Vi-An Nguyen is a Brooklyn-based designer and art director interested in the intersection of art, editorial, and storytelling. She currently works as an Art Director for Penguin Random House, where she creates playful graphics for book covers and other publishing-related products. Vi-An also shares her graphic design talents with others as a freelancer. She started her career in journalism, writing for Texas Monthly, Chicago Home + Garden, The Knot, and Parade Magazine.
Before landing a full-time position, Vi-An completed internships with USA WEEKEND Magazine, Gawker Media Co., SELF Magazine, and Texas Monthly. She then worked as a Freelance Editorial and Art Assistant for Chicago Home + Garden. From 2011 to 2012, Vi-An worked as an Editorial Assistant for The Knot. She wrote content for The Knot’s biannual regional magazines and wrote and designed graphics for website posts. After this position, Vi-An worked for Parade Magazine as an Associate Editor. In 2014 she started offering graphic design services as a freelancer, and she continues this today. She also moved into a Designer position with Penguin Random House in 2014. Since then she has been promoted to Senior Designer, Assistant Art Director, and now serves as an Art Director.
Vi-An graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism, with a magazine concentration, and Psychology. She has also taken graphic design and typography courses through the School of Visual Arts’ continuing education program.
