7 Wedding Guest Dress Trends to Try in 2025
Wedding guest dressing has become a retail category all its own, with mainstream brands adding wedding shops to their sites and stores: Think Abercrombie, Lulus, Reformation and more. And so, wedding guest dress trends have become something to track, and the experts are doing just that. We spoke with five—including brand reps, stylists and content creators—and naturally, their input varied, but there were some important commonalities. (The one 2025 guest-of trend all of our experts predicted? Drop waists.)
"Generally speaking, wedding guest trends will celebrate understated glamour, with attention to quality fabrics, interesting silhouettes and a reverence for timeless elegance," says NYC-based bridal stylist Jackie Avrumson. And it's no wonder: "Wedding guests add to the beauty of a wedding and play an important role in photos. Not to mention, it's their opportunity to look their [most] glamorous as well."
Top Wedding Guest Dress Trends for 2025
Some in-the-know wedding gurus say weddings are getting dressier; others say they're getting more casual. We admit it can be hard to parse this information into actionable advice. But fashion expert and content creator Katie Sands Bochner hits the nail on the head: Weddings these days actually land right in the middle. "While weddings are becoming less black tie, formal attire in general is on the rise, with guests embracing polished and elevated looks," she says. Avrumson agrees, noting that, really, it's all about sophistication and elegance, no matter the dress code. "In 2025, I believe that wedding guest fashion will lean toward an elegant and sophisticated aesthetic, with a focus on timeless yet contemporary pieces," she says. "Because our brides have worked hard on their weddings, meticulously picking out their own wardrobe to complement their themes, expect an increased emphasis on formality, with many women opting for gowns and chic midi dresses rather than casual attire, reflecting a shift toward more refined and fashion-forward styles." In a word? As a guest, you can skip the ballgown—but you still want to look elevated and sharp.
Though guest-of-dressing has become a form of self-expression, and on-trend wedding guest dresses run the gamut of appropriateness, there are still rules. "One cardinal rule is to respect the dress code," Sands Bochner says. "For example, if the invitation specifies black tie, don't wear a short dress—black tie means a floor-length gown, period. It's all about honoring the couple's vision for their day." Caitlin Bell, a designer and product developer for Petal & Pup—one of our favorite places to buy wedding guest dresses—agrees. "As we see more and more brides throwing traditional rules out the window, there are fewer hard rules; however, everyone is different, so the most important thing is to always check the invite for the dress code and ask the bride if you are not sure." (Hint: If the invite doesn't specify, check the wedding website as well.)

1. Basque & Drop Waists
In their fall 2025 collections, nearly every bridal designer showed at least one gown with a basque waist; for spring 2025, drop waists were everywhere. The statement waistline trend has naturally trickled into wedding 2025 wedding guest dress trends, as well. "Basque and drop waist styles elongate the bodice and sit just below the natural waistline to create a flattering silhouette that highlights the torso and hips," explains Jenn Hyman, founder and CEO of Rent The Runway. "The basque waist adds an extra touch of drama with its signature 'V' shape, offering an ultra-flattering design." Sands Bochner has seen the shift, too. "I'm noticing a resurgence of dresses with a basque waist; it's a timeless silhouette that's making a comeback for both brides and wedding guests," she says. The look is ultra-modern but has a vintage feel—the best of both worlds for fashion girls.
A Bold Red Basque
Though there are some rules when it comes to wearing red to a wedding, it's commonly agreed that the hue is acceptable for Western weddings with a formal dress code. In that case, we're all for it. The color is classic—so give it a modern twist with a basque waist. We love this dress with a statement necklace or stacks of bangles.
Size Range: XS–XL
A Jacquard Drop
For trendsetters, this dress is a major win. It has multiple elements of trending wedding guest dresses, from the drop waist to the subtly shimmery jacquard fabric to the corseted bodice and midi length. It's ideal for a formal dress code and works for indoor or outdoor affairs.
Size Range: XXS–XL
A Garden Party Frock
This pretty pastel ASTR The Label dress leans more casual thanks to its cotton fabrication, but it can be dressed up beautifully for an outdoor spring or summer wedding. Pair it with wedges and statement jewelry—think glittering diamonds or pops of color.
Size Range: XS–XL
Not So Basic Black
Black is always a safe shade for wedding attire, but it can be a little basic on its own. The basque waist trend—created here with full pannier panels on either side of a column skirt—gives this dress a flattering silhouette and a subtle jacquard adds visual interest close-up. Wear metallic statement jewelry to complete the look.
Size Range: XS–XL
2. Playful Prints
"Playful prints add personality to wedding events," Hyman says, adding that she especially loves watercolor patterns and polka dots for guests this year. Bell adds bold florals to the print list. "Have fun with it!" Bell says. "Experiment with prints, patterns and textures. Wedding season has become more playful when it comes to dress codes, so get creative and really let your personal style shine through." The beauty of prints? They require little to no accessorizing. Add simple stud earrings or a statement shoe (in a solid color) to complete these playful looks.
A Polka-Dot Sheath
A formal silhouette with a playful pattern, this dress is the best of both worlds and can be dressed way up or down for any level of attire. It calls for little accessorizing; opt for a pointy black heel and earrings.
Size Range: 0–14
A Neutral Watercolor
Watercolor florals are a fresh trend when it comes to pattern play, but they're typically full of vibrant rainbow hues or pastels. We love the neutral hues in this Aknvas dress, which, with its long sleeves and brown palette, brings florals into fall.
Size Range: 0–12
A Moody Floral
Another way to mix up traditional florals? Opt for darker backgrounds, such as black and navy. Petal & Pup's viral Annabelle dress—check out its chic asymmetric neckline and perfectly draped silhouette—comes in a variety of colors and patterns, with this black floral being our pick for 2025.
Size Range: XS–XL
A Dramatic Design
If an allover pattern isn't for you, you can still have fun with this trend. Look for really oversized prints and florals or one dramatic splash of design, such as the painted tulips blooming from the hem of this one-sleeve statement dress.
Size Range: 14–32
3. Pastel Colors
Both Hyman and Bell pegged pastel colors as one of their current wedding guest dress trends. Look for "gelato-inspired pastels," Hyman says. "Mint green, blush pink, pale lavender and buttery yellow." (She adds that this trend also works for the bride as a chic alternative to white for events like the bridal shower or reception.) Pastels can be rendered in solids or prints (they work exceptionally well for florals!). And, while they're a particular favorite for spring and summer weddings, most pastels can work into fall and even winter as well. Add tall-heeled boots with a pastel midi for fall or a light-toned long overcoat in winter for a monochromatic look.
A Sweet, Sunny Midi
Butter yellow is trending across categories (including bridesmaids), and indeed, it's one of our wedding guest dress trends for 2025. This particular pastel hue works best for spring and summer weddings (even with proper styling, it's all wrong in winter), so lean into the season with strapless silhouettes, cutouts and a midi length.
Size Range: 0–16
A Tulle Dress
Layers of lavender tulle? Say no more. This Zac Posen dress is perfectly light and airy for springtime weddings. Pair it with organic floral accessories like these Lele Sadoughi Paper Lily Earrings (also rentable!).
Size Range: 0–14
An Embroidered Midi
Fanm Mon's Lorr midi dress comes in five perfect pastels, from mint green to pink to peach. We especially love this light lagoon hue, a pretty "something blue" to add to the wedding.
Size Range: XXS–XXL
A Sustainable, Convertible Dress
If ethical design is important to you, check out Reformation's selection of styles made from deadstock fabric, like this pastel sage dress. And it's even more sustainable in the fact that it's actually two dresses in one: Remove the detachable skirt to make it a summer mini.
Size Range: 0–12
4. Texture
We've covered pattern and color, but what about texture? Avrumson is all in on the elevated aesthetic that certain materials and embellishments can add to a look. "For upscale outdoor weddings, we can anticipate a refined display of textures, with ruffles and layered elements taking center stage to make a bold yet elegant statement," she says. When using texture to make a statement, tone down your look in other ways: Opt for simple silhouettes, understated accessories or a solid shoe.
A Long, Layered Dress
This tiered maxi by Lovers and Friends is a stellar choice for formal weddings. The maxi length, heavy tulle fabric and long layered silhouette give it an upscale edge that feels elegant and sophisticated.
Size Range: XXS-XL
A Plisse Fabric
Plisse is a unique material: It's lightweight with a satiny finish but features a pleated texture that adds interest to otherwise simple styles. Here, it elevates a sheath silhouette in a trending russet hue. Accessorize with gold jewelry: molten bangles and miniature hoops.
Size Range: 14–32
A Pleated Column
More proof that texture is in: Abercrombie & Fitch's Giselle pleated styles have become some of the retailer's bestsellers. (There's a cutout maxi, a floral halter and even a jumpsuit in the material). We love the ombre effect added to the texture in this strapless midi sheath.
Size Range: Regular: XXS–XL; Petite: XXS–XL; Tall: XXS–XL
A Textured Midi
Texture is more visible when rendered in lighter fabrics, like this pastel sage from Anthropologie. The style can be dressed down with sandals or flats for a beach wedding; for more formal events, add statement stilettos and bold gold jewelry.
Size Range: XS–L
5. Relaxed Elegance
Hyman is tracking a trend in vintage lingerie-inspired looks. "Boudoir-inspired details make for an elegant yet sultry look," she says. "Look for romantic and intricate lace accents—ranging from all-over lace to delicate touches—corset structures and lace-up backs." Sands Bochner also sees a move toward this laid-back aesthetic. "The focus seems to be on a relaxed elegance that balances style with comfort," she says. But this is a trend you have to be careful with. "I am firmly against wearing anything with cutouts or overly sexy designs," Sands Bochner adds. "When I was younger, I didn't fully understand how inappropriate it could be—especially considering the older guests in attendance—and looking back, I cringe at those choices." Though it's a personal preference (and cutouts can be appropriate in beach wedding guest dresses, for example), the sentiment is important: Make absolutely sure your look is wedding-appropriate.
A Pleated Maxi
To avoid looking too casual in this laid-back trend, opt for elevated jewel tones. Sands Bochner loves this sleek satin style in rich amber; try it with metallic flats and a cool clutch.
Size Range: 00–16
A Pink Slip
The lace detailing on this satin midi is a romantic touch perfect for celebrations of love. Accessorize it with diamonds or rhinestone-studded shoes to elevate the look, and wear it for summer weddings outside.
Size Range: XS–XL
A Shirred Bodice
The shirred bodice, waist ruffle detailing and off-the-shoulder silhouette of this dress give it a provincial look that feels straight out of a fairy tale, and the light textured tulle is a breezy finish. Wear it in spring or summer and dress it up with elevated accessories.
Size Range: XS–XL
A Corseted Gown
Give the bedroom look a black tie spin with a corseted gown in sleek satin, like this one by inclusive designer Christian Siriano for Azazie. The style comes in dozens of colors; it's especially elevated in rich jewel tones like this paprika hue.
Size Range: 0–30
6. A Hint of Shimmer
There are a number of ways to achieve the effortless glamour that Hyman sees as trending, but one of her favorites is with "subtle sparkle for understated elegance," she says. "Shimmering fabrics, beading and metallic touches beautifully catch the light." With this look, opt for a simple shift so that the silhouette doesn't overpower the sparkle. (Shifts are having a moment anyway, according to Avrumson. "Shift dresses are experiencing a notable resurgence this year, offering both comfort and elegance," she says. "They're comfortable, pretty and can suit many different body types.")
A Sequined Shift
Simple silhouette? Check. Shimmer and shine? Check and check. Clear paillettes on this shift—which comes in a handful of hues—give it a glossy finish that's a unique alternative to classic metallic. (Psst, mid-length shifts and sheaths can be difficult to walk in; this one has a slit at the back to make it easier!)
Size Range: 00–16
A Gilded Basque Waist Look
The definition of queenly, this dress has a gilded metallic hue and a Renaissance-inspired basque waist. (Plus, the nylon elastane fabrication is a throwback to the balletcore aesthetic that would have made our guest trends list a couple of years ago!)
Size Range: XS–XL
A Black Tie Metallic
For a black tie wedding, look for rich fabrications like this metallic threaded jacquard. The gown's fitted bodice creates a subtle drop waist (see trend No. 1!) that flares out into a full skirt. It's an ultra-sophisticated look and, as a big-budget item, can and should be reworn for galas and events well beyond the wedding.
Size Range: 0–10
A Strapless Sparkler
For a more obvious sparkle, look for pieces with allover sequins, like this stretch knit strapless sheath. We love the look for a winter wedding; pair it with a chic overcoat for a grand reveal.
Size Range: 14–32
A Lamé Halter
Seventies-era style makes a comeback with this halter dress, rendered in a retro shimmering gold lamé that gets a modern twist—quite literally—at the front. Lean into the vintage look with oversized hoop earrings and platforms, or modernize it with drop earrings and stilettos.
Size Range: 2–14
7. Slip Dresses
There's one trend that's held on from years past. "I predict the slip dress will continue to dominate wedding style," says Corey Robinson, chief product officer for Abercrombie & Fitch. "But we'll be playing with draping, unexpected fabrics and large-scale prints to make them feel fresh for 2025." Avrumson sees the staying power, too. "Silk dresses are set to remain a fan favorite and a staple in wedding guest wardrobe for the foreseeable future," she says. "The sleek silhouette combined with the endless array of colors and prints ensures it will always be an elegant and wedding-appropriate choice. Whether you are looking for simplicity or fun, silk fabrics can always be your go-to." The fabric—whether silk, satin or a combination of the two—adds an opulence that enhances nearly any look.
A Long, Printed Slip
Nobody does silk dresses quite like Reformation; the brand offers a variety of silhouettes, colors, cuts and patterns that offer modern updates to the trend that's proving to be timeless. This one is especially unique, with its paisley print reminiscent of a handkerchief (try it for a Western-inspired dress code!).
Size Range: 0–12
A Sunny Halter
An abstract watercolor-inspired design is splashed across this sunny yellow slip dress, giving it a springtime upgrade we love for weddings. Pair it with wedge platforms or kitten heels and flowery earrings.
Size Range: XXS–XXL
A Fringed Frock
Even for all their similarities, trending dresses for wedding guests usually also have an element of uniqueness, a personalized factor that sets them apart. Here, it's the monochromatic fringe added to the slit and hem of this classic slip style. Ruching on the side and a high neck are ultra-flattering details.
Size Range: Regular: 0–20; Tall: 2–16; Petite: 00–14
A Crisscross Halter
This look combines two forever trends: a satin fabrication and a floral print. Plus, the length and silhouette work equally well for formal affairs or outdoor weddings, making this a truly timeless piece you'll wear again and again.
Size Range: XS–XL
