Exclusive: YouTuber Alex Wassabi Is Engaged, and the Story Is *Almost* Unbelievable
The secret is out: YouTuber Alex Wassabi and his girlfriend, Alexxis Lemire, are engaged! The content creator proposed to the actress and model at the end of June, The Knot can exclusively reveal, and the lavish story is almost unbelievable.
Wassabi orchestrated a music video shoot for their own song, "Chance on Love," to truly surprise Lemire. "I was originally planning on making a solo song to propose to her with," he tells us. "But right before starting the process, she randomly said, 'We should make a song together one day.' I saw this as fate and we decided to write a song about our story."
Knowing he wanted to follow the golden rule of engagements—ensuring her nails would be done on the day of—he secretly collaborated with two friends to schedule a day to record the music video, all while knowing he would propose at the end of filming. "I had to turn my phone location off every time I went on a secret proposal related mission," he says. "I'm with her every single day, so I had to be extremely careful with what I said and where I've been."
As Wassabi's subscribers know, "Chance on Love" isn't the first original song he penned. Before popping the question, he also wrote a tune titled "Ever Mine" to ask Lemire's father for permission to propose. "Every time I see [her dad], he's chosen a new song for the father-daughter dance at our wedding," Wassabi explains. "I thought making a personal song dedicated to him was the obvious move. I'm not a singer by any means, but I knew it was the right decision."
Despite all the behind-the-scenes scheming that had been in play for months, Lemire was "gobsmacked" when her boyfriend got down on one knee while filming. "I didn't realize what was happening until after he said my name and tears started welling up in his eyes," she says. "That's when I thought 'Oh…it's happening!' For such an elaborate plan, I'm shocked I didn't have even the slightest idea."
Although the actual proposal was a surprise, Lemire did have an inkling it was coming. Six months prior, the couple went engagement ring shopping together to begin the search for the perfect design. "I said, 'Why would I secretly ask your friends what they think you might like when I can bring you and get the exact ring you want in the future?'" Wassabi recalls. "Of course, I warned her that I would be 'Wassabi-fying' it a little bit, making it unlike any other ring."
The final product was, indeed, Wassabi-fied. He teamed up with Jean Dousset—the jewelry designer who's Louis Cartier's great-great-grandson—to create Lemire's ring. The one-of-a-kind design features a double hidden halo, a hidden diamond underneath the center stone, and a special engraving on the band. "Originally, I asked Jean if we could somehow incorporate a drop of my blood in the hidden diamond underneath, but that wasn't possible," Wassabi says. "So we settled on incorporating an X on the band to signify the X's in both of our names. It's simple but meaningful, and exactly what I envisioned."
Lemire shares the same opinion: "He could've proposed with a ring pop and I would've been happy, but man oh man, did he deliver," she says. "The amount of detail and thought he put behind it was so touching. It's a ring I'd love to pass down for generations to come."
For Wassabi, it was never a question of if he would propose, but when. The pair originally met through mutual friends at a Super Bowl party years before they became romantically involved. While the Twitch streamer says he was immediately smitten with Lemire, the timing for a relationship never quite worked out. "During those years, she was the one I always compared to anyone I went on a date with," Wassabi remembers. "She was the perfect partner in my mind, and I knew that if she ever gave me a chance, we would get married."
That premonition ultimately came true. "I pretty much knew I found 'the one' after our first date," he adds. "It was a perfect fit from the beginning. Our humor, goals and priorities matched, and she was the most beautiful girl I've ever met. Even after three years together, I'm still shocked she chose me."
Looking back, Lemire's favorite memory from the engagement is when her fiancé voiced these exact thoughts. "To see him be so vulnerable and speak from his heart was such a beautiful moment," she says. "Everyone in the room with us disappeared and it was just us. I think I blacked out for a bit, honestly. The main word that comes to mind is how special he made me feel. He is always putting in so much effort to show me how much he loves me and what I mean to him."
In fact, she says that getting engaged has already taken their relationship to new heights: "I feel like from that moment on, there was a new sense of closeness between us," she reflects. "There's a sense of knowing and wholeness I've never experienced before. I always knew it was him, but having that same sentiment returned in such a momentous way was a feeling I'll never forget."
Even though they've only been fiancés for a few weeks, they're already dreaming up what the rest of their lives will look like. "Our wedding day will be the official birthday of our new family," Wassabi says. "Finally marrying each other is the start of our little family. Hopefully soon after, we're able to grow our family even bigger."
