Traditionally, wearing denim is a major wedding faux pas. However, the modern wedding landscape embraces a wider range of aesthetics. So, when the invite or wedding website indicates a casual, boho or Western wedding dress code, a fashion question arises: can you wear jeans to a wedding? Well…it depends. A Canadian tuxedo might raise some eyebrows, but there are different ways to integrate denim cleverly into your wedding wardrobe (that fit the ceremony's vibe and venue).

To help you master wearing jeans to a wedding, while looking your best, we consulted a denim expert for styling tips. Plus, we included some chic denim picks that you can shop now.

Can You Wear Jeans to a Wedding?

Typically, jeans are an incredibly inappropriate wardrobe choice to wear to a wedding, which are usually deemed 'dressy' events and the outfits reflect that out of respect for the couple. On the other hand, "some weddings are more laid-back occasions where denim is a suitable option. So, the answer depends on the wedding's formality," says Roni Hirshberg, co-founder of Generation Love, a contemporary fashion brand with a denim line. To understand whether you can rock denim wedding attire, start by checking out the wedding invitation and website for the dress code. Specifically, "Look into the venue and time of the event," she says. This will provide guidelines and specifics that will narrow down your outfit options.

"Black-tie and formal events are always a clear no for jeans," Hirshberg says. Instead, opt for an elegant cocktail dress, sleek pantsuit or gown. For semi-formal or dressy casual events, there is a small possibility that jeans are allowed, but proceed with caution. If you get the okay to rock denim, "a nice pair of embellished or tailored jeans with a statement blouse and heels could absolutely work," she says. For bohemian affairs, "opt for a dramatic high rise, wide leg pair and a statement belt." An option for Western or rustic themes is "dark bootcut jeans with a blazer and cowboy boots." Finally, a casual or daytime backyard wedding is where denim could really shine. For example, "a straight leg jean in a medium or light wash" or a light wash jean jacket layered over a flowy maxi dress or jumpsuit is a relaxed-yet-polished look.

4 Tips for Wearing Jeans to a Wedding

1. Ditch Distressed Styles

Typically, distressed denim is associated with a casual, laid-back aesthetic. So, for a more polished look, avoid large rips or heavy distressing that can appear too relaxed, sloppy or juvenile. If you want to add a touch of flair to your jeans, the key lies in subtlety. Opt for a style with minimal fading or an even wash, like these pairs below, which bring some edge to an otherwise polished outfit.

2. Embrace Tailored Silhouettes

What's trending doesn't always look best, and that's especially true for denim silhouettes. So, skip any extreme looks if you want to look upscale—whether it's overly tight skinnies or baggy and oversized cargos. Instead, Hirshberg says, "go for styles with very sharp, tailored silhouettes like trousers" like wide-leg, boot cut or flares. Next, ensure that your jeans fit perfectly and get them tailored if necessary.

3. Opt for a Darker Wash

Whether it's navy or black, deep colored denim is a versatile wardrobe staple that can be disguised as regular pants but offers the comfort of broken-in jeans. When it comes to weddings, "go for dressier washes like dark indigo denim for a sophisticated look," Hirshberg says. They are especially appropriate for semi-formal events and look super refined with a silky blouse. Or wear make it even dressier by wearing jeans and a blazer for a wedding.

Can You Wear Black Jeans to a Wedding?

Yes, here's how to pull it off. Go for a pair with an even wash, since faded styles can look worn out. To make them feel luxe, "opt for a trouser cut or a pair with a wax coating that will give them a leather look," says Hirshberg. Also, ditch the sneakers and top off your look with sleek sandals, heels or boots.

Can You Wear a Jean Jacket to a Wedding?

Jean jackets are perfect cover ups for "super casual backyard or beach weddings," Hirshberg says. Layer them on for spring or fall weddings, especially for chilly evening receptions. Or use them to dress down a dress with a more formal fabric, like silk or lace.

Can You Wear a Denim Dress to a Wedding?

The right denim dress can be a chic and modern choice for a rustic or boho wedding. To make it feel wedding worthy, go with a fashionable style that "is flattering and appropriate for the venue," Hirshberg says. Therefore, avoid any mini dress, body con or distressed dresses that will look more suited for weekend wear.

Can You Wear Jeans to a Wedding Rehearsal?

If the couple has specifically mentioned a casual dress code for the rehearsal events, then jeans are acceptable. Since it's always better to dress up slightly for these events, pair your denim with elevated items. So, wear your jeans with a nice blouse or blazer and "a cropped denim jacket over an elegant dress," says Hirshberg.
