I'm a fashion editor, so naturally I'm the one everyone in my friend group comes to for outfit advice. I'd like to think I'm pretty helpful, but I'd be lying if I said I never received a men's wedding attire question that left me stumped. TBH: Wedding dress codes for guys can be tricky. Tux or suit? Tie or no tie? It's almost like there's unwritten rules that everyone's expected to know. Well, if you didn't know said rules, don't worry; neither did I. That is, until I sat down with industry experts to find out exactly what guys should (and shouldn't) be wearing to weddings. What Do Guys Wear to Weddings?

When thinking about what to wear to a wedding, your best resource is going to be the couple's wedding website. Here, you'll find information about the event's dress code or theme, which should help guide your attire choices. When it comes down to specifics–like how you style your suit–there's a bit more flexibility than you might think. "With menswear, it's all about feeling comfortable and wearing what reflects your personal style," says Jason Jackson, President and COO of Generation Tux. According to Michelle Durpetti, Founder of Michelle Durpetti Events, "wedding fashion in 2025 is shaping up to be a celebration of individuality and creativity." So, while keeping your personal style top-of-mind, read these expert tips to help curate your look.

Should guys always wear a suit to a wedding?

Wearing a suit is a safe bet for most weddings, but there are some instances where one might not be required. For black-tie and formal events, a suit and tie is the standard. For cocktail and semi-formal events, on the other hand, the choice is really up to you: Coordinated suit or blazer and slacks. For casual events, you should skip the suit in favor of a more elevated version of your everyday attire.

When do guys wear a tux vs. a suit?

Tux vs. suit is an age-old debate, but deciding between the two doesn't have to be complicated. Simply put, tuxedos are more formal than suits, and should be reserved for weddings with white-tie, black-tie and formal dress codes. Suits, being the more versatile of the two, can work for practically all other events.

What color suit should guys wear to a wedding?

While black and blue suits are go-tos for many, there are actually countless suit colors for weddings to choose from. Individuality is one of the biggest suit trends of the year, so don't be afraid to experiment with color. "Whether it's a black-tie or cocktail theme, there's something special about how vibrant colors come to life through fabric composition," says Lindsay McAshan, Senior Director of National Sales at Billy Reid. "A deep green, rich aubergine or a vibrant blue adds a fun pop without compromising the suit's versatility for future events," she adds.

Do guys have to wear a tie to a wedding?

The very existence of the black-tie-optional dress code implies that guys don't always have to wear a tie to a wedding. But how do you know when you should and shouldn't wear one? Well, think of it this way: If you're wearing a tuxedo, you should always pair it with a tie (it just wouldn't be complete without one). If you're wearing a suit, a tie is a classic way to accessorize, but you could opt for a pocket square or lapel pin instead. If you're wearing a button down and slacks (or any other casual pieces), skip the tie entirely. Keep in mind that some types of ties work best for specific dress codes (ie: bow ties almost always lean formal).

Can guys wear white to a wedding?

You've probably heard the cardinal rule of wedding guest attire which is that you should never wear white to a wedding. The truth is that this mainly applies to wearing white dresses. If you've ever found yourself wondering, "Can guys wear a white shirt to a wedding?," the answer is a resounding"yes." It's totally acceptable to wear a white shirt under your tuxedo or suit. In fact, most guys do. Now, if you're considering wearing a white suit or dinner jacket, you might want to run it past the couple first. In most cases, an all-white outfit is an example of what not to wear to a wedding, since the shade is traditionally reserved for the bride.

What Every Dress Code Means for Guys

Now that you've got answers to your burning questions, let's decode some of the most popular wedding dress codes for guys. Keep scrolling for attire advice from industry experts.

Black-Tie Dress Code for Guys

"In a time when fashion trends tend to lean toward the casual, there's a strong desire among men to dress up and look their best for a significant occasion," says Tim Begg, Creative Director of T. Begg Tailoring. A black-tie attire event offers the perfect chance to do so. Black-tie wedding attire for guys consists primarily of classic black tuxedos, clean white dress shirts and polished black dress shoes. While the rules of this dress code are a bit more rigid, guests have the chance to express their individuality through unique tailoring and accessories. According to Emily Blumberh, Showroom Manager and Sales Director at Billy Reid, cumberbunds are back and better than ever–they're a great way to make a black-tie outfit your own.

Formal Dress Code for Guys

Formal attire weddings offer a bit more flexibility than black-tie ones, especially when it comes to color. While it's still customary to wear a tuxedo or suit for this type of event, it doesn't necessarily have to be black. Bold colors and patterns are totally welcome, especially when they lean into the theme of the wedding. Formal dress clothes for guys can also vary depending on the venue and season. "For fabrics, velvet continues to be a showstopper for cooler seasons, while textured linen and lightweight wool blends are perfect for summer celebrations," says Durpetti. "These bold choices let guys make a stylish, memorable statement at a formal event without overshadowing the rest of the wedding aesthetic," she adds.

Semi-Formal Dress Code for Guys

If you think of formality as a scale, semi-formal attire for guys would fall right in the middle. It's not formal enough to require wearing a tux, but not quite casual enough to warrant wearing jeans. Instead, go for a classic suit and tie or a blazer and slacks. This dress code offers plenty of flexibility when it comes to colors and patterns, so take it as a chance to step outside your comfort zone. A festive tie or pocket square is another great way to elevate your semi-formal 'fit, but it's not required that you wear one. For footwear, choose a clean pair of black or brown loafers.

Cocktail Dress Code for Guys

So, what is appropriate for a cocktail dress code for guys? Well, you can think of it as the evening counterpart to semi-formal attire. Cocktail attire leans a bit more into the celebratory nature of weddings, and for that reason, they're the perfect chance to have fun with fashion. "For cocktail events, fabrics such as satin, crepe, and jacquard offer a mix of elegance and personality, while details like bold buttons, unexpected pops of color, or metallic embellishments create a unique statement," says Durpetti. "Accessories like wide-brim hats or statement shoes can further elevate the look, ensuring the outfit feels as powerful and celebratory as the person wearing it," she adds.

Casual Dress Code for Guys

Casual wedding looks for guys can really be an elevated version of what you would wear on a normal day. When in doubt, you can't go wrong with a pair of chinos or slacks and a nice button-down shirt or polo. If you want to add an additional element to your look, you could throw a blazer or sportcoat over the top, but it's not required. In terms of footwear, go for a loafer or ankle boot instead of sneakers. Oh, and if you were wondering, we don't typically recommend wearing jeans to a wedding, but you could totally make them work if the event is taking place at a laidback locale, like a barn or backyard.
