We are not a religious couple, but our families are, so when it came to picking someone to marry us, we were pretty much stumped. Usually, you can go to your place of worship, even if you aren't that involved, and have your priest/rabbi/pastor.../whatever marry you. The only other option I knew about was to get a justice of the peace.
We wanted our families to enjoy the ceremony (as well as approve!) just as much as we did. Then we found out that because of our personal situation (living together, different religious family backgrounds, non-practicing) there are a lot of people who could marry us outside of a church membership, but wouldn't due to conflicting beliefs.
Next comes a long search through the internet of who we could get at the last minute (4 months to go!). We emailed a few people, but ultimately came to the decision to meet up with Rev. Hardison. We knew from the moment we started talking that we had made the right call--and it only got better! The ceremony he wrote for us included all the little bits of our story that we had talked about at our first meeting. He asked us to email him a little blurb with more details, and custom made our ceremony.
Everyone was asking how long we had known him because it felt like he was an old family friend. That is how much care and consideration goes into each of his events. There was no doubt that we hadn't gotten our message of love and devotion out there, without having to overload it with scripture and religion that we didn't partake in. The religious notes that were included highlighted enough of our families' traditions that it didn't feel sterile and secular.
