Our guests LOVED the food. The appetizers got the greatest praise, but people also really liked the main meal. We opted for a buffet and paid for a server to man it since with COVID, we didn't want people to have to touch the utensils. We heard...
that the food was hot and some of the best wedding food people had tasted.
Throughout the planning process, they were very responsive to all of my questions (and I asked a LOT over the course of a year), and executed dinner and bar service flawlessly on the day. I did see another reviewer say they weren't contacted to send in their final headcount on time. I was asked exactly 10 days out as the contract specified for that list, so not sure what happened for the other couple. But I also knew their deadline and would have sent it whether prompted or not. I was my own wedding planner, so I had to be on top of details like that with all of my vendors.
When we began planning, we were frustrated that we were "stuck" with one catering option when we contracted with Rust Manor House, but after our tasting with Great Blue Heron, we knew our guests would be satisfied.
Linens were ordered and paid through catering. They were great in helping us decide how many and what sizes we needed. Rust Manor House also helped immensely in this area. The linens were delivered the day before our event.
On the wedding day, guests reported that cocktail hour was great and our signature drink was delicious. We provided GBH with ingredients, but not ratios. They made it into something our guests really loved. Guests also reported that there were a lot of apps and they felt like they could get as much of their favorite items as they wanted.
Prior to the reception, my HUSBAND :-) and I were served appetizers in the bridal suite since we opted for some time alone to catch our breaths and skipped cocktail hour. Then at dinner, we were served first.
My husband and I barely got a bite since we were caught up in the excitement, but from what we tasted, it was excellent. We were surprised that they allowed us to request something different as a special meal just for us. We got the filet and samples of everything else on the buffet (at our request). We were initially told that we couldn't take home leftovers, but they sent us home with two containers of all our remaining food. I'm not sure if we just had so much left that they decided to do that or what, but we were happy about it!
The bar (beer and wine only) service was great until about the last half hour when they started shutting down early. I suspect it's because we were down to about 10 people left at the wedding. But still. As people ordered last drinks, the staff would go to the back to grab whatever for us, so it wasn't so bad. But worth half a start off, I think.
My last critique is that the serving staff kept clearing our drinks even though we were still consuming them. I stepped away three times to take pictures on the dance floor and returned literally two or three minutes later to my drinks gone all three times, including from the sweetheart table. That was super frustrating!
To not end on a bad note, I still highly recommend GBH. I would advise another couple to specify that the bar not close down until last call and to have the cleaning staff be less overzealous about end-of-night clearing of drinks. But otherwise, they were flawless in execution and we really loved working with them.

We were sort of stuck with Great Blue Heron Catering because they were contracted with the venue we chose. Although everyone seemed to enjoy the appetizers and the wait staff was excellent, we had several issues working with the administration,...
and we were disappointed to find out that they would not let us take home the left over food, which seemed like a real waste. Administration didn't bother to follow up to find out what our final guest count was, and took so long to respond when we asked about it that we were left scrambling a week before our wedding trying to figure out how to pay them because they wouldn't accept checks less than 10 days out from the event. They're really over-priced for the quality of the food they provide as well: while the appetizers were good, the meals were really just sort of...typical wedding food. It's unfortunate that you have to use them with the venue we chose or pay a pass-off fee to use an outside vendor, otherwise we definitely would have gone with someone else.

ure my husband and I were happy with each of the elements they prepared. I have a gluten allergy and several of our guests have celiac. GBH does cater to food allergies, however, it seems they could use some additional education on cross contamination—or at least in better communicating to clients the precautions they take. We chose items that were all GF and our guests didn't notice a difference and we experienced no issues of gluten-induced illness. Great Blue Heron Catering provided the catering for our wedding at The River View. While they were the only vendor allowed at the venue, we were happy to work with them because they were professional and competitively price, especially when i...
t came to alcohol.
We worked with them to specially craft a pescatarian wedding menu and to substitute in specific wines and beers that we personally enjoyed. We spoke to quite a few other vendors about alcohol packages/substitutions during our planning process, and in large part, we went with this venue because of their flexibility on the matter. Great Blue Heron Catering was very easy to work with to craft the perfect beer/wine list and they did not have any kind of service charge for the substitutions. Amazing.
The service was very good throughout the evening and the staff did a nice job overall. The food was tasty and well presented, the place settings were elegant. We had to switch up the plans a bit, moving our wedding indoors due to weather, and the staff had the room turned over from ceremony to reception, all on time.
The only areas that needed improvement were primarily focused around the cocktail hour. We were fortunate enough to plan the menu with the head chief himself and we all discussed that this would be a pescatarian event. To make this fit the existing menu, we had to strike some of the meat options from the stationary appetizer tables. Regardless, one of the appetizers was presented with sausage. It's not clear where the communication breakdown occurred. We imagine that regardless of the planning for each menu item, the overarching theme of pescatarian would have been underlined multiple times on our paperwork and this would have been caught. Also, after the event, we were saddened that quite a few of our guests did not even know that there were passed appetizers being offered. As we understand it, though we did not witness it ourselves, the plates were assaulted by our guests as soon as they arrived. The waitstaff perhaps could have been better about managing the guests to ensure that the appetizers made it around the room. Finally, our dessert table was not stocked with any plates so our guests were having to improvise.
We knew that we were taking a risk when offering only fish options for the main meal when providing dinner for more than 180 guests. Fish is a challenging dish for such a large crowd. The main meals were just OK, a bit cold, a bit rubbery. We don't hold it against the caterer, but we wouldn't recommend this catering company if that is what you are looking for at your wedding.

le to answer all of our questions. We also enjoyed the catering tasting where we were able to bring four guests and sample the entire menu. We were even able to try one of their signature drinks, a raspberry lemonade martini, which we loved so much we even chose it for the bride’s signature drink.
Prior to the event, I sent over our final guest count as well as table assignments. I was told each table could seat 8-10 people so in my spreadsheet I created three columns: 1) table number 2) number of seats and 3) guest names. I even color coded ways to differentiate special requests. Despite this level of detail, over half of our tables did not have enough chairs nor place settings so as guests were finding their tables right before dinner they were very confused and standing around their tables. Bridal party introductions were delayed since they had to re-set-up tables and place settings on the fly. This was embarrassing and frustrating for us since not only had I sent over clear seating assignments but we also paid per person and there were not enough seats for the number of people we paid for. We also felt bad for our guests since it made it very obvious some tables were overcrowded.
Furthermore, the signature drink we loved from the catering tasting was watered down and did not taste the same. One of my bridesmaids even spit it out after trying a sip. A major disappointment since I’d been recommending all of my guests to try it since it was so delicious at the tasting.
Lastly, we were given the option of whether or not the bartender would place a tip jar out but we decided not to have the tip jar so we we could tip him/her ourselves on behalf of all guests. We tipped vendors in advance so we accounted for the lack of guest tips when finalizing his tip. According to guests there was a tip jar even though we specifically said no and it was filled all night (great for the bartender, of course) but it’s the fact that we said no and based our tip off of that, which was frustrating.
With regards to the food, they did an awesome job and we did receive lots of compliments about how delicious everything tasted. However, the lack of attention to detail, especially the discrepancy with the seating arrangements, was very disappointing to us.

They were very attentive to us during the wedding, making sure that in all the craziness, we had the food and drink we needed, and knew where our leftovers (which were plentiful!) would be going at the end of the night. amazing, and that carried through to the wedding day. We got tons of compliments from every single guest we spoke to about how delicious the food was, and how great the bartenders were. My only complaint is that the coffee and tea that we requested to be served, never was. Not sure what happened there, but it's not a deal breaker. We also had the experience most people have at weddings, where full glasses and plates of food were taken by staff before they were done with them. This is also not a deal breaker, but something to note for GBH for the future :)
Overall, we could not have been happier with GBH as our vendor. I got messages weeks later that people were still thinking about how good the food was. They brought a plates full of everything that was at the buffet over to me and my husband so we could try all of it before we had to socialize and I've honestly never had such delicious wedding food in my life. The chicken was amazing. All other wedding chicken I've had has been so dry but theirs was delicious! We chose to have the beer and wine package and it included a signature drink as well which was a huge hit. They were amazing with setup, they were amazing with cleanup. It was all so good. The only negative would be that towards the end of the night they kind of ran out of glasses and started serving things in plastic cups (totally not a big deal to me at all). And I have a suspicion they were running out of forks and plates for the cake. But being that they literally had to bring all of that with them and guess roughly how much that would be needed I think they did an amazing job.

The food at the wedding was hot, fresh, and delicious! We did a brunch buffet, and they had plenty of everything and never ran out of anything. y ones he makes, offered to turn an appetizer we loved into a main course option, AND gave us two signature cocktails instead of one at no extra cost. Everything tasted great at the cocktail hour and reception! My only complaint is that the bar line at the cocktail hour got rather long. Perhaps consider a second bar if you have more than 150+ guests so everyone can enjoy the party rather than wait in line.

The Great Blue Heron Catering comes as a packaged deal when you book The Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. You can bring your own caterers in but that actually will cost you extra and you still have to use GBHC for bar. So we went with th...
e buffet package and passed hors d'oervers and beer/wine package (they have three levels). The food itself was amazing but there was an issue with timing and GBHC was not as flexible as one would like. We felt as if they were pushing us the entire night (even though no one else felt it). If we had done a passed meal, maybe that would have been better? Not sure.

As mother of the Bride I wanted to share with you that Great Blue Heron was wonderful from the tasting to the plated meals! Our daughter’s wedding took place at The Rust Manor in Leesburg, VA, 5/16/15.

food was fabulous! The bacon wrapped scallops/appetizer and grilled beef tenderloin and salmon as the main course were amazing. We went with a totally gluten free menu from appetizers to the main course due to a severe family food allergy. While we were worried about how the food would taste as not everyone is capable of cooking gluten free, Dennis reassured us that the food would be wonderful. As we sat at the tasting Dennis began his presentation of the food choices, which were out of this world. We knew at that point we did not need to look any further and Blue Heron was the caterer for us.
Thank you for a wonderful evening of celebrating Dennis and Great Blue Heron Catering. I can’t say enough good things about Dennis and his staff. We ate, drank and some got married.

ey allowed us to include both myself and the groom, as well as both of our sets of parents. The food was delicious, which made it really hard to choose only a couple options (although I highly recommend the bacon covered dates!). They were incredibly helpful in working within our budget. The day of everything went smoothly and I received a lot of compliments from guests. The head chef was particularly wonderful to work with. He made the small details count. For example, he made sure that both my husband's and my dinner was plated to save us time (despite the fact that we had a buffet), and had a server deliver a plate of appetizers to the bridal party between the ceremony and pictures so that we wouldn't miss out and would have a bite to eat. All and all I can't recommend them highly enough!

We loved Great Blue Heron. Our wedding was at the Atrium at Meadowlark, and if you use GBH, you get a discount, so we went into the tasting really hoping it would be good. The food at the tasting was delicious, and the chef, Brian, came out and...
spoke with us personally about the dishes.
GBH gave us a great deal for both food and bar. Of course, you always worry that food won't hold up to such massive group cooking, but GBH was perfect. So many guests said it was some of the best wedding food they'd ever had.
GBH arranged to have appetizers waiting for us in a private room after the ceremony, which was nice so we could make sure to get a bite to eat. They also offered up an option for us to have a "to go" box, which we definitely took them up on. They actually gave us two large roasting pans worth of food! My only regret with leaving the next day for the honeymoon is that our family got to enjoy the leftovers and we couldn't.
Brian happily accommodated all of our special requests. We even had two "last minute" vegans, and that was no problem at all. He confirmed the menu at the rehearsal and made sure to check in before leaving after dinner at the wedding.
If I could hire Brian to come cook dinner for me every night, I would!

The head chef, Bryan, was very accommodating for my 180 wedding guests at The Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens for my reception. We had many guests with dietary restrictions so we tried to be as explicit with our instructions as possible...
, but it was difficult to accommodate everyone.
After the initial menu tasting, Bryan told us he could make anything we wanted if there was any food item we really wanted. He is very creative with his ideas and that's what I love about GBH. We choose to have a full, open bar and they had a wide variety of liquor, beer, and wine for our guests to chose from.
After the reception, some of my guests give me some negative feedback about the servers but overall, I was very happy with the choices and quality. I would recommend GBH to future brides and grooms

I will start by saying that it was not always a perfect experience, but finished flawlessly. During the initial months of planning we experienced some difficulty and communication problems. At one point I had to stop working with them and make ...
my husband do it because I felt my requests and concerns were being ignored.
As the time grew closer, however, things came together. When we met Chief Bryan at our tasting, things started to look up. Awesome guy! Then we had some menu changes and our number of attendees went down and they were helpful in changing things around. We got much closer to what we wanted at that point. And on the day of, everything was wonderful. The food was fantastic and the service was even better. The bartenders took really good care of everyone, especially us, the servers were kind, hardworking, and discrete, and the set up of everything was perfect. Finally one of the best highlights was our head waiter/captain, Chris. He was so attentive and caring and made such amazing effort to make sure everything was perfect for my husband and me.
The fact that they work so closely with the the Atrium staff made their work even better because everything was seamless. I would really recommend them, if you can have a little patience in the beginning.

iduals and was willing to work within my budget. However, GBH is stretched very thin with all of the weddings it does at its three venue sites. Their high demand makes it very difficult to get things done. I was negotiating catering items up until the week of the wedding, which was stressful. There were also several accounting errors which added to the stress the week of the wedding. If GBH would hire a few more staff to help coordiate each event, they would be a great catering option.
