Taylor Swift's Proposal Breakdown: Inside the Aesthetics and How to Make It Yours
After years of writing the love songs that people use as they walk down the aisle to the love of their life and have their first dance, Taylor Swift is getting married. What started with a friendship bracelet and podcast shout-out has led to a love story that has taken the world by storm, culminating in a spectacular proposal fit for a Super Bowl star and arguably the Shakespeare of our generation. (Or as Taylor referred to them with her signature slightly self-deprecating sense of humor: "your gym teacher" and "your English teacher." That's so high school.) And we have an in-depth analysis of the couple's joint Instagram announcement that garnered more than 30 million likes in less than 24 hours as Swifties around the world rejoiced.
As soon as The Knot Editors saw images of Taylor Swift's proposal, which was thoughtfully planned by Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, we reached out to our network of wedding vendors for details.
If you're ready for your engagement era, here's how to draw inspiration from the fairytale-worthy moment.

Taylor Swift's Proposal Details
Swifties are known for their investigative skills and in-depth analysis of the self-proclaimed mastermind's every move and subtle Easter Egg and there have been some major moments in 2025, from wrapping up the record-breaking Eras tour to buying back her master recordings to announcing her upcoming album The Life of a Showgirl on her boyfriend and soon-to-be brother in law's New Heights podcast to sharing that they are officially endgame. The couple included the dynamite emoji in their Instagram engagement announcement, which Swifties quickly realized was a reference to their couple moniker "TNT," based on their initials and dynamic relationship.
Swift's soon-to-be father in law, Ed Kelce, told Cleveland News 5 that the proposal happened nearly a fortnight before the announcement. A source told Page Six that the proposal of the decade happened at Kelce's home in Kansas. (Kelce reportedly bought the house mere months into dating Swift so that they could have more privacy, which can be difficult to attain when you are wooing one of the world's most famous women.) It appears that he transformed his backyard to look like the garden from her Lover photoshoot. As Aristotle posited, art is imitating life. In the titular track, Swift sang: "With every guitar string scar on my hand, I take this magnetic force of a man to my lover. My heart's been borrowed and yours has been blue, all's well that ends well to end up with you."
Eagle-eyed Swifties noticed the similarities in her hair and makeup for the podcast recording — and what looks like subtle headphone indents on her hair — and speculated that the proposal happened shortly after filming the most revealing interview Swift has done in years. (And notably the first with a lover.) During the interview, she reminisced on what she thought after Kelce made her a friendship bracelet and mentioned on the podcast that he was disappointed he didn't get to give it to her IRL when he saw her perform at the Eras tour. "This kind of felt more like I was in a John Hughes movie and he was standing outside my window with a boombox like, 'I wanna date you! Do you wanna go on a date with me? I made you a friendship bracelet.' I was like, 'If this guy's not crazy, this is sort of what I've been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager,'" the now 35-year old said. (As fans who have listened to her sing about her love life for more than a decade know, it ends up she did great things and will marry the guy on the football team as she sang about in Fearless and that the prophecy she sang about in The Tortured Poet's Department has finally been changed.) Fitting for a superstar who used to draw her lucky number on her hand with permanent marker at her concerts, the podcast launched on August 13 and the couple revealed their engagement 13 days later.
Swift's long-time publicist Tree Paine confirmed to The Associated Press that the ring is a Old Mine brilliant cut diamond and another rep told the publication that the ring was designed by Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine. The designer describes herself as a "goldsmith, hand engraver and vintage jewelry collector." (Swifties will appreciate that Artifex Fine has a Vault Collection.)
Tom Moses, the executive vice president of the Gemological Institute of America told The Knot that the diamond cut dates back to the 1800s, when artists had to shape the diamond by hand, and the original stones are extremely rare. He explained that it is difficult to find the originals because demand dissipated as new technology was invented and people recut the stones. "Now they have become very much in style in recent years. When people find a well-cut one, they would never touch it and compromise that original appearance. So my guess is that it is the original one," says Moses. "Assuming it is one of these great old historic stones, who knows what its past life has been," he says, noting that the diamond itself is between one and three billion years old.
We predict that Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's engagement and wedding will have a seismic shift or, more aptly, a sizeable Swiftonomics affect on the wedding industry. Be prepared to see a surge of vintage or vintage-inspired engagement rings, garden proposals and intimate moments captured by professional photographers. Don't just take it from us, hear it from the pros.
The Photography Was "Romantic Fine Art Editorial" Style
With the help of a photographer, the couple was able to keep things private while sharing their excitement with their nearest and dearest friends, family and millions of fans. (After all, as Swift said, "Romance isn't dead if you keep it just yours.")
Wedding photographer Emma Cleary says that an increasing number of couples are hiring professional photographers for the proposal to "set the tone" for their wedding era. "Couples want those photos to feel just as meaningful as the wedding itself. With proposals, the most powerful images are the ones that are true to life. Taylor and Travis's engagement photos don't look like a styled shoot—they look real," Cleary says. "That's the beauty of this type of photography: It captures genuine emotion in a once-in-a-lifetime moment, not something overproduced," Cleary adds.
While the photos feel candid, the photographer clearly had a pre-planned strategy. "The photography style would be best described as a blend of Romanticantic Fine Art Editorial," says Mary Angelini, the owner of Key Moment Films. "This photographer shows a whimsical shooting style during the proposal itself, shooting through trees to obtain the blurred corners of the image. Doing that makes the image of Travis on one knee feel more intimate and whimsical," Angelini adds. She says hiring a top-tier photographer with this level of shooting and editing skills could cost between $6,500 and $15,000.
The Planning
Aside from choosing the one-of-a-kind timeless ring and summoning the courage to ask the world's biggest popstar to marry him, Kelce put a lot of thought into the proposal. Although we don't know if the Kelce worked with a proposal planner, there has been a rise in couples who hire an expert to coordinate.
"The planner would have met with Travis to understand his vision, aesthetic preferences and any key relationship moments that could be incorporated in a subtle yet meaningful way. Once a plan was outlined, the planner would coordinate with all necessary vendors. This would begin with securing full privacy and surprise at the venue, a task that requires meticulous timing to ensure the atmosphere was perfectly set up and transformed just before the proposal," says proposal planner Lexi Tobin. Tobin, whose lavish proposals have gone viral on TikTok, explains that hiring a luxury planner, especially one who can execute on this skill, could cost $20,000 to $50,000, not including goods and the fee of any other vendors. Once you add that in, she estimates that Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's proposal cost more than six figures.
Amos Gott, the founder of Amos Events, reiterated that ample planning goes into such a high-profile proposal. "It's a production. From the floral installation to the styling to the photography, every detail was curated to feel effortless and cinematic. That kind of magic takes time," says Gott. He estimates that it took a minimum of six to eight weeks, from creating the concept to executing it. "For a proposal of this scale and visibility, I'd estimate anywhere from $150,000 to $250,000. That includes luxury planning services, floral design, custom installations, photography, videography, wardrobe styling and security," Gott says.
The Design
The florals and lush setting was giving Secret Garden or Alice and Wonderland, two books Swift has referenced in her extensive discography filled with a litany of literature recommendations. (In "I Hate It Here," Swift sang about escaping to secret gardens in her mind that nobody else had a key to, and Kelce made her imaginary secret garden a reality. And he has a key.)
Michelle Maslowski, the owner and creative director at the floral design company One of a Kind Events, weighed in on the gorgeous setting. "The whimsical greenery melts into the existing garden and forest to create the fairytale feeling. The peaches, purples and pinks of the roses flow in front of the couple and above their heads to create a frame that makes them the only two people in the world," says Maslowski. She estimates that the flowers and floral design cost between $10,000 and $20,000.
Tobin notes that the floral installations likely incorporated thousands of roses, hydrangeas, delphiniums, ranunculus and peonies and that the design also included the chandeliers, candles and outdoor furniture that made the moment feel so romantic and whimsical. It looked like it was plucked from the set of one of Taylor's Evermore and Folklore music videos.
The Look
Swift wore a $398 Polo Ralph Lauren striped silk-blend midi dress, $930 Louis Vuitton Isola Sandals and $4,000 FoundRae's Miniature Heart Initial earrings, $2,675 Tiffany T Diamond Wire Ring that looks like the couple's first initials, among other subtle jewels. (More proof of Swiftonomics: The dress and shoes are already sold out.) She also wore a discontinued Cartier Santos Demoiselle watch, which could cost thousands of dollars to buy second-hand. And of course, she wore her showstopping ring. Pros told The Knot that Taylor Swift's engagement ring likely cost up to $1 million. (Best believe she is bejeweled.)
The Grammy award-winner kept her hair and makeup simple and natural. "Taylor appears to be wearing her classic go to look of a crisp black winged liner, satin or a little luminous skin finish and an orange red lip," says Shani Gailbreath, founder of the wedding hair and makeup styling company Canvas + Coif. "Her hair is most likely a day or two old blowout and let her natural waves do their thing. Taylor looks chic, but soft and effortless," Gailbreath adds. Gailbreath estimates that if Swift tapped her long-time makeup artist Lorrie Turk, the hair and makeup might have cost $8,000 to $15,000.
What can we expect on her wedding day? "I could see Taylor drawing from Old Hollywood glamour, especially with her Showgirl album on the horizon and her love for classic ladies like Clara Bow and Elizabeth Taylor. With a vintage ring, I imagine satin skin, rosy cheeks and a softer take on her signature look: the obvious, refined red lip, but in a bridal rose or berry tone, paired with a clean, diffused wing," predicts Michelle Adams, a makeup artist and founder of Michelle Adams Beauty.

To preview their insights, they explain five ways to recreate the Secret Garden feel based on their years of planning.
- "For couples who want a similar aesthetic without celebrity-level budgets, it's all about styling yourself intentionally, choosing the right creative team, and carrying yourself with poise. True-to-life proposal photos and editorial wedding portraits share the same foundation: authenticity. If you want your photos to feel timeless, avoid chasing trends, stay classic, and let your personality shine through," says Cleary.
- "Lean into local talent. Emerging photographers, boutique florists and private venues often offer incredible value and artistry. You don't need a celebrity budget to create something unforgettable," says Gott.
- "Instead of opting for a private venue, consider utilizing a beautiful public space, such as a local park or botanical garden. Many cities offer these free of charge. Lighting can add an extra layer of romance. Simple fairy lights, lanterns or candles can create an immense ambiance without elaborate structures," says Tobin.
- "Working within nature gives you the coverage of botanicals without the cost. Another way to cut down would be to substitute more cost-sensitive blooms such as mums or carnations in for the premium garden roses. Sticking to all one color would help, as the florist could buy larger amounts and decrease the per stem price," says Maslowski.
- "Grab a felt tip eyeliner like the L'Oreal Paris Infallible Precision Felt Waterproof Eyeliner in Black to practice your wing. Remember to stay looking down until the liner has dried all the way so that it doesn't transfer to your upper lid and create a mess. For the lip, I love the MILANI Color Statement Lipstick in Orange Gina," says Gailbreath.
As you're planning, please keep in mind that this is your love story. "Ultimately, the goal is the same: to create an authentic and memorable experience. Taylor and Travis's proposal serves as beautiful inspiration, but the true magic lies in the love being shared," says Tobin. Cheers to that, and to the happy couple!
