Best Time to Honeymoon in Chile

When you should visit Chile all depends on where you plan to go once you're in the country. If you want to experience Patagonia, the best time to visit is during the Southern Hemisphere's summer months, October to March. If you primarily want to stick to Chile's wine regions, you'll likewise want to visit during the South American summer or early fall months, from October to April, before temperatures dip down into the 30s. However, if you plan on visiting Santiago and the surrounding regions, you'll find that you can visit most months of the year and still enjoy pleasant temperatures.

Want to travel throughout the entire country? Then your best bet is a trip between October and March.

    Best weather: October to March.
Festival highlights: The Vendimia Festival in March celebrates the grape harvest with wine tastings, music and dance, predominantly in wine regions like Colchagua Valley. Another significant event is the Fiesta de la Tirana in July, where the small town in the northern region comes alive with colorful processions and traditional dances. For music lovers, the Viña del Mar International Song Festival in February showcases famous artists in a week-long event.

    Chile Honeymoon Planning Tips

The great thing about a Chile honeymoon is that there's so much to do. You can very easily experience romance, art, culture, cuisine and adventure all without ever leaving this country—which is about 13 times smaller than the United States. From sweeping views of mountain vistas, unbelievable hot springs, ice fields, forests and volcanoes, you'll never run out of things to see.

The only downside to a Chile honeymoon is that it does take a bit of time to get there, so you'll have to decide if spending an entire day or more of your honeymoon on a flight is in your best interest. Just something to keep in mind before choosing this location and buying plane tickets.

Entry requirements: A valid US passport.
    Language:
    Spanish.
Location: Chile is a long, narrow country stretching along the western edge of South America, bordered by Peru to the north, Bolivia and Argentina to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
    Currency: The Chilean Peso (CLP).
Flight time to Destination: From Miami, direct flights are usually around 8 hours.
Getting around: Chile's extensive network of buses and domestic flights makes traveling between regions super easy. For more freedom and flexibility, renting a car is advisable, especially for exploring more remote areas like Patagonia.

    Chile Honeymoon Itinerary Ideas

You'll most likely land in Santiago, so it makes sense to spend at least a few days of your honeymoon in this Chilean city, even if you plan to spend the bulk of your time elsewhere. Museums, romantic restaurants, Instagram-worthy architecture, boutiques—it all makes up for a cosmopolitan honeymoon experience that you won't want to miss.

If all you hear when someone says "Chile" is "wine, wine and more wine," you'll want to visit Casablanca, the romantically named wine valley that offers not just wineries, but also beaches, mountain views and endless ways to enjoy the fresh air and great outdoors. If you'd like your wine with a side of urban sophistication, try Valparaiso, with its charming city streets that pair nicely with the nearby vineyards.

Of course, for a truly adventurous honeymoon, a visit to Patagonia is a must. Here, you can choose to go as rugged or luxurious as you'd like. You can find tour providers that offer a full spectrum of experiences. The Atacama Desert is also worth a visit for adventurous couples, with its lunar landscape and views of the Andes.

Take a Sip of Chilean Wine Country

You have more than a few options when it comes to exploring Chile's wine country. Beyond Casablanca Valley, there's also Colchagua Valley, which is known for its warm-weather reds and is compared to Napa Valley; Maipo Valley, a historic wine-growing region known for its cabernet-based wines; and Maule Valley, situated in the South and the largest wine region of them all.

Wherever you go, you'll find not only wineries to visit and plenty of wine to sample, but also myriad vineyard-set boutique hotels, spas and restaurants. What more could you want for a romantic getaway?

    Explore the Natural Scenery

If a dramatic backdrop is all you need for a romantic and adventurous honeymoon, Chile has you covered. Torres del Paine National Park sits within southern Chilean Patagonia and is popular with visitors looking to hike, camp and enjoy guided tours.

If the Atacama Desert has caught your eye, you'll want to visit the desert's Valle de la Luna, or Valley of the Moon, a well-maintained and popular tourist spot where you can enjoy the stark landscape without straying too far from civilization. Of course, if you're willing to go a bit further, you can also head over to Easter Island and Rapa Nui National Park, where the Pacific island's iconic and mysterious statues await.

    Soak up the Culture

Europe has certainly left its mark on Chile, and you can easily see this in the art and architecture in Santiago. Top cultural attractions in Santiago include the Chilean Museum of Fine Arts and the Centro Cultural Palacio de La Moneda.

This influence is also visible in the lesser-known Lake District, where the landscape resembles the European Alps. Small towns like Osorno and Valdivia have been influenced by the droves of Swiss, Austrian and German immigrants who've flocked to Chile over the decades, creating a culture unlike any other you'll find in South America.

Pro tip: Add Chile honeymoon experiences to your gift registry so that loved ones can give you one of these memorable couples activities. Make sure to post a few photos to your wedding website—this way all of your guests (including those without social media accounts) can stay up to date with your adventures.

What to Pack for a Chile Honeymoon

Your packing checklist will want to include a mixture of casual and dressier clothing, as well as layered items that can be added or removed as you travel around the country. If you plan on doing any hiking or visiting any of Chile's natural attractions, make sure to bring proper hiking shoes and clothing in your honeymoon luggage.
