How to Plan a Stunning and Romantic Rooftop Proposal
When it comes to where to propose, have you ever considered looking up? Like, up to the rooftops? Major cities and smaller cities alike have some pretty gorgeous rooftop spots with impressive views and privacy which make them a prime proposal spot. But if you're planning a rooftop proposal, there are some important factors to consider.
We spoke with Jacquelyn Aleece, founder of The Wedding Plan & Company based in Hoboken, New Jersey, for her expert insight into what you must consider when planning for a rooftop marriage proposal. With her advice, you can rest assured knowing you'll pull off a properly planned and well-thought-out proposal.

How to Plan a Romantic Rooftop Proposal
So, you've decided you want to take your proposal to new heights. There are unique factors to consider before you jump right in. Things like time of day, weather, location, permission and even how you're going to get your partner up there without being suspicious. Here's some of Aleece's best advice for your proposal on a rooftop.
Be Mindful of Decor
If you have plans to decorate your rooftop spot, just be sure you're mindful of any decor that can be ruined by high winds. "You don't want heavy or delicate pieces falling and breaking or light decor like rose petals which will fly around and be messy," Aleece warns.
Have a Backup Plan
This probably goes without saying but Aleece says rooftop proposals should always have an indoor option as a backup plan especially, "in case of inclement weather like rain, lightning, uncomfortable or dangerous heat, or high winds where hair or clothes won't look good in photos."
Plan With a Photographer
If having the moment professionally captured is important to you, consult with your photographer as you make your plans. Aleece says, "Your photographer should be able to get a good sense of direction of sunlight and wind, the background and the shots desired so that you are positioned at the correct angles. That way, you'll get the desired effect and capture the moment."
Consult With Someone at the Property
Talking with someone who owns or manages the property can be super helpful. Aleece suggests asking if there are helipads on neighboring buildings—for example, hospitals or hotels. "It might sound crazy," she says, "but can be common in large cities and you want to avoid popping the question while a noisy and wind-making helicopter is coming in for a landing!"
Have a Plan for What's Next
It's easy to get caught up in all the details of the actual proposal and then not think about what you're going to do right after—but Aleece stresses the importance of having a plan. Ask yourself, "Are you having a photo shoot with a photographer? Have you planned a dinner on the rooftop? Are family and friends popping out and surprising your partner on the rooftop? Do you have champagne on ice with glassware? Make sure to have a plan once your partner says yes on the rooftop!" It's a great idea to consider working with a proposal planner to take care of the details.
Consider Who Else Has Access
Think about the rooftop you've chosen and consider who else might be there or could potentially be there for your big moment as you ask "Will you marry me?" Is it private? Can you rent the rooftop for your proposal? Or, are you winging it? Aleece says, "No answer is right or wrong but you'll have to factor in noise levels of other people or strangers being in photos. Also if you are on a public rooftop you probably are very limited to the kind of decor you can bring and set up."
Don't Be Afraid of Heights
Last but certainly not least, Aleece says, "Make sure you and your partner aren't afraid of heights! The last thing you want is your partner to have an episode of anxiety while being proposed to," she says. "Sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised!"
Find a Rooftop Proposal Location Near You
Finding the perfect rooftop proposal location near you shouldn't be too much of a challenge, especially if you live in a metropolitan area. First, you'll want to consult The Knot Vendor Marketplace or Google and think about any places you already know of off the top of your head. Call around to places you know of to inquire about availability, any costs, restrictions, etc. Word of mouth is great, too.
It's also a good idea to reach out to wedding and proposal photographers to see if they have any recommendations! Sending a few DMs never hurts and could also end up connecting you to some great pros.
