No matter where or how you propose to your very special someone, it's definitely going to be a moment you both remember for the rest of your lives. For a particularly dreamy knee drop, though, might we suggest setting up an ultra-romantic gazebo proposal? Picture the glow of twinkling lights or flickering candles, a plush pathway lined with flower petals or even sheer curtains billowing in the wind.

"There's something undeniably magical about a gazebo proposal," says event planner Cameron Forbes, founder of Forbes Functions based in East Hampton, New York. "Gazebos serve as intimate, picturesque settings. The open-air structure naturally frames the moment, creating a cozy, romantic atmosphere. It's as if the gazebo was made for that big 'yes!' moment."

How to Plan a Gazebo Proposal

Whether it's by a serene lake, in a blooming garden or under a starlit sky, a gazebo engagement proposal is the perfect backdrop for a moment you'll both treasure forever. Follow the steps below and make sure to check out our helpful proposal checklist so everything goes off without a hitch.

1. Reserve the Gazebo

If you're eyeing a popular park or venue, Forbes says to make sure to reserve the gazebo in advance. "Some public spaces may require permits, while private locations could have booking fees," she explains. "You don't want to arrive and find the spot already occupied, so planning ahead is essential."

2. Time it Right

Choose the day and the time you want to propose. This may be based on the reservation availability as well as your partner's schedule. From there, Forbes recommends aiming for a beautiful time of day.

"Golden hour, the hour just before sunset, is ideal for capturing soft, romantic light in your photos," she says. "Sunrise proposals are equally magical, offering the bonus of fewer crowds if you're in a public space."

3. Hire the Right Vendors

Skilled vendors provide a helping hand to ensure things go smoothly on the day of your proposal. Check out The Knot Vendor Marketplace to find the best people for the job in your area.

"A photographer is a must—you'll want someone there to capture the moment from a distance, preserving that surprise element," Forbes says. "Consider a videographer as well, especially if you're planning to share the proposal with family or friends who can't be there." Depending on the scale of the proposal and your budget, you might also bring in a florist or event planner to decorate the gazebo for your proposal.

4. Coordinate Logistics

Come up with a game plan for discreetly getting your partner to the gazebo on the big day. This might look like planning an activity around the proposal to keep it a surprise (e.g. going on a romantic walk that happens to end at the gazebo) or enlisting a friend for some help. Ideally, your partner knows to look nice!

Also, relay timing and location information to all your vendors and any loved ones who plan to be there for the proposal. Forbes adds to be mindful of the weather, too. If you're proposing outdoors, have a backup plan just in case Mother Nature isn't on the same page.

5. Get the Gazebo Set Up for a Proposal

Finally, make sure that the gazebo is dressed for the occasion. This can be as simple as candles and lanterns scattered around the gazebo or as elaborate as a floral arch or other larger-scale decor to help set the stage.

Decorations for Your Gazebo Proposal

Decorating the gazebo can transform the setting from simple to stunning. We asked Forbes for a few proposal decoration ideas to get you started.

String Lights

For an enchanting and romantic glow, Forbes suggests stringing fairy or bistro lights across the gazebo's beams or ceiling. "Opt for battery-powered ones to avoid tripping over cords, especially in outdoor settings," she says. This also eliminates the need for a power source.

Candles and Lanterns

Another option for lighting is candles or lanterns. This is especially important if you're planning an evening proposal and want to make sure to create enough light. "Scatter candles or lanterns around the gazebo for a romantic, candlelit ambiance," Forbes says. "I recommend LED flameless candles for any wooden gazebos or in case of inclement weather. They're windproof and provide that flickering glow without the fire hazard."

Floral Arrangements

Fresh flowers make any proposal instantly more romantic. "Drape greenery and fresh flowers around the entrance and along the railing," Forbes suggests. "Think roses, peonies or even wildflowers for a more rustic feel."

Personal Mementos

To help the gazebo proposal feel more intimate and personalized, add a few items that reflect your relationship. "Photos, meaningful mementos or a custom sign with your partner's name or initials can make the moment even more special," Forbes says.

Will You Marry Me? Signage

Another option is to incorporate signage that reads "Will You Marry Me?" on it. This might be an LED or neon light fixture, a banner strung up across the gazebo or a wood sign with the words painted in a handwritten font. Consider the location and the vibe you're going for and choose your gazebo decorations for your proposal accordingly.
