Nina Dobrev and Shaun White have reportedly ended their engagement. A source close to the couple confirmed the news to People on September 11. While the couple did not comment on their split, the insider said "it was a mutual decision, and wasn't an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another." The Knot has reached out to reps for the couple for confirmation but has not yet heard back.

News of the breakup comes almost one year after the famous couple announced their engagement on October 30, 2024, with Dobrev writing on Instagram, "RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé 💍♾️." In photos from the intimate proposal, the three-time Olympic gold medalist could be seen popping the question amid romantic clusters of candles underneath a lavish arch of white flowers at the Golden Swan restaurant in New York City. In conversation with Vogue, the Vampire Diaries actress revealed that he faked an invitation to the CFDA/Vogue dinner with Anna Wintour to mislead her. "He made the invite look so legitimate," she recalled.

The couple's engagement ocurred five years after they began dating in 2019. Look back on their relationship timeline below.

Inside Nina Dobrev and Shaun White's Proposal

Although he cycled through a few different ideas, snowboarder and Olympic icon Shaun White decided to propose to his girlfriend on a random October evening. In collaboration with her publicist, White orchestrated a fake CFDA/Vogue dinner with Anna Wintour.

When the day arrived, Dobrev was (unfashionably) late—a big no-no for Wintour's exclusive events. "I was in a panic that Anna's waiting for me," Dobrev told the publication. When she arrived at the West Village restaurant, she was shocked to see her boyfriend standing on a rose-covered floor decorated with clusters of candles and lush bouquets. "I went into shock. I just froze and stared at him," she remembered. Then, she said, "No, no, no!"

As for the athlete, he knew he had her completely fooled. "I knew she was nervous because when she's nervous she'll make jokes. She's like, 'So, wait, Anna's not here?'" White added. Dobrev accepted the proposal, and the fiancés celebrated with champagne and caviar. "Eventually we realized—other than the caviar—we hadn't eaten anything. So we ordered Shake Shack and dumplings to the Golden Swan," she said.

Nina Dobrev's Engagement Ring Details

Nina Dobrev's engagement ring was designed by Lorraine Schwartz. According to Olivia Landau, gemologist and founder of The Clear Cut, this celebrity engagement ring could have been well over five carats. "Nina's ring appears to be an elongated cushion-cut diamond between five and seven carats," she told us. "It is set on a thin platinum solitaire band with north-south-east-west compass prongs to accentuate the beautiful rounded corners of her diamond." If the diamond is a natural mined gemstone, Landau estimates that it could be worth between $100,000 and $300,000.

Nina Dobrev and Shaun White's Relationship Timeline

Nina Dobrev and Shaun White ended their engagement after five years together. The pair met at an awards show in 2012, but they were formally re-introduced in 2019 at an event in Florida. The pandemic fast-tracked their relationship, leading them to move in together in 2020. They hard-launched their romance in May of that year.

In August 2024, they served as the ultimate wedding guest inspo at Gossip Girl actress Vanessa Szohr's wedding. As longtime besties, Szohr asked Dobrev to serve as her maid of honor—a role she went "above and beyond" for. "I couldn't believe how magical and special she made everything for the wedding," Szohr exclusively told us. "I said for whoever is getting married next in our friend group, I feel bad if Nina is not their maid of honor." White attended the weekend festivities with his then-girlfriend, much to the delight of the bride's guests: "My cousins were so excited because Shaun was playing [pickleball] with them."
