A Brief History of Wedding Dress Designer Vatana Watters

Vatana Watters first moved to the United States from Thailand as a child and decided to take fashion matters into her own hands in the '80s when she couldn't find gowns that didn't just feel typical and boring. Instead of designing dresses for just herself  and friends to get away from the "cookie cutter style," Watters started selling bridesmaid dresses after moving to Dallas, TX. Her fresh gowns stood out because they toned down the late 80s' aesthetic of completely over-the-top frills. More than thirty years later, the Watters' vision has morphed into a powerhouse bridal brand that she runs with her daughter, Sydney Dunbar Watters, as the style director.

Wtoo by Watters Collection History

It's been 37 years since Vatana Watters first began designing bridesmaid dresses before expanding into bridal. Since then, the Watters' empire has grown into four brands within its portfolio: Watters, Wtoo by Watters, Willowby by Watters, and By Watters. Headquartered and designed in Dallas, TX, the woman-owned bridal brand offers special occasion, bridesmaid, and wedding gowns. In addition to shopping online directly from the newly revamped website or in bridal boutiques across the world, brides can check out exclusive styles available through BHLDN and Nordstrom.

In 2017, Vatana Watters' daughter, Sydney Watters Dunbar, joined her mom's company as Style Director and has since focused on making the brand more millennial-focused to help streamline the process for brides-to-be with the By Watters line. "Wedding day shopping can be daunting for some, so we are thrilled to offer our Watters girls a stress-free experience," Watters Dunbar shared in a press release.

Other Watters Labels

In addition to Wtoo by Watters, Vatana Watters is behind multiple beloved labels, allowing her to serve diverse brides across different price points, body types, and aesthetics. Wtoo By Watters gowns offer brides relaxed gowns with a contemporary edge while the Watters label is filled with dreamy wedding dresses that are both luxurious and raw yet refined. Willowby speaks to the free-spirited bride with airy design elements and a natural feel that exude ease and boho-chic.

Watters' newest label, By Watters, was unveiled in 2019 as an exciting collection of ready-to-wear gowns starting at $250. This label is both budget-conscious and e-commerce focused, and simplifies the process for brides by allowing them to shop newly released styles throughout the year and order them directly from By Watters online.

Fun Facts about Wtoo by Watters

Not only has Vatana Watters succeeded in spearheading a woman-run luxury bridal empire, she's managed to keep it in the family by working with her daughter Sydney. For inspiration, the pair draw from their extensive travels around the world. This speaks to one Watters bride, Zoe Aust, who went viral in 2019 for wearing her Watters gown in 33 countries throughout a year-long honeymoon after her New Jersey wedding. "Who says I can only wear this dress for one day? Why can't I bring the dress that makes me feel the most beautiful to the most beautiful places around the world with us?" Aust wrote on Instagram.
