When Are Silk Dresses for Weddings Appropriate?

Fabric lovers, take heart: Silk dresses for weddings are almost always appropriate. Whether it's pure silk or, more commonly (and affordably), a combination of materials that mimic it (typically viscose, polyester and rayon), the sheen on a silk dress is what sets it apart from other fabrications and elevates it from a style standpoint. That means it's appropriate for nearly any wedding dress code, from semi-formal attire to black tie. To cater your look to the dress code, change up the length (midis make perfect cocktail dresses for wedding guests), sleeves and silhouette (formal wedding guest dresses are typically more fitted and longer).

Seasonally, silk and satin styles are appropriate all year around, but from a comfort standpoint, they're best for spring and fall weddings. Summer weddings—especially ones with outdoor ceremonies—can be hot, and all the chic parasols and collapsible fans in the world can't curb the sweat. Satin and silk materials, while light and airy, are non-absorbent, so they'll show sweat stains almost immediately. On the other end of the spectrum, the fabric is typically thin and lightweight, providing little to no warmth for a wintry wedding. If you love the fabric, though, fear not: There are other types of silk outfits for weddings to consider, such as a shiny pantsuit or floral satin pants and a top.
