When you hire someone for something as important and special as your wedding - and pay them a large chunk of your savings - you expect a certain level of professionalism and appreciation. We received neither from the Yellow Carrot.
Pros:
- They can handle catering, cakes, bar, flowers/decor, and rentals - super helpful to have one contact for all of those details
- The food really is incredible and unique
- Delicious cakes and nice presentation
- Beautiful flowers and decor
Cons:
- Disorganized, you REALLY have to stay on top of Sari to make sure she gets the details right (when I say "details," I mean bringing enough seating for your number of guests, etc)
- She is very busy and makes you feel like she doesn't have time for you
- My bridesmaid's bouquets were much smaller than expected (especially for the price), and one groomsman's boutonniere was forgotten entirely.
- A special allergy meal for a little girl (that was pre ordered and paid for) was cross contaminated and inedible
- An order of GF/DF cupcakes (again, paid for) were never put out (we found them in the venue's refrigerator the next day) and Sari ignored my request for a refund
- Dinner service was cut short due to Sari having to leave early, with TONS of food left over - no idea where it all ended up
- Cake cutting utensils weren't provided as promised - we just used a serrated knife
- Instead of serving our guests champagne when they arrived to the ceremony as planned, the staff mixed our champagne with their basil lemonade - our friends called it "toxic waste green champagne" - very odd
- After Sari left (early), the staff essentially stopped working. We only had our venue rented for the day, so it was agreed that the staff would clean up that night, leaving only their tables and chairs to pick up the next morning. NONE of that cleanup took place - they instead stood around for the rest of the reception and left when we did. Thankfully they returned to clean the next morning, and it was OK with our venue, but Sari later sent me an email saying I owed an additional $800 for the staff's time the day after the wedding.
- When I asked Sari to call me to discuss the above issues (and really not feeling like I should pay an extra $800), she instead had her employee call me for my credit card info. So, I sent Sari an email explaining my reservations, and again received a canned response from her staff. It's obvious that there was no discussion to be had. I just had to suck it up and pay, and will absolutely never work with Sari again.
One of the best decisions we made was hiring Sari and the yellow carrot to catering our wedding. This included a full meal, open bar, wedding cake, as well as flowers and decor. All aspects that the yellow carrot handled were flawless. One thing that really impressed us was her setup of the meal. I have attached pictures to this review and the way she serves and setups the meals are truly incredible. We stopped in for a consult with Sari prior to hiring her and decided to have breakfast at her restaurant and tasted her food and the rest was history, we instantly knew that she would be the one to cater our wedding. So many people commented on how good the food was and how beautiful our cake was we couldn't have been more pleased.
On a personal note Sari is a kind warm person. Her energy and creativity made us even more excited for our big day. Her passion for her work was truly an inspiration. WE LOVE SARI AND THE YELLOW CARROT!!!!
Although Sari is really nice, everything that was promised to me for my wedding they did not come through on. The flowers I wanted were not delivered on, I asked for petals for the flower girl and they forgot them. The food was cold and some of it was inedible, the bartender had never bartended before. He even asked my sister what was in a gin and tonic.! They destroyed the keg by shaking it all the way down the stairs and then over pumping it. They didn’t have ingredients necessary for signature drinks, didn’t have basic bar tools. Servers didn’t clear off our table nor were they around for the first third of service I had to go ask for them to start serving wine. They told my husband they couldn’t serve both red and white at the same time. Also they didn’t know the difference between champagne glasses and wine glasses and were pouring wine in champagne glasses. Honestly I could go on but everything that they did was a disaster and they charge way too much for that to happen. I got about 20% back when I spoke with sari after the fact but honestly is should have been more because everything they did was terrible and basically ruined my wedding. After they opened their restaurant in town they just can’t run the catering business. It is really disappointing because when I booked them the restaurant was not open and the catering reviews were the best of all the caterers in the area. Do not book!!
My daughter attended a wedding this weekend and ended up in the ER. She is highly allergic to nuts and peanuts. I know no one can guarantee cross contamination but the amount of allergen in her body was food related after examination. Three different times servers were quizzed about the food contents and each assured her that there were no nuts.
After a three hour stay in the Er and over one thousand dollars later, I would not recommend this company's professionalism. It is the responsibility of the catering company to inform customers intelligently.
Sari and her team were amazing! Doing the tasting and meeting with Sari were our favorite parts of the wedding planning experience. She made it fun and easy. Both our rehearsal dinner and wedding turned out beautiful thanks to her and her team.
This establishment has poor customer service and is over priced.
The yellow carrot catered a family members wedding and could not have been better to work with, as well as providing great food and service. The groom and brides families were both handling a lot of the prep and organizing of the venue themselves, a venue which was a private residence that had never hosted a wedding before, yellow carrot stepped in and helped with everything not just the food. The were able to roll with the punches offer alternate solutions and coordinate some of the other vendors who were not so accommodating to the hiccups that happened leading to the ceremony. Also the food was great unique dishes and presentation, great fresh salad served family style, roasted chicken, chimichuri steaks, Mac and cheese, fresh fries doughnuts, lots of great passed appetizers during the cocktail hour. All in all I could not provide a higher recommendation.
The Yellow Carrot was absolutely amazing; they provided not only our food but the floral & decor, tables, chairs, menus, utensils, desserts, drink mixers and servers + bartender for our event. My husband and I love good food and it was important to us that our wedding reception have the very best -- and we truly did. I would recommend the Yellow Carrot for any sort of event within the Telluride / Durgango, CO area.
I had heard really good things about this caterer before my husband and I went for our "tasting". I called to schedule a menu tasting and they said if we didn't commit to use them before our tasting it would be $50/person I think they said (whatever the amount it was outrageous for a tasting). Since we lived 4 hours away and had heard good things about them we went ahead and committed to use them before our "tasting". When we went in to "taste"/set the menu for our wedding everything was great. The food that we chose, my husband and I, including both of our families thought it was delicious. We paid extra for them to deliver the food hot the day of our wedding and to set everything up in disposable containers. Thank goodness we didn't pay for them to actually serve our food because the morning of my wedding they called the wedding coordinator at my venue and told her they couldn't deliver the food. We paid EXTRA for them to deliver the food and they literally called the morning of and said they couldn't. I had a meeting face to face with them 5 days before my wedding and confirmed the menu and the fact that they would deliver the food hot and set it up for a buffet style dinner. Thank goodness the event coordinator had an extra staff member she sent to pick up our food. BUT not all of the food was hot, the side dishes were wrong, the salad was wrong and we nearly ran out. The head chef ASSURED me that she had a reputation for providing more than enough food. Lies... the final count that we gave them accounted for 10 extra people just in case some stragglers showed up. We also had about 12 people that rsvp'd, that we accounted for that didn't show up and we literally had a few pieces of chicken left at the end of the night. I had heard some "stories" about other weddings running out of food, or the food not being as good as the tasting etc. Well the stories were true. I would NOT recommend this caterer.
The yellow carrot was the only bakery even willing to entertain doing cakes with NO egg. All other bakeries told me I was crazy. So, for that, I give them props. Their service and help through the planning process was exceptional. They definitely are professionals when it comes to that. We did a two tiered cake, cup cakes and a fruit dipping bar. The carrot cake was out of this world although it was really hard to cut through the fondant and made for a funny at our cake cutting. Not a big deal. We loved what they did for us.
I had many long distant phone calls with the owner and sent photographs of cakes that I liked. I even met with her the day before the wedding to assure myself that we would get the cake we wanted. The cake looked like an apprentice baker had designed it. Very unhappy as it was fairly expensive.
Hire the right people- The Yellow Carrot are the right people! TYC did our rehearsal dinner desserts, our reception dinner, our decor, our flowers, and our bar tending.
Dessert at our rehearsal dinner... We had TYC make up some cookies and cupcakes for us and they were so yummy! The cupcakes were gorgeous and not a single one was left. The cookies were also a huge hit, especially the red velvet cookies. Very yummy desserts- I suspect their wedding cakes are equally impressive.
Dinner... and hors d'oeuvres... were Amazing! We had passed hors d'oeuvres and a plated dinner. Everyone raved about the food and the presentation. Everything was pleasing to both the eyes and tastebuds. My only complaint was that I couldn't finish my meal (who came up with these bustier and girdle things!?) The food was fantastic!!!
I showed Sari (the yellow carrot mastermind) some pictures of tables I had seen that I liked and she pretty much ran with it. They did all of the set up and everything was better than I could've imagined.
The flowers... I sent some photos I had found of boutonnieres and flowers on tables that I liked to Sari. We discussed things and decided to go as local as possible and maybe throw in some white roses. Well mother nature threw us a curve ball with a hot, dry summer that destroyed Durango's chances for having any local flowers available. So, I told Sari to do what she needed to and to make it pretty, and she did. I pretty much let her pick out all of my flowers for me! That's what I mean by hiring the right people. Do that, and get out of their way, they know what they are doing! Anyway, all of the flowers were gorgeous and didn't break the budget at all!
Our bartender was great! We ended up going an hour longer than planned and I really appreciate that the staff didn't gripe at all, they were such pleasant workers! Matt and I really appreciate all of their hard work!
Overall, The Yellow Carrot is unbelievably good at what they do, and they do a lot! If you hire them for any of their services, know that you made an excellent choice and that they will go above and beyond to make everything unforgettable.
Sari was absolutely fantastic. She worked within our budget and her presentation was beautiful!! The cake and the mexican buffet were to die for! We planned this wedding from overseas, and didn't even get a chance to taste the food before the big day...we got rave reviews, and nothing but compliments on the yummy food. She was a joy to work with, and super-accommodating.
Sari from the Yellow Carrot is willing to work with any budget. We did a custom made "Mexican" buffet (with nothing cheesy about it) and our guests wanted to try everything! Her cookie buffet was awesome! One groomsman even stole a cookie label so he could remember them. She even gave us a great deal on a giant cake for our rehearsal dinner. And to top it all off, many of our guests admired her presentation. Very professional in all ways.
