There are countless things to do after getting engaged—set a date, find a planner, shop for the dress!—but our advice is to pause, take a moment and enjoy. Instead of wedding planning right away, start with engagement party planning; there are so many cool engagement party venues in Boston to jump-start your celebrations.

First, consider your guest count and the part of town where you want to host your event. Phoebe Allen, creative director and senior event manager for Boston planning firm AE Events, says she often sees larger engagement parties for smaller weddings. "Where we see engagement parties thrive is when the wedding is more intimate, and the couple wants to celebrate with more guests," she says. "We have had couples wait a year to start planning, and we have had couples wait two days after the engagement to start planning!"

To kick-start the process for you, we've rounded up a dozen unique places for an engagement party, from romantic Boston restaurants to notable wedding venues in Boston to spaces rife with New England history. Sift through our list, then check out even more Boston engagement party venues on The Knot Vendor Marketplace.

Rochambeau in Back Bay

Without going too heavy on an engagement party theme, Rochambeau has a chic Parisian feel that makes it ideal for sophisticated events. It offers a variety of spaces for your event: Check out The Patio for summer parties or the stunning Bordeaux Room for cocktail parties up to 120; we also love the semi-private Rosé Table as an intimate and pretty bridal brunch location in Boston. The best part? The food is top-tier, featuring a French brasserie-inspired menu.

1780 House in Concord

If art, architecture, history and community are your vibe, add 1780 House to your list of Boston engagement party locations to explore. Technically just outside Boston in Concord, Massachusetts, this historic venue was once home to Henry David Thoreau and is now an art gallery and event space with vintage appeal. Its open gallery space can host 48 guests or 30 for a seated dinner (and with a state-of-the-art catering kitchen, meals can be as gourmet as you'd like).

Prima in Charlestown

If stellar engagement party food is high on the priority list, look for restaurants that offer private dining spaces or full buyouts for larger events. Allen recommends Prima, an old-school Italian steakhouse in the Charlestown neighborhood. "Prima has an amazing private dining room and already has a beautiful romantic atmosphere," she says. (You can go lighter on engagement party decor because of it!).

Hampshire House in Beacon Hill

For a classic, upscale engagement party in Boston, Hampshire House gives a little bit of history and a whole lot of elegance. Originally erected in 1911, the historic mansion overlooks the Boston Public Garden and is rife with old-world detailing like wood-paneled walls, marble fireplaces and unique molding. With three floors of event space, there are flexible floor plans for up to 100 guests seated or 200 guests reception-style.

SoWa Power Station in South End

SoWa Power Station is another piece of Boston history: It was built in 1891 to power the West End Street Railway and, at the time, was the world's largest power plant. Now, it's a stunningly reinvented architectural event space for weddings, corporate gatherings and more. "SoWa is a giant venue space, but what people might not know is there is a second-floor mezzanine that is the perfect buyout space for 120 guests," Allen says. It's one of her top engagement party places in Boston.

Terra at Eataly Boston in Back Bay

The popular Italian marketplace probably isn't your first thought for an event venue, but its third-floor space, Terra at Eataly Boston, offers a beautiful oasis for engagement parties. The space is centered around an open kitchen and wood-burning grill and is filled with flora and botanicals for a greenhouse-in-the-sky feel. Plus, with its own in-house food service and some of the best Italian delicacies available, you know the cuisine will be excellent.

Summer Shack in Back Bay

For a laid-back party that's undeniably Boston, check out Summer Shack, which specializes in New England-style seafood: Think steamed lobster, over-the-top raw bars and oysters on the half shell (have them shucked on-site for an experiential moment). The restaurant can host events of anywhere from 20 to 400 guests and even has its own event planning team to help bring your casual engagement party vision to life.

Folio at the Boston Athenaeum in Beacon Hill

This Boston engagement party location can be your something old and your something new. Recently opened by The Catered Affair inside of the historic 1807-founded Boston Athenaeum, Folio is a European-inspired restaurant and private event space. "This pretty new space is right in the city," Allen says. "It has a lot of different spaces to do dinner or a reception." The farm-to-table cuisine can be customized for your event, and an engagement party here could provide the perfect foreshadowing to an Athenaeum wedding.

View Boston in the Prudential Center

Especially if you have guests traveling in from out of town, it's fun to show off the city where you fell in love. Nowhere does that better than View Boston, a tourist attraction by day but a beautiful event space by night that offers 360-degree views of the city. There are multiple event spaces to choose from (or combine for larger events), including one of the coolest Boston rooftop engagement party venues, the Stratus Bar on the 51st floor. The rooftop bar can house 50 guests inside, but when opened up to the outdoors, it can host events of up to 200 guests.

Democracy Brewing in Downtown Crossing

Beer lovers, this one's for you. Democracy Brewing is a fun engagement party venue in Boston that can highlight your shared passion as a couple. Offer flights of the brewery's house beers—plus noshable bites like spicy fried cauliflower and spätzle mac 'n' cheese—to guests in the private dining room, which hosts up to 75 standing or 50 seated guests. For smaller affairs, book out the semi-private lounge space and let the party go late into the night.

The Substation in Roslindale

Erected as one of the original engineering houses for Boston's trolley system, The Substation is now a coworking and community gathering space and one of the most unique engagement party venues in Boston. There are two unique spaces: The grand main level, with soaring 34-foot ceilings and 3,000 square feet to play with; and the cozy lower level, with soft seating and space for 50 guests. Pro tip: Reach out to book early, as the venue hosts its own events—from open mic nights to wellness events to circus acts—and the schedule books up far in advance.

Joe's Waterfront in North End

Located right on the water overlooking Yacht Haven Marina, Joe's Waterfront is award-winning for its outdoor dining space and stellar views. The restaurant has four private and semi-private event spaces, including the Ocean Room, which hosts up to 175 guests or 130 for a seated dinner. The group dining menus work like a catering service, and parties can add on items like a welcome cocktail or champagne toast. For more informal summertime engagement parties, host 100 people on the outdoor patio.
