Dreams can be a mirror of our deepest desires and some people believe they foreshadow what the future holds for them. Having a dream about getting engaged can create curiosity about what it means and whether you'll be walking down the aisle sometime soon.

Dreams can hold clues to your beliefs, feelings and values, so they're sometimes worth looking into. However, it can be a little challenging to decode your dreams on your own and easier to do with the help of a dream analyst or expert. Lauri Loewenberg, a professional dream analyst in Tampa, Florida, explains what dreaming about a proposal could mean for you. Pam Muller, a dream expert in Atlanta, Georgia also offers her expert insights on what this dream could mean.

In this article:

What Does it Mean if You Dream About Getting Engaged?

A dream about getting engaged could be literal and mean you'll become a married person sometime soon. That can be encouraging if getting married is one of your life goals and you've been unsure about whether it will materialize any time soon. "If you are currently hoping your paramour will be popping the question soon, then this dream would be considered a manifestation dream where it is putting you in a real-life scenario in order to prepare you for it or encourage you to keep striving for it," Loewenberg says.

That said, dreams can be figurative versus literal in some scenarios. Muller explains that dreams can be metaphors for what is happening or going to happen in your life. That means a dream about a marriage proposal may have nothing to do with love or marriage. "The most important component is the emotions you feel in the dream," Muller says. "Emotions are more important than symbols when it comes to making meaning from your dreams. The emotions you feel in the dream are connected to something in waking life that makes you also feel that way. But the characters are symbolic, so love and intimacy in dreams might be symbolic of all types of affection and closeness in waking life."

Dreaming about getting engaged could also signify that you're about to make a deeper commitment in another area of your life. "If engagement is not on your bingo card or you're already married and this sort of dream seems to be coming out of the blue, then it would likely be connected to a real-life situation you are considering committing to or engaging in such [as] starting up a business, going for a degree or making a lifestyle change," Loewenberg says.

After having a dream about a proposal, it can be a good task to journal about any recent commitments you've been contemplating or real-life desires you've been considering. Pay attention to your inner thoughts, deepest desires and what your intuition is nudging you about.

Common Dreams About Proposals

Dreams about getting engaged (and even dreams about your wedding) can come in different shapes and forms. This means some may be straightforward, while others may seem bizarre or outlandish. Here are a few types of dreams about proposals someone could experience.

Getting Engaged to a Celebrity

"Getting proposed to by a celebrity is the most common engagement dream reported to me over my 28 years of being a professional dream analyst," Loewenberg says. While the likelihood may be low, the dream meaning may be hidden in the thoughts, feelings or emotions you have about the celebrity in question. Do you admire their success? Are you inspired by how philanthropic they are? What are some of the things that you admire or despise about the celebrity in question?

"As with any celebrity you may dream about, your subconscious chose that particular celebrity for a reason. It is not random. There is something about the celebrity that is relevant to you and your life right now. You just have to follow the thread," Loewenberg says.

Being Proposed to With a Strange Object

Another potential engagement dream one could have is about getting proposed to with a strange object versus a ring. Loewenberg says one of her clients dreamt about getting proposed to with a television remote control. In that scenario, the dream could signify needing to commit to some type of change. Think about what significance the object in the dream may have and how it applies to the current season of your life.

You Dreamed About a Proposal, Now What?

Now that we've explored the many potential meanings of an engagement dream, what should happen next? Should you get down on one knee to propose or start sending your partner hints about your dream engagement ring? You don't necessarily need to act on the dream, but Muller says it can be a good conversation starter if you are currently in a romantic relationship. "Mostly, it means you feel strong, confident and hopeful about the future of the relationship. It could suggest that you're ready to take the lead in the relationship," Muller says.

If you aren't in a relationship, the next step may be to take a closer look at what season you're experiencing in your life. Think about whether it's time to pivot, commit to something new or make some major changes in your life. "Remember, dreams are messages from you, to you, about you... in order to improve you," Loewenberg says.
