After a venue cancellation issue due to construction, the Whittemore House came to our rescue with 3 months to go before our wedding. The venue is an awesome place to explore, photograph, and enjoy with any event, and the WH team was great to work with. They have a beautiful garden and receptions rooms. Would highly recommend!!
We absolutely loved our Whittemore House wedding. I was so grateful for the beautiful indoor space when rain was predicted for our whole wedding weekend. The catering staff was excellent- we made various changes to the menu over the planning period and had to have some meals brought in for guests with certain dietary restrictions, and the team was flexible and accommodating about everything. We had about 170 guests for a seated ceremony, cocktail hour throughout the house, seated dinner and dancing. If we had had more guests the dancing would have been too crowded with all the dinner tables, so I would recommend staying under that number if there will be a dance floor. We used a DJ which was great but I don't think the space would have accommodated a band with a lot of guests on the dance floor. Lyn and Carder did an excellent job keeping the schedule moving, keeping track of our decorations and favors, and generally making me feel at ease about the day. Walter was wonderful and a huge help in setting up on the wedding day. We loved that many guests could take Metro and/or stay in the many hotels close by. Getting married here was a wonderful experience!
While we loved the venue in terms of beauty and location, we had a really hard time working with the company that manages their events. I want to specifically say that Walter, the house manager, is wonderful. We only met him the day of the event and unfortunately were not put in touch earlier. The events team was unresponsive, and we dealt with many errors in our contracts - they never charged a deposit when we originally provided our signed contract and CC auth form, we were told the ballroom can fit 220 and thankfully we only had 150 because no way more would fit with a dancefloor. We were promised a champagne welcome that never happened and we had even printed this in our schedule for our guests. We weren't given linen or floorplan options until 10 days out from the event despite requesting several times in our 14 month planning period. To start, when we first viewed the venue and fell in love we put a soft hold on a date. When I called the preferred caterer to discuss, he told me they already had a wedding on that date at that location. We had to go back and change our date with the venue. We were planning from across the country and tried to schedule a venue walk-through when we were in town with plenty of notice, but we were cancelled on the week of our travel. Our planner rescheduled with my mom to visit the venue, now without us because we had to fly back west, and the venue cancelled 15 MINUTES before the scheduled walk through leaving our planner and caterer to have to walk through without them. I was beyond frustrated that our plans felt so shaky and without our planner I would have been a wreck. This is a beautiful venue and the bartenders/security they contract with are GREAT, but if you decide to book here (and I don't discourage it) just make sure you follow up with the team/have a planner and are super diligent about getting everything in writing so you don't end up with any surprises. It just felt like they really didn’t care about our wedding and since the venue basically sold itself there was no need to make any effort in customer service.
We had an incredible experience at the Whittemore House at our wedding in September. We chose to hire Allison as our day-of coordinator which I would highly recommend - she kept us on schedule and pretty much coordinated the day of perfectly. She also dealt with questions from several sources and connected with the vendors to make sure they knew when to arrive, etc. The venue is beautiful and the staff was very accommodating with last minute changes due to the hurricane. They set up our decorations and arch better than we could have and we loved the space as guests could walk around inside or mingle outside if they wanted a break. We had an amazing time and would highly recommend the Whittemore House!
The Women’s National Democratic Club is an amazing venue. Everyone tells you when you get married that something will go wrong at your wedding – but that didn’t happen to us. Walter and the other staff at the venue made sure everything went perfectly. They were responsive, set up everything and managed the event so that we could focus on the big day. The bartender and wait staff were also amazing with our guests and made sure everyone had a fun time. From making sure the ceremony was perfect to managing the big moments like the cake cutting – the staff was friendly, professional and handled everything from start to finish. They were also extremely helpful during the wedding planning process, recommended vendors and helped us make key decisions. We are so glad we went with them. I don’t think you will receive the same attention at any other venue in the city.
The Whittemore house was perfect for our June wedding. The house is spacious and very DC. Our 120 person wedding felt both fancy and homey at the same time. We worked mostly with Allison, who was incredible in every way. We also hired her for our day-of coordination, and if anything went wrong, we didn't know about it! We used the ballroom for our ceremony, then had the cocktail hour in the upstairs and downstairs rooms, followed by dinner and dancing back in the ballroom. We used an outside caterer, but the bar/wine service was provided by Whittemore. I cannot speak highly enough of the Italian wines we chose - all produced by female vintners! I would recommend the Whittemore House (and Allison) to any bride.
My husband and I have both lived in DC for almost 10 years, and we wanted our guests to experience all the history, beauty, and excitement the city has to offer. We were also mindful of budget for our 130-person wedding. I'm so glad we discovered Whittemore House. We immediately fell in love with the beautiful space and the staff. Allison and Eduardo provided incredible service from start to finish--no detail was left unnoticed, and the whole day went off without a hitch! The space is incredible, the staff is phenomenal. As a bonus, the space is also the home of the Women's National Democratic Club--I'm now a member and look forward to going back for future events! You can't go wrong with Whittemore House--it was the perfect venue with loads of charm and elegance!
Whittemore House was the perfect wedding venue: it is stunning, spacious, historic, centrally located with tons of hotels and DC sightseeing around, has indoor and outdoor space, professional, experienced, flexible for all types of event visions (you can use their catering, which is great, or bring in your own!) and - most importantly - has Eduardo. Eduardo is one of the easiest people to work with and one of the most professional. I was blown away at how easily he was able to accommodate our requests, and how effortless he made it all look. And he does it all with a smile and thoughtful touches that made me feel like the venue had been personalized for me. We received so many comments on how perfect the venue was - elegant, yet relaxed and cozy. I would recommend this venue to anyone.
My husband and I used The Whittemore House for our 150 guest wedding reception. My overall comment is that the space was beautiful, and the site manager Eduardo was a dream to work with on the wedding day. We used the upstairs of the house for our cocktail hour, and the ballroom for the dinner and dancing. Guests loved being able to mingle in the period-decorated rooms. 150 guests was a great amount -- any more than that and I would recommend breaking down tables for the dance floor.
My only qualm was that, at times, the wedding coordinator for the site (Lyn) was unresponsive to emails, at times, going up to two weeks without answering them. She is lovely in person and a professional wedding coordinator herself, but this was frustrating. Also, at our final walk through, she sent her assistant in her place who gave us several points of misinformation, and on one occasion, she became defensive when I pressed to clarify an issue about linens. Several emails with Lyn after the final walk through brought clarification to these points.
All that said, the Whittemore House was the perfect site for our downtown DC wedding. It's affordable compared to other downtown venues, and the day-of staff was awesome.
The Whittemore House was an amazing venue.
Not only was it beautiful and perfect for our ceremony and reception, the staff made our wedding an amazing affair.
They were so professional, lovely to me and my guests, and made the entire day seamless. I am so happy I chose this venue, because I never had to handle anything, it was taken care of.
I also thought the cost was very reasonable (includes staff, security, bar and bartenders).
Everyone is still telling me how much they loved our venue.
I am so glad we chose the Whittemore House to get married. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING was perfect. The staff was amazing, and Lyn Stout- is a genius. If you are looking for a unique place to get married-check out this place! They provide all tables, chairs, flatware, linens etc... and the bar and bar tenders. We also used them for lighting. it was stunning
We got married at the Whittemore House last month (Sept 20th) and I couldn't have imagined a more spectacular place to get married. We held both the ceremony and reception here and had about 165 people in attendance. The space was perfect and felt very 'DC' - plus, we were able to get a ton of pictures in the circle.
Lyn was absolutely amazing to work with - her and the staff at the Whittemore were very accommodating and so easy to work with.
Compared to some of the other venues in DC, the Whittemore House was an amazing value.
The Whittemore House was perfect for our black tie wedding reception! Our wedding ceremony was at the Cathedral of St Matthews and then guests either took cabs or walked down the street to the Whittemore House, which is located next to the Dupont Circle Hotel, which was where our wedding hotel block was located. It was all very convenient. The Whittemore House is extremely classy and although it’s a historic building, everything has been restored and looks wonderful and fresh. Guests are able to walk upstairs during cocktail hour and enjoy the very historic and ornate rooms. One of the rooms is where Eleanor Roosevelt gave her radio addresses back in the day. We didn’t decorate very much, with the exception of flowers and few photographs of us and our parents at their weddings. I could not have imagined a better venue for our reception. I truly had a dream come true wedding and reception! Lyn, Brad, and Miguel are the coordinators and are fantastic to work with. I would very highly recommend this venue!
I'm a native Washingtonian and a lover of all things politics and presidential. This beautiful, unique, historic and lavish mansion sits just off the iconic Dupont Circle. It also doubles as The Women's National Democratic Club. The walls are lined with first ladies, heads of state, presidents and beautiful art. If you rent the entire mansion, you and your guests can use the entire mansion, for the duration of the event. The bride's dressing and powder room are beautiful and there's another wing where the men can relax while the ladies get ready. The ballroom is beautiful, the front room looks like a room from a palace, especially in pictures and you can't beat the value. It's like a one stop shop. When you book there, you get the flatware, the tables, lines, glasses, liquor, drinks, etc. All can be upgraded for an added fee of course. You can also have the mansion staff order and bring in specialty liquor or champagne, again for the price of the items you want. The best part about having your wedding at The Whittemore House is the woman you deal with when you decide to book it. Lyn Stout. I can't say enough about her. I loved her attention to detail, class, experience and work ethic so much, I hired her as my day-of-coordinator. Best decision of my life. She handled everything from coming to get every piece (there was car loads full)of wedding accesories, paper products, favors, containers, flutes, gifts for the wedding party, you name it, Lyn toted them with her. I didn't have to lift a finger. She made everything smooth as silk. She was super responsive and we traded hundreds of emails back and forth 1.5 years before the big day. She is a God send and worth every, single penny!
I discovered the Whittemore House when we were looking for a unique and affordable wedding venue in the city. Our expectations were that we wanted something beautiful and classic, but wouldn't cost us an arm and a leg. We're really happy we discovered the Whittemore House because it was a perfect venue for our ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. We had about 90 people, and a whole mansion to ourselves. All the cool art, architecture, and historical pieces really made our wedding even more special that we were part of something larger. The staff there were also very professional, and were very flexible with set-up and requests we had. I don't think there is anything they didn't address well. I made several visits to the venue when I wanted to check on something and they always welcomed me.
We held our wedding reception at the Whittemore in Sept '12. It was a great location - all the out of town guests loved staying in Dupont with all that it has to offer, and Whittemore is right in the middle of that! We had guests stay at the Dupont Circle Hotel, right next door, so it was super-convenient for them.
It's a beautiful, historic mansion with tons of history and detail that are easy to get sucked into. All the woodwork, ceiling detail, and antiques throughout the home are beautiful and add to a sense of elegance the home has.
The staff are fabulous - they made everything go seamlessly and we had easy access to the space in advance of the wedding, which helped us a lot. Lyn, the point person for weddings, is very relaxed and easy going. Burak and Brad were also super-professional and a pleasure to work with. It is also one of the best value sites we looked at.
It was the perfect site for us, and if I had to do this all over again (hopefully not!) I would pick Whittemore again!
The food was included and was wonderful! The flow of the wedding was great. It's a great private club/historic mansion and fit all of our guests.;The staff can be disorganized and this did cause a couple of screw ups during our wedding. But they corrected them. You just have to be really on top of them and monitor everything the staff is doing. We did not work with a wedding coordinator but this might have been a useful place to have one.
