What We Know About Leighton Meester and Adam Brody's Romance
Leighton Meester and Adam Brody have done their best to keep their personal lives out of the limelight, despite extreme interest from the public. The Gossip Girl alum and breakout star of The O.C. have now been married for more than seven years and share two children together. Not much is known about the Hollywood couple, however, outside of their impressive resumes. (Meester played Blair Waldorf and Brody portrayed Seth Cohen on their respective hit TV series.)
That is intentional though. "We're homebodies," Brody told GQ in 2019. "We don't go to a lot of things that perhaps we could and don't seek out promotion in that way. We've found this great balance so far that really works for us. We're also not very active on social media." Still, it's worth noting that the celebrity couple's real-life romance—or what we know of it, anyway—bears a sweet resemblance to the most well-scripted rom-com, complete with a meet-cute, a whirlwind courtship, and the kind of ongoing romance and partnership that anyone would be lucky to have.

All About Leighton Meester's Wedding to Adam Brody
For two high-profile actors who've amassed legions of loyal fans, Leighton Meester and Adam Brody are surprisingly low-key. They've walked the red carpet together and even co-starred in two films (2011's The Oranges and 2014's Life Partners). Outside of work-related outings, they like to keep their personal lives under the radar. This level of privacy extended to their secret wedding, held in early 2014. Here's what we know about their nuptials.
The secret wedding took place in California.
Since so little is known about Meester and Brody's wedding, fans have pieced together facts from various reports to even confirm where the ceremony was held. On Feb. 18, 2014, Us Weekly confirmed that the couple had married; one day later, E! News reported a small but important detail. "Leighton and Adam got married in Northern California by the ocean a couple of weeks ago," a source told the outlet. "It was a very small and intimate wedding with close family and friends. It was beautiful."
The first time Brody confirmed the wedding was to paparazzi.
Later that month, the paparazzi asked Brody whether he and Meester had gotten married. In a video that was later released, a photographer can be heard asking The O.C. alum, "Hey man, is it true you really got married?" The actor replies "yeah," then he thanks the group for their congratulations. He throws a thumbs up when another paparazzi member asks, "How's the wife?"
They don't mind if you see their relationship as an extension of their teen dramas.
In a 2019 interview with GQ, Brody was asked whether he found it strange that fans likened their relationship and marriage to a romance between their on-screen characters, Blair Waldorf and Seth Cohen. "It's not bizarre," he said. "To be perfectly honest, it was a little embarrassing [at first]. I guess love knows no bounds?" During a joint interview in 2017, Meester echoed her husband's sentiments, telling Entertainment Tonight that they joke about the connection "occasionally."
"Once a year, randomly, on our Seth and Blair day," she said. "It's good for a laugh. It doesn't excite us, I think, because we're just human beings ... but it's exciting to us that it's exciting to you. It's cool."
The Couple's Relationship Timeline
For two celebs who are usually tight-lipped about their relationship, both Cohen and Meester have said some very sweet things about each other over the years. The pair, who now share two young children together, are each other's biggest fans, best friends, and, yes, heroes.
When did they meet?
According to Brody, the pair actually met years before he and Meester were co-stars in their 2011 film, The Oranges. In a March 2021, he explained to Anna Faris on her Unqualified podcast that producer Josh Schwartz was the one who had initially introduced them. "Josh Schwartz produced both [of our] shows and literally the first time we met, that whole [Gossip Girl] cast was eating at Canter's—and I lived at Canter's for my entire 20s," he said. "And I was leaving, and he introduced all of us."
While it's unclear who made the first move or what the pair did on their first date together, Brody did tell Faris that he was blown away by Meester's surprisingly kind nature. "I had no idea whether she was a good person or not. And, in fact, kind of assumed she probably wasn't for the first handful of years that I didn't know her, just because, I don't know, Gossip Girl," he said. "Come to find out, she's literally like Joan of Arc. She is the strongest, best person I know. She is my moral compass and North Star, and I just can't say enough good things about her character. It's crazy."
How long did they date?
The pair reunited on the set of their 2011 indie film The Oranges, but they didn't start dating right away. Both were dating other people at the time. (Meester was seeing Aaron Himelstein, and Brody was dating Lorene Scafaria. Prior to that, he was linked to his costar Rachel Bilson.) Brody admitted to Faris that he was "very attracted to [Meester] from [the] jump. She's a heavenly creature. I thought she was gorgeous."
However, the pair didn't ultimately start dating until a year after the movie when they were both single. Then, the romance was a whirlwind with both stepping out together for the first time in 2013. Both were engaged before the end of the year.
When did they get engaged?
In November, People confirmed that the couple was engaged. Though neither star confirmed nor denied their engagement, they were spotted smooching in South Africa about one month later. Eagle-eyed fans spotted Meester's engagement ring in blips. Though public details are scant, the ring looks to be a bezel-set 4-carat cushion-cut diamond in a rose gold setting.
When did they get married?
The happy couple got married in a secret ceremony in early 2014 (the exact date has never been confirmed), at a venue in Northern California. What's been reported is the wedding was a very intimate affair with just close family and friends—no word on whether stars like Meester's Gossip Girl costar Blake Lively or any of Brody's The O.C. buds were in attendance. A source did, however, confirm to People that Meester was "very happy" about the secret wedding. "She has a lovely ring. She likes [it] a lot," the source said, calling the event an "under-wraps wedding" that was "super intimate."
After the Wedding
Following their 2014 nuptials, Meester and Brody stepped out as a married couple for the first time at the 68th annual Tony Awards in support of Meester's role in Broadway's Of Mice and Men. It would take two more years for the couple to step out on the red carpet again, at The London Hotel in Los Angeles for the premiere of Brody's new series StartUp, though plenty happened in between.
Immediately following their early 2014 nuptials, the pair jetted off to the St. Regis Punta Mita Resort in Mexico, but sources later denied that the trip was a formal honeymoon. "She was in Mexico shooting," the source said. "Adam was with her, but it wasn't their honeymoon. It was strictly a professional trip." Since then, not much is known about their honeymoon choice.
Both Meester and Brody have given subtle nods to the preciousness of their home life and their love for one another over the years. In a 2018 interview for Porter Edit, she opened up about their relationship, "I'm happy where I am now," she reflected. "And I think that that's one of the many wonderful parts of not only having a child and meeting your soulmate, but also I feel really lucky career-wise—really in a place that I want to be."
Then, one year later, she gushed about Brody again, this time to The Hollywood Reporter, praising him for his cameo as Derek on her show, Single Parents. "I mean, yeah, it's a wonderful, great, lovely thing," she said of working alongside her husband. "I mean, he's my best friend, and I wanna work with him on everything, and I think he's, um, the best in everything."
Meester and Brody are parents to two children. They welcomed their first child, Arlo Day, on Aug. 4, 2015, and in September 2020, Brody revealed via Twitch that the pair had already welcomed their second child. "I have a new kid," he reportedly said. "I have a boy, and he's a dream. He's a dream boy."
During the pandemic, the family has been staying busy nesting at home. "Go Fish was big for a while," Brody told The Wall Street Journal in December 2020. "We've stepped it up to Monopoly Junior. A little piano, a little karaoke, and a lot of walks through the neighborhood."
