When Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on June 25, 2021, the celebrated couple made it clear to fans and followers that their romance is still going strong. The Australian actress shared a racy, PDA-laden pic to social media to commemorate her marriage, which as received by mixed reactions. (In it, only part of her face and neck are showing, and the country music star is pictured licking her neck). The celebrity couple's undeniable heat has only grown stronger over the years, a true feat in Hollywood's oft-blink-and-you-miss-it relationship culture. But it hasn't always been sunshine and rainbows for the stunning A-listers. A big part of the reason why their relationship is so solid, Kidman has said, is because they always make time for each other despite their busy schedules, even in tough times.

"Obviously I work hard, but when I'm off, I'm off," she told Harper's Bazaar in 2018. "Keith and I are very good at immediately clicking off because we have a really good life in Nashville that's very simple, quiet, and nourishing because we've made it like that." Below, we take a look back at the pair's dreamy love story and how they've grown and evolved into the still-strong couple they are today.

All About Nicole Kidman's Wedding to Keith Urban

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman are, for all their red carpet glamour, a remarkably private couple. The pair got married in Kidman's native Australia on June 25, 2006, in a romantic wedding ceremony attended by some of Hollywood and country music's biggest and brightest. Though not much is known in terms of details of their ceremony, what is known is that the couple's big day was the start of something really special.

They got hitched in Australia.

Kidman and Urban are both renowned Australians, so it only makes sense that they chose to marry back home. (Technically speaking, the country singer was born in New Zealand, but he holds citizenships in both Australia and the United States.) The pair wed in Manly, a suburb of Sydney, at the Cardinal Cerretti Chapel. The event was described as a traditional Catholic style wedding. People shared that the ceremony was lit entirely by candlelight, and a guest previously told the publication, "It was the most emotional and beautiful ceremony."

The Big Little Lies star's wedding dress was regal.

Photos from the couple's wedding day reveal that Kidman wore a dress of epic proportions. According to Hello! magazine, the bride's dress was Balenciaga, designed by Nicolas Ghesquière. It featured a statement puff sleeve with ruffles on one shoulder and a modest sweetheart neckline that accentuated Kidman's décolleté. Kidman also donned a classic veil, paired with Hollywood glam makeup and carefully-coiffed ringlets.

Their guest list was an impressive who's who of Hollywood.

Unsurprisingly, Urban and Kidman's guest list was filled with many of their A-list pals. Their besties included fellow Australians/New Zealanders Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, as well as Kidman's close friend Naomi Watts. The groom, Jackman and Crowded Hour singer Neil Finn all performed that evening, adding a personal touch to an already-intimate wedding. Reports stated that the pair hosted a total of around 230 of their closest family and friends. Kidman's two adopted children with ex-husband Tom Cruise, Isabella and Connor, were also in attendance.

The couple had a charity registry.

What do you get the couple who has it all? According to People, the newlyweds asked guests to ditch physical presents and instead requested donations to Sydney Children's Hospital. Other celebrity couples have similarly set up charity wedding registries in the years since, including Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in 2018 and before that, Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge raised an impressive $1 million with their efforts, which they then divided amongst 26 organizations. (Charity registries have also been a popular trend among non-celebrity couples in recent years, with folks raising funds for everything from wildlife conservation to hurricane relief.)

Kidman got ready at her home in Sydney's Darling Point with both Isabella and Connor (Bella was her bridesmaid). The bride then got into a white Rolls Royce with her father to drive to Manley, while Bella and Kidman's sister Antonia, her maid of honor, rode ahead of them in a matching white Rolls Royce. "Nicole cried all the way to the church in the car and then she cried all during the ceremony and had to wipe her eyes under the veil," a guest told People at the time.

The Couple's Relationship Timeline

Though Kidman and Urban's relationship may seem like kismet, the pair have frequently spoken about how they both work very hard at their relationship. And in fact, Kidman told Today in 2021 that she and her husband Keith Urban are happiest being the best version of themselves for each other and not for anyone else. "We don't want to be a pin-up couple," she said. "We just want to be a couple that has a great life together."

How did they meet?

The pair met at the G'Day USA Gala in 2005, where it wasn't exactly love at first sight—or so they both thought. "I remember thinking I had such a crush on him, and he wasn't interested in me," Kidman told Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2017. "He didn't call me for four months." When the talk show host reasoned that perhaps the country singer was just shy, Kidman admitted she never asked Urban what took him so long to get in touch. "There's certain things in a marriage ... We're here now, and it's all good," she said. "We don't need to hash up all that stuff."

Urban, for his part, told Oprah Winfrey on The Oprah Winfrey Show that he knew there was something special about Kidman from the moment they met. "I swear to you, she glided across the room, floated," he said. "I don't know how she did it. It was out of this world and there was a split moment where she wasn't with anybody, and I thought, 'I'll just go up and say hi.'" The rest, as they say, is history.

How long did they date?

The couple began dating shortly after that fateful phone call, and were quickly heralded as Hollywood's newest A-list couple. It wasn't until Kidman's 28th birthday in 2006, though, that the actress knew for sure that Urban was the one. The Nine Perfect Strangers star told People that the singer surprised her on her birthday by standing on her stoop in New York City at 4 a.m. holding a bouquet of gardenias. "That is when I went, 'This is the man I hope I get to marry.'" By the time the two made a trip up to Woodstock in upstate New York, she already knew "he was the love of [her] life."

When did they get engaged?

As it turns out, that early morning stoop visit was also the site of Urban's proposal. In a September 2021 interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Kidman revealed that she was "a goner" when she saw Urban sitting on her stoop with flowers in hand. "I'm like, 'Yes I'll marry you!'" she said. Kidman's engagement ring was considered unusual at the time, a $50,000 Cartier diamond that featured three large diamonds encircled by a series of smaller diamonds. The actress would later upgrade her ring to a considerably larger, emerald-cut diamond ring.

When did they get married?

Kidman and Urban exchanged vows before their family and friends on June 25, 2006. The couple held the traditional Catholic wedding at Australia's Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel, located in Manly, a suburb of Sydney. A guest told People that the moment Urban saw Kidman in her wedding dress for the first time was "so intense." Kidman kept her veil on for the entire ceremony until they were pronounced husband and wife. "When her veil was lifted, he moved right in and he grabbed her and kissed her," the source said. "It was a long, passionate kiss… They are so deeply in love. It was the most incredible wedding."

After the Wedding

The Monday after the wedding, the pair boarded Kidman's private jet for their honeymoon. The newlyweds otherwise kept a low profile following their nuptials. Just a few months after the occasion, they faced their first big challenge together: Kidman had to stage an intervention for Urban, who went into in-patient rehab for addiction. The country singer would later tell Rolling Stone in 2016 that if it wasn't for his wife, he wouldn't be where he is today.

"I caused the implosion of my fresh marriage. It survived, but it's a miracle it did," he said, adding, "For the first time in my life, I could shake off the shackles of addiction." In December 2021, Urban told Reba McEntire that he considered his marriage to Kidman to be his "biggest accomplishment" to date. "There's a lot of things. Marrying the right person? Massive," Urban shared. "Marrying for the right reasons, getting sober 15 years ago [was] a big turning point in my life."

Kidman has similarly spoken out about how Urban's unwavering support has helped her get through dark times. In 2016, she told CBS Sunday Morning that Urban was her guiding light following her father's death in 2014. "I called him screaming and crying," Kidman said at the time. "And he was about to go on stage. And he walked off stage and he got on a plane. He had just gotten there. He flew six hours, and he was right back there. And he literally picked me up and carried, pretty much carried me, through the next two weeks. And that to me, that's a marriage, and that's love. And I'm so grateful to have that."

The couple share two daughters. Their eldest girl, Sunday Rose, was born in July 2008, and Faith Margaret followed in December 2010.
