How David and Victoria Beckham Met
So, how did Posh and Becks come to be? This iconic love story began in 1997, when David and Victoria Beckham met at a Manchester United soccer game. Their first encounter was brief, and David recalled to W Magazine that he was too timid to make a move on the Spice Girl. "I'm quite shy. I just sort of waved from the other side of the bar," he told the outlet. "I sort of said hello and then just went back to Manchester. I was quite upset and gutted."
He wasn't sad for long. Two weeks later, they ran into each other at another soccer game, and David worked up the courage to ask Victoria for her phone number—and she happily wrote it down on a train ticket in her purse. The best part? David still has that memento to this day. In a poignant letter she penned to her younger self for Vogue UK in 2016, the fashion icon seemingly confirmed their spark was instant. "Love at first sight does exist," she wrote.
See Victoria Beckham's 15 Engagement Rings from David
In January 1998, David and Victoria Beckham announced their engagement by hosting a press conference at a hotel in Cheshire, England. The bride-to-be proudly showed off her engagement ring, but it would be the first of many, many more. So, how many engagement rings does Victoria Beckham have? Look back on all 15 of her rings here.
1998: The Marquise-Cut Diamond
It was the ring that started it all. In 1998, David Beckham and Victoria Adams announced that they were engaged and planning a wedding for the following year. In a press conference outside their hotel, the couple showed off Victoria Beckham's engagement ring. The pop star's original sparkler was a 6-carat marquise-cut diamond on a gold band by Boodle & Dunthorne. At the time, this ring was valued at $85,000.
2001: The Eternity Band
Two years after tying the knot, Posh Spice upgraded her OG rock to an eternity band lined with white diamonds. She debuted this second engagement ring at a book signing for her autobiography, Learning to Fly.
2003: The Emerald-Cut Diamond with Side Stones
David and Victoria Beckham made a dazzling appearance at the MTV Movie Awards in May 2003, in part thanks to the new gem Posh was wearing. She was photographed on the red carpet with a massive emerald-cut engagement ring flanked by baguette side stones.
2004: The Pink Oval-Cut Diamond
How's this for a birthday present? It was reported that David Beckham gifted his wife a brand new engagement ring for her 30th birthday in 2004. At an event that year, she was seen wearing a pink oval-cut diamond set within a diamond halo on a sparkly pavé band. According to Vogue, the ring was worth about $1.1 million.
2005: The Pear-Cut Diamond
The following year, Victoria Beckham debuted another engagement ring. As she arrived at The David Beckham Academy launch party in June 2005, she was seen wearing a jaw-dropping 17-carat pear-cut ring on a pavé band.
2006: The Yellow Emerald-Cut Diamond
Victoria Beckham took her game-day apparel up a notch in 2006, when she was photographed wearing a new engagement ring to her husband's soccer match. This time, it was a yellow emerald-cut diamond on a pavé band, which she paired in between two matching eternity bands for an even bigger look.
2007: The Cushion-Cut Emerald
Victoria Beckham's engagement ring collection doesn't only include diamonds. In 2007, she ventured into the world of gemstones by wearing a cushion-cut emerald ring set within a halo of dainty diamonds.
2008: The Emerald-Cut Diamond
If one thing's certain, it's that Victoria Beckham loves emerald-cut diamonds. In 2008, she revamped her ring stack again with a stunning emerald-cut diamond set on a pavé band, one of her go-to looks.
2009: The Oval-Cut Ruby
The Met Gala is a perfect setting to debut a new engagement ring, which Victoria Beckham did in 2009. As she walked up the steps of the famed museum, she flashed a striking oval-cut ruby ring set within a halo of white-gold diamonds.
2009: The Oval-Cut Sapphire
That same year, the fashion designer swapped her red ruby for a deep blue sapphire. She first debuted this oval-cut engagement ring at the end of the year and would continue to wear it throughout 2010.
2015: The Second Pink Oval-Cut Diamond
Although a bit more subdued than some other baubles in her jewelry box, this Victoria Beckham engagement ring is just as beautiful as the rest. She was photographed wearing a brand new pink oval-cut diamond—and unlike her first one on this list, which had a white-gold band, this one featured a yellow-gold setting.
2015: The Round-Cut Diamond with Side Stones
Perhaps one of the rarest engagement rings worn by Victoria Beckham is this round-cut diamond flanked by round side stones, all set within diamond halos. Despite its grandeur, Posh Spice has only worn this engagement ring a few times.
2015: The Moonstone Gem
One of Victoria Beckham's most unique engagement rings is this moonstone gem set within a halo of diamonds on a gold band. She first wore this milky, avant-garde style at the 2015 CFDA Fashion Awards in June
2016: The Square-Cut Diamond
While walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016, Victoria Beckham's new engagement ring—a stunning square-cut diamond on a chunky diamond band—was on full display.
2018: The Yellow Square-Cut Diamond
Finally, Victoria Beckham's most recent engagement ring (that we know of!) is a yellow square-cut diamond on a pavé band. She first sported this colorful sparkler at fashion week events in Paris and New York in 2018.
Inside David and Victoria Beckham's Wedding Day
If Victoria's taste in engagement rings is any indication, the couple's wedding day was just as grand as you'd expect. David and Victoria Beckham got married on July 4, 1999, at Luttrellstown Castle in Dublin, Ireland. They began their destination wedding by hosting a vow ceremony at a nearby chapel in front of just 29 guests, including Victoria's Spice Girl bandmates and David's Manchester United and England teammates. That small group was later joined by 230 additional loved ones for the reception at the 15th-century palace.
Inspired by Disney's Robin Hood, the bride wore a strapless Vera Wang ball gown with a corset top and full skirt. She also carried a bouquet of vines, twigs and apples, leaning into the woodland theme. For the reception, the bride and groom both changed into purple ensembles: a fitted one-shoulder dress for her, and a matching suit for him.
One of the most lavish elements of David and Victoria Beckham's wedding was their towering cake, which they sliced with a saber. The creative dessert, made by British artist and sculptor Damien Hirst, featured alternating layers of fruit and chocolate cakes and was adorned in gold leaf foiling for a hint of shimmer, along with the phrase "Victoria & David" written on the cake in diamonds. In other words, it was easily the poshest celebrity wedding cake of all time. What else would you expect from David and Victoria Beckham?
