a nice note waiting for us.
All in all I would recommend the Alden if you're looking for a unique spot with the indoor/outdoor feeling.
The Alden Hotel proved to be the perfect venue for my daughter and son-in-law. The site is beautiful-the indoor/outdoor feel is so unique. Its the beauty without the heat and humidity of Houstpn. Natalie, the coordinator was there for our every need and the staff was very attentive to both our overnight guests and the ones attending the reception. The food was delicious-all 3 entrees were cooked well. The evening flowed and Natalie responded to my requests both before and during the event. "the best wedding ever" was the phrase my daughter used to describe the nght.
Alden was just the perfect setting for my wedding. Natalie was so on the ball leading up to the day of and throughout the entire planning process. Even though we didn't hire a coordinator, Natalie made it so easy for us: she oversaw the entire day of set up, arranged a suite for us for the weekend, coordinated all of my vendors including the band, she personally brought gifts to my room to make sure that they all got there, had food and drinks in our suite at the end of the evening, and she kept us on the timeline the whole night. I could go on and on- she was so patient and helpful & made the day so stress free for me!
Aside from that, the menu that we selected was perfect-our guests couldn't stop raving about the short ribs! The hotel is very beautiful and would make a wonderful backdrop for any event. I shot my bridal portraits there for no charge and my pictures turned out gorgeous. All in all the whole weekend was a HUGE success due to a talented staff! I would recommend the Veranda to any bride.
I would recommend any bride to the Alden. I wanted to do as much included as possible in my venue and also keeping with a more modern and contemporary look. If that is what you're looking for-go with The Alden. They provided AMAZING food, drinks, linens, basic decorations, and excellent customer service. Their coordinator Natalie responds back to all email and phone calls quickly and she made the whole process easy for me. It was nice for me to enjoy my day and not have to stress about all the little things. I also liked to that they didn't try to "nickel and dime you" for every little thing. Services like cutting the cakes-we didn't have to pay for each slice. Their basic decorations and set-up already look sleek and modern, but you can bring more decorations if you like. For any extra decorations I wanted to put up or have set out, I just dropped them off a few days before the wedding and Natalie made sure everything was like I wanted it. I just added a few more paper lanterns and the centerpieces and everyone talked about how great everything looked. It's also nice that the venue photos well. Our pictures turned out great. We took a few inside the reception area, in the lobby, and also outside.
Everyone who assisted our wedding completely fell in love with the venue. It is completely different from any traditional ballroom, and this is what I love some much about it. It is a very chic and intimate venue. Many of my guest commented on how they loved that they felt a part of the wedding and not just another chair in a huge room. The service was amazing; Natalie and her team were constantly making sure we were taken care of. The food was delicious, from the hor d’oeuvres to the main entrees!!! And I truly mean AMAZING!!! I recommend this for anyone looking different.
This was an amazing place to have my wedding. The light fixture above the bar was beautiful. The staff was very helpful and very nice.
If you are looking for a modern patio style venue in downtown Houston - this is a nice place. Nice area that can be decorated beautifully. I wasn't impressed with the view of the bails bond place right next door. The patio chairs need an overhaul!
We LOVED having our wedding reception at the Alden. Beautiful, beautiful space that you can decorate as much or as little as you want to. Fun location in downtown. Our guests had a fabulous time. Catherine Bradley is AMAZING and thanks to her we had a very smooth reception. We had about 150 guests.
The staff at the Alden are excellent. The service was incredible. The entire staff was attentive to every detail to ensure a memorable event.
The Alden Hotel was great. The staff was wonderful. Absolutely no complaints.
I love the fact that it is a Veranda;when it used to be the Sam Houston Hotel, the food came out wrong, and they made so many mistakes with the bill, I still have lawyer looking at it
Since the majority of our guests were from out of state we wanted the reception to be at a hotel to allow for overnight accommodations and extended party after the reception ended. We wanted it to be close to the ceremony site and onsite catering would also be a plus. But most importantly we did not want the traditional hotel ballroom feel but something unique and with character. We decided on the Alden-Houston hotel a luxury boutique five-star hotel located in the heart of downtown Houston only 12 blocks from St. John's Church. Excerpts taken from websites: The Alden-Houston originally opened in 1924 under the name Sam Houston Hotel. After being shuttered for decades it was part of the Houston's downtown revitalization project in the 1990s it was brought back to life and restored to its original glory providing luxury accommodations in a swanky historic setting. The $14 million completed transformation of this historical landmark conveys sophistication graced by warm southern hospitality-'New York meets Texas'. Reborn as a stylish contemporary destination delivering the highest level of outstanding personalized service. The sophisticated and stylish hotel combines its classic architecture with cutting-edge contemporary design. The exterior is simple — brown brick with old-fashioned canvas awnings. Walk around to the side of the 10-story building and you'll see a nod to its past — a fading original advertisement of it's previous name. The interior is ultra-modern and retains much of the original building's charm. The lobby blends Texas cowhide fabrics with pinstripes. Colors were inspired by original 1920s tiles found on the lobby floor. The walls behind the Wenge wood reception desk are clad in tooled leather and the border around the carpet was designed to look like a Western belt. Light sconces are shaped like obelisks to echo the historic San Jacinto monument. A skylight in the lobby is a reproduction of the one that was there in 1924. The reception was catered offering an enticing variety of new American cuisine by the hotel's award-winning restaurant *17 named after the number of railroads that on the eve of the Civil War met here making Houston the hub for the Texas railroad system. See MENU HIGHLIGHTS below. The Reception was held in the hotel's second floor Veranda a unique indoor/outdoor space which used to be an outdoor terrace that has been customized with an architectural tent structure that is climate controlled and includes overhead stylish fans and adjustable lighting. It has exposed historic brick on two sides on the third side greenery wound around horizontal wooden slats uplift by blue light radiating through a floor border of rocks and a brushed aluminum bar and finally the fourth side was open to the spring night air overlooking the historic Houston courthouse and views of downtown. The Veranda provided the best combination of the past and present and a memorable setting for my cocktail hour seated dinner and reception.
