Debby Ryan and Josh Dun Reveal They Got Married on New Year's Eve

Debby Ryan and Josh Dun are married. And it's been that way for quite some time. The Insatiable actress and the Twenty One Pilots band member married on New Year's Eve, they revealed Thursday, May 21.

"We began to flirt with the idea of having a destination party celebrating the new decade," the former Disney Channel actress told Vogue. "Then [we] decided in December to get married on New Year's Eve, and just keep dancing until after the ball dropped."

The wedding was planned in just 28 days, said the actress, 27. They ended up exchanging vows in Austin with the help of event planner Alex Moreau of XO Moreau. "I'd met and had conversations for almost a year with a handful of the chicest recommended planners and teams from all over," the bride recalled. "They all seemed capable of throwing a beautiful wedding, but no one else put me into action like Alex."

Of course, one of their biggest tasks was narrowing down their choice of venue. "We didn't want the ceremony to be in a ballroom," Ryan said. "It became more and more important to us that the sanctity of the union exist in a reverent place. I think I saw every church in the greater Austin area and narrowed it down to two. Joshua chose the one we went with. The stained glass windows really got me."

The pair chose the Hotel Van Zandt for room blocks where their loved ones gathered all weekend. "We wanted it to feel like game night at our place had [turned into] a Gatsby-level dance party," said Ryan.

Ryan previously hinted at the nuptials by even sharing an image from her photobooth--without giving away the event itself. "Got all dressed up and closed out the decade with family and friends," she wrote at the time. "Little destination celebration party camp as an excuse to finally bring together our core folks from all corners of our worlds ⚡️we danced all night and had milk n cookies and I had the most fun of my life."

The reason for the whirlwind decision was the death of a close friend last summer. After getting engaged in December 2018 during a romantic trip, their wedding plans radically shifted with the life event. "He was excited that Joshua and I were getting married, and I never doubted that I'd know him through every coming phase of our lives," the Disney star explained. "When he passed, it really rocked me and put a lot of things in perspective. It didn't feel important to wait anymore, to stop being busy, or for things to line up perfectly—intending to do things is not nearly as powerful as doing, as we aren't promised tomorrow."

For the nuptials, Dun wore a velvet suit against Ryan's gown designed by Elie Saab--a satin, off-the-shoulder piece with a cinched bodice and an elaborate skirt. "The ceremony was the perfect balance," Dun explained. "I felt like it was game night at our house, and this was the ultimate game, and boy did I win! I remember every detail from how it felt to be walking down the aisle, to the full body chills I got watching Debby walk down toward me."

Ryan intentionally selected "local, female-owned small businesses" as part of her pro team. "I couldn't have been more delighted by Twyla at Remi+Gold. She got that I wasn't attracted to 'pretty,' and went straight for beautiful, while keeping it clean and cool," she said of her florist. "Her fluency in translating my obscure collection of style/vibe references into a floral medium was so impressive."

Dun proposed in a treehouse in New Zealand as he braced for tour with his band. "I said yes!" the Suite Life on Deck actress wrote previously. "Well technically I said 'NO WAY' twice but I meant yes."

"It ended up perfect," Dun recalled of positioning the photographer and videographer. "So many things had to fall perfectly into place, and they all did at the very last second. I couldn't have imagined the proposal working out any better."

"It was wild and perfect," Debby added. "I'm pretty nosey, but didn't suspect a thing."
