Exclusive: Inside NBA Player Jason Preston's Jamaica Destination Wedding
For Utah Jazz guard Jason Preston and his wife, Micaylah (Nash) Preston, their love story began in the cafeteria at Ohio University. Then a freshman, the NBA player knew of Nash, now a marketing professional, through mutual friends. "I wanted to go up and talk to her, and the opportunity presented itself when our classes ended and we met up in the lunch room," Preston exclusively tells The Knot. After exchanging numbers, they promised to see each other later—and soon enough, they shared their first date over a Chipotle picnic on campus. The rest, of course, was history.
Jason Preston married his college sweetheart on July 20, 2024, at Round Hill Hotel & Villas in Montego Bay, Jamaica, four years after they began dating. The couple used their wedding to give back to the American Lung Association in honor of his late mother, who passed away from lung cancer when he was a teenager. With 60 loved ones in attendance, the Prestons' colorful four-day wedding was a celebration of their endearing love story and the local Jamaican culture—and we have an exclusive look inside the event here.
Inside Micaylah and Jason Preston's Wedding
After their "magical" Christmas Eve engagement in 2022, there was no question where the Prestons would host their wedding day. The couple decided on a destination wedding in Jamaica—the birthplace of his late mother, Judith Sewell, who passed away from lung cancer when Preston was 16. From the start, Preston says, "We wanted to use our wedding for a bigger purpose." To do so, they partnered with the American Lung Association to raise awareness and request charitable donations in lieu of registry items. "There are people out there who need this more than we need wedding gifts," he explains. "It's as simple as that."
For the groom, it was a heartfelt way to incorporate his mother's legacy on his big day. "She's a big part of who I am today, so including her means everything to me," he says.
The couple began touring venues exactly one year before their wedding date and instantly fell in love with Round Hill Hotel & Villas, a secluded 100-acre peninsula nestled above the sparkling Caribbean sea. Nash worked closely with their wedding planner, Kristi Lee of Details Details, and their event designer, Plush Events Jamaica, to thoughtfully curate each event. "She deserves so much credit for the amount of detail that she put into this wedding," Preston says.
As the couple's 60 guests arrived at the remote destination, the weekend began on July 18 with a "coastal cocktail" welcome party. The event highlighted an authentic jerk chicken station—the groom's favorite food—and passed hors d'oeuvres at the resort's lush infinity sundeck overlooking the ocean. The couple also used this prewedding party to unveil their signature drink of the weekend: the "Prestons in Paradise," a passionfruit rum cocktail with an incredibly apropos "islandy vibe." It was a particularly emotional reunion for the groom, who was able to spend time with family members who still live in Jamaica.
The festivities continued on Friday with the "timeless elegance" rehearsal dinner at the property's sprawling Estate Villa. The couple's florist, Tai Flora, enhanced the space with lush clusters of white flowers, greenery, and romantic candles. Again, the couple and their guests indulged in a buffet-style dinner with classic Jamaican dishes as a nod to their Caribbean setting.
Ahead of the wedding, the couple agreed that one of the elements they were most looking forward to were the rehearsal dinner speeches—particularly because the groom's aunt (who became his legal guardian after his mom passed), would be taking the mic. "She has a big personality," he smiles, "so I was excited to hear what she had to say."
On the morning of July 20, the bride got ready with her friends and her mother—who served as the matron of honor—in the Estate Villa. It was a special moment, as she wasn't able to go wedding dress shopping with her friends, who live on the opposite side of the country. Even her mom had to join her final wedding dress shopping appointment via FaceTime.
"I would bring a tripod and the consultants would carry her around the store," Nash recalls with a laugh. She ultimately discovered the perfect gown by accident as one appointment was coming to an end. "I ended up finding my dress because my stylist picked it out on a rack when I was about to leave," she says. The design in question was an airy strapless A-line gown with three-dimensional floral appliques, which she paired with sheer gloves adorned with pearlescent flowers—a perfect embodiment of her "whimsical luxury" vision.
Before the main event began, the couple opted to enjoy each other's company by doing a private first look. "It was important for us to share that time earlier in the day, where we could have that moment to ourselves instead of in front of everybody," Nash says.
The ceremony took place on the spa lawn overlooking the glittering coastline. Guests were delighted by the bride's grandmother, who scattered petals down the aisle as the honorary flower girl.
Whimsical flowers in pastel shades of pink, blue, orange and yellow decorated the outdoor space, while a statement arch towered over the picturesque altar.
Ahead of the wedding, Nash joked that one thing she expected was for her husband to cry walking down the aisle—and, indeed, there wasn't a dry eye in the house as she made her way toward the floral altar on the arm of her father.
A live saxophonist provided classic jazz music as the event transitioned into cocktail hour, which is one of the couple's favorite genres. "Jazz is such a big part of Black American culture, so having that be a part of our wedding was important," Nash says. Before the party truly began, the newlyweds shared a first dance to "Best Part" by Daniel Caesar and H.E.R.
The bride and groom then sliced into a three-tier wedding cake decorated with flowers reminiscent of those on Nash's gown. They briefly disappeared so Nash could change into her reception look: a shorter rendition of her wedding dress, which she paired with white block heels and a miniature veil.
After enjoying another Caribbean-inspired dinner, things got "pretty crazy" on the dance floor, thanks in part to the DJ who kept the fun going late into the evening. Before the night came to a close, the couple surprised their guests with a colorful display of fireworks that lit up the peninsula.
Alas, the party still wasn't over. On Sunday morning, guests enjoyed a classic breakfast bar with omelettes, pastries, smoothies, and three flavors of mimosas.
With NBA training camp set to start up later this fall, the newlyweds embarked on their European honeymoon—complete with stops in Greece, Florence and Monaco—immediately after the wedding weekend concluded.
While Preston jokes that he's happy to finally be able to wear a wedding ring, the couple is more excited to share their love story with the world. "There's permanentness to marriage," Nash says. "We've been committed to each other for over four years now, but knowing that it's officially official is what I'm most excited about."
