Olympian Adam Rippon and Jussi-Pekka "JP" Kajaala Eloped
Figure skater Adam Rippon and husband Jussi-Pekka "JP" Kajaala secretly married just before welcoming the New Year. "SURPRISE 🥂 WE ARE MARRIED," the Olympian declared on Instagram in January 2022. "One afternoon JP and I looked at each other and said the very classic *romantic* phrase of 'let's just go do it now.' So we did. It was just the three of us and it was perfect 12/31/21."
Rippon posted a photo from the outing, featuring JP and their dog. The couple announced their engagement via social media on February 10, 2021. "JP and I didn't get to see each other for almost all of 2020 because of the pandemic," Rippon wrote on Instagram. "When there was finally a chance for me to go and see him in Finland, I jumped at it. I was there for a little over two months."
"He would drive me into the Finnish forest where I would attempt to try and 'help' him shovel snow so he could keep working on the cottage he's building," Rippon continued. "So, in between all that and binging the entire 4 seasons of The Crown, we bought ourselves some rings and said that magic word.. 'duh!' We got ~*engaged*~."
In an exclusive statement to People, Rippon gave more details about the special moment. "I'm excited to marry JP because he's just the best," the Olympian said. "He's kind, he's funny, and he's just as beautiful on the inside as he is on the out (which is a lot). He's my cheerleader and I'm his. I just love him a lot."
According to the outlet, the couple met on Tinder (that's right on par with a quarter of all engaged couples, according to The Knot Jewelry and Engagement Study) and they started dating in 2018. The proposal, which took place in Kajaala's native country of Finland, was kept a secret until the social media announcement on Wednesday.
The athlete and his beau opted for a partnership proposal, one of The Knot's proposal trends. "We did everything together," Rippon told People. "We bought the rings together and picked them up at the same time. I really wanted us to have rings from Finland. I thought it would be fun to have a little piece of Finland with us all the time as JP is getting ready to move to Los Angeles hopefully by the end of the year."
When the time arrived for their respective bands to be revealed, the couple unboxed them together. Then, they each popped the question. "We did it at the same time so we both got to be the one who proposed!"
Fittingly, the social media announcement was also appropriate for COVID times with Rippon revealing the big news with a massive photo dump from Finland.
