Exactly What to Wear to a Country Club Wedding
If you've been invited to a wedding at a country club, you can most likely expect an elegant affair that feels more traditional and sophisticated. Country clubs typically feature beautiful, large indoor spaces, as well as impeccable grounds, like an expansive golf course with impressive views. Many guests might wonder what to wear to a country club wedding, and while that answer ultimately depends on the dress code, there are some general things to keep in mind when shopping for an outfit.
Since country clubs tend to be on the more traditional side, you should plan for your attire to be a bit more formal. "When selecting your outfit for a country club wedding, guests should lean towards classic, traditional, and elegant options," suggests Lesley Brickman, stylist and owner of The One Gown. You can find suitable clothing options at retailers such as Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Anthropologie and Lulus, all of which sell a wide variety of gowns, formal dresses, and suits and tuxedos.
Below is a guide on everything you need to know about dressing for a country club wedding, as well as outfit suggestions you can buy now.

What to Wear to a Country Club Wedding
Keep the dress code in mind, but shop for looks that are elegant and classic.
More Formal Attire
A country club wedding isn't the best place to wear something more modern and risqué. Skip the tiny mini dress or jeans and opt for traditional options that feel a bit more formal instead of casual. If you're unsure of the dress code, just assume it's something on the formal side— you're better off being a little overdressed. "An easy option is a midi-length dress with classic details or a suit and tie," Brickman says.
Dress Code Appropriate Clothing
Most country club weddings require a specific dress code and that's usually something pretty formal. "For weddings hosted at country clubs, you can expect more formal attire requirements," says Portland-based stylist Grace Thomas, owner of Built Gracefully. "Some country clubs may even require black tie for their events. A tuxedo may be expected by men, which in that case, go with a traditional black tie option. For something requesting semi-formal, a suit and tie will be the best option for men."
For women, Thomas recommends a below-the-knee dress as the most casual option, and a full-length gown for a formal wedding.
Light and Low-Key Colors
A lot of country clubs like to incorporate their outdoor spaces into a wedding, meaning many take place in the warmer weather. Both Thomas and Brickman suggest light and bright colors in lighter weight fabrics. "As most country clubs have beautiful outdoor spaces and grounds, expect to see greenery incorporated in these color palettes," Thomas notes.
Going to a country club wedding in the winter? "For cooler temps, fabrics such as crepe or velvet may be more appropriate, as well as richer hued jewel tones or black," Brickman says. You can always go for a more neutral palette, with shades like black and nude. However, just like any other wedding, avoid wearing white out of respect for the bride.
Simple Patterns
If you want to do more than just a solid color, Brickman says that pretty floral patterns can be a good option for spring and summer weddings. However, if you're going to go for a patterned dress, keep it simple. "I'd be careful before choosing loud prints and patterns, as these may not align with the overall attire expected at the venue," Thomas says. Remember, you want to go for a more classic and elegant vibe here.
Versatile Shoes
A lot of weddings at country clubs will incorporate both outdoor and indoor spaces. That means you'll want to wear shoes that feel comfortable whether you're walking on grass or a polished tile floor. "If the invite or couple's wedding website says that the ceremony will be on the golf course, ladies should select a thicker heeled shoe to avoid tripping," Brickman suggests. Avoid stilettos that may get stuck in the grass, or any very light colored shoes that could get stained outside.
Light Layers
Again, keep that outdoor/indoor situation in mind and know that it might get chilly as the night goes on, especially if the wedding is being held during transitional weather, like the fall or spring. "A simple shawl will be important as these styles of venues may have a drop in temperature in the evening," Thomas says. Something like a soft cashmere throw is also a good idea.
Minimalist Accessories
When it comes to accessories like jewelry and handbags, keep things simple. As a general wedding rule, Brickman recommends never over-accessorizing. "Too many, or too 'loud' accessories can ruin an outfit and make a wedding guest look too costume-y," she says. "Country club weddings tend to be more timeless than they are trendy, so select elegant jewelry, shoes and other accessories over 'of the moment' items."
That doesn't mean you have to avoid trends altogether, though. "If you really want to wear those cool new heels you just bought after seeing them on TikTok, pair them with a more classic dress and jewelry for the perfect balance of traditional with a twist," Brickman suggests.
