Why Katy Perry's Engagement Ring From Orlando Bloom Is One-of-a-Kind and Rare
Katy Perry's engagement ring is positively blooming. The "Firework" singer and actor Orlando Bloom, who got engaged in 2019 on Valentine's Day, have since welcomed their baby girl Daisy (whose name just so happens to reflect Perry's engagement ring). Bloom opted for a nontraditional ruby and diamond engagement ring that reflects Perry's sweet, bubbly and eccentric personality. The sparkler features a pink diamond or ruby center stone surrounded by a colorless diamond halo of eight smaller stones so that the engagement ring is fashioned after a daisy.
"Katy Perry's engagement ring fuses modern design with an iconic vintage-inspired silhouette that's been part of jewelry history since the 1700s," says Jennifer Gandia of Greenwich St. Jewelers. "Organic motifs such as daisies and clovers were very popular during the Victorian era. Several public figures and celebrities have reclaimed this style in modern times. Most notably Lady Diana, whose sapphire and diamond engagement ring is now worn by Kate Middleton. Similar styles have also been worn by Princess Eugenie, Penelope Cruz, Eva Longoria, and Lady Gaga."
How Much Is Katy Perry's Engagement Ring Worth?
Like most celebrity engagement rings, Katy Perry's sparkler is truly unique and with that special flair, it's accompanied by quite the hefty price tag. The center gemstone is either a ruby or a vivid pink diamond (experts have weighed in on this), and dainty cut diamonds encircle it for a floral halo effect.
"The ring appears to be made with a high-quality yellow gold (either 18K or 22K) and features a halo of eight natural white diamonds surrounding an oval ruby. We imagine this ruby to be one of the highest quality [stones], possibly even the most sought-after hue of pigeon blood, which is recognized by its vibrant red color with a purple hint," explains Gandia. "Rubies are not for everyone. They're often chosen by bold, passionate and artistic people who embrace color in their everyday lives. A ruby's fiery red color is believed to represent passion and confidence, qualities that are definitely associated with Katy Perry. She's someone who's brave enough to wear red and express herself in daring ways. This ring is a total match for her vibe."
If Perry's center stone is a ruby, the piece is valued between $25,000 to $50,000. If it's an actual pink diamond, the total value of the ring would be bumped up significantly with an estimated value between $500,000 to $2 million, says the experts at Brilliant Earth. "Rubies are exceptionally rare precious gemstones. High-quality rubies are considerably harder to find than diamonds, especially in larger sizes," Gandia adds. "When determining a ruby's rarity, it all comes down to color. The rarest have a vibrant red hue, hints of purple, and the right balance of darkness and light within the stone. Rubies are also a 'nine' on the Moh's hardness scale - only one step behind diamonds. This makes them a durable choice for those seeking a diamond alternative for their engagement ring, but don't want to sacrifice integrity."
According to Andrew Brown, the president of WP Diamonds (via E! News), this rare ring could even be valued up to $5 million. Experts note the oval-shaped center stone is believed to be four carats in size, while each of the eight individual colorless diamonds weighs approximately one carat each. Everything is set on a yellow gold band.
How Orlando Bloom Proposed
Bloom popped the question over dinner on Valentine's Day. The couple posted a selfie of themselves huddled up beneath a sea of red heart-shaped balloons with Perry's ring front and center. "Full bloom," Perry wrote.
The pop star first met the Lord of the Rings actor at a Golden Globes afterparty in New York City in January 2016. They subsequently kicked off a whirlwind relationship that briefly went on hold in 2017. By 2018, they were once again reconciled and in a fully exclusive relationship, with a proposal to follow the following year.
Perry has long remained private about her romance with Bloom, who shares a son, Flynn, with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr. In a 2018 interview with Vogue Australia, she stated: "Of course, I love my relationship, but that is one part of me, and I don't want any part of what I do to be diminished." Perry was previously married to comedian Russell Brand, though their relationship fell apart while she was on tour.
Shop Katy Perry's Engagement Ring Style
Unsurprisingly, the Grammy winner's engagement bling is somewhat similar in style to what several royals are wearing. In some ways, Perry's ring resembles Kate Middleton's 12-carat Ceylon sapphire engagement ring from Prince William (also Princess Diana's ring from Prince Charles). It also looks similar in style to Princess Eugenie's 20-carat Cartier engagement ring, featuring a Padparadscha Sapphire with a white diamond halo. Any ring with a colored center stone and white diamonds would fit the bill in this case.
"This vintage-inspired floral design is great for all the romantics out there who love whimsical old-world charm mixed with modern craftsmanship. It guarantees your ring won't look like everyone else's, and that's definitely a plus for someone who's spontaneous with a singular sense of style - just like Katy," says Gandia. "We also admire how this design choice could be connected to Katy's affinity for flowers. It's known that she has a virtual flower business, and her daughter's name is Daisy. We're seeing more and more couples get creative with their engagement ring choice, opting for designs that speak to their personality or serve as a visual reminder of something they cherish each time they look down at it. This appears to have happened with Katy's ring."
Personalization opportunities include a birthstone choice or a favorite color, even a sculptural design element, says the expert at Greenwich St. Jewelers. "There are many ways to make such an important purchase special and unique to your love story," Gandia notes. "Adding mixed diamond shapes into the halo… makes the vibe more playful and unexpected."
