Picture this: You and your partner are having your photo taken against a background of stunning autumn foliage while wearing fall engagement photo outfits that perfectly compliment your setting.

Now that we've set the scene, you might be convinced that fall is the ideal time to take engagement photos (cough, it is). The season is known for its romantic venues (from beautiful apple orchards to whimsical pampas fields), but its climate and overall ambiance are definitely in your favor as well. "When I think of fall, I think of pumpkin spice and cozy blankets, giving fall engagement sessions that warm, fuzzy feeling. The leaves are changing and the golden light coming through the trees makes photos look special," says wedding photographer Hana Gonzalez.

Many couples choose to celebrate their engagement with a formal photo shoot done by a professional photographer. "It's a great opportunity for couples to get to know their wedding photographer, practice posing and get comfortable in front of the camera, but also dress up and see what their hair and makeup may look like in photos," adds Gonzalez. Additionally, your engagement photos can be repurposed on other formats, including for your wedding website, save-the-dates and wedding guest book.

Along with choosing a season and venue to host your engagement photo session, your attire is an equally significant part of the equation. Below, we're breaking down fall engagement photo outfits, including what to wear and the best colors for the season. Then, we're sharing our favorite fall outfit ideas for couples to shop on the spot.

What to Wear for Fall Engagement Photos, According to Experts

As you start to plan your outfits, keep in mind the venue, location and climate. Because autumn days can be chilly or warm, consider bringing layers to your session just in case. Think ahead about the vibe you and your partner want, whether that's casual, formal or somewhere in between. Coordinating your outfits will ensure your photos look cohesive and effortless, and Gonzalez suggests teaming up with a stylist (if it's in your budget) who can help choose outfits that will compliment you and your partner.

"I always recommend dressing in light layers with some texture to the fabric," says wedding photographer Ashley Gerrity. "Avoid busy patterns, blending in with the background and getting too 'matchy-matchy' with your fiance. You want your looks to coordinate without looking too similar. And don't forget to accessorize—think of a playful scarf, bold earrings or a fun hat!"

Selecting your colors is another factor to consider while planning your fall engagement photo outfits. Generally, fall is known for darker hues, deep jewel tones and wine-inspired shades. "If you're embracing the autumn ambiance, I'm a big fan of deeply hued burgundies and warm earth tones," adds Gerrity. But ultimately, the choice of what colors to wear is completely yours. "It really depends on your style and the vibe of your wedding," says Gonzalez. "If you are looking for classic bright photos, you can choose lighter colors. If you are hoping for a modern darker look, you can go with deeper colors for more contrast."

Ultimately, experts say to have fun and make the most of your session. "One of the best ways to prepare for an engagement session is to treat it like a date night and have fun with it," suggests Gonzalez. "Picking a favorite location or activity will take the stress away, and couples can enjoy getting their pictures taken."

Fall Engagement Photo Outfits You Can Shop or Copy

If You Want a Classic Vibe...

You truly can't go wrong with the classics, especially when it comes to photos you're going to cherish for years to come. For timeless elegance, opt for simple, understated outfits featuring elevated basics. A collared shirt and a pair of plaid pants, for instance, is one look that's guaranteed to stand the test of time. You can make it more seasonally appropriate by opting for knit fabrics and warm-tones. Likewise, a streamlined satin skirt is always in style. Pair it with a flattering square-neck bodysuit and finish off your look with autumnal accessories like suede boots and an emerald necklace.

If You Want a Cozy Vibe...

When it comes to your engagement photo shoot, you make the rules, and that might mean keeping things casual. After all, you want your photos to reflect who you are as a couple. Jeans and a flannel is a classic combo in our books, especially during the fall. To avoid clashing, however, we recommend not wearing matching shirts with your partner. Instead, one of you can rock a flannel, while the other matches their outfit to the colors within the plaid.

If You Want a Gilmore Girls Kind of Vibe...

Maybe you're planning on taking photos in your hometown this fall. If so, bring on the Gilmore Girls vibes! Nothing says 'fall' quite like the sitcom's iconic wardrobe of cozy cable knit sweaters, vintage Levi's jeans and classic Chuck Taylors. Whether you choose to channel your inner Lorelei with a pair of low-rise jeans and a leather jacket, or your inner Luke with a laidback flannel and backwards baseball cap, we're sure you'll love this aesthetic for your fall engagement photo shoot. Bonus points if you can find a gazebo to take pics under.

If You Want a Dressy Vibe...

Your engagement shoot is as good a reason as any to get all dressed up. After all, it's not every day you get your photo taken. Semi-formal attire is the way to go if your session is taking place at a hotel, estate or museum. The best part is that there are plenty of ways to add an autumn touch to your attire. For suits and dresses, opt for rich, warm hues, like burnt orange or maroon. Of course, black is another great choice no matter the season. Don't forget to accessorize with a seasonal-printed pocket square or bold jewelry.

If You Want a Coastal Vibe...

The weather might be cooling down, but that doesn't have to stop you from heading to the coast for your engagement photo shoot. A picnic on the sand is a photo-op waiting to happen, and you can make it seasonal by adding a bouquet of pampas grass to your setup. Of course, you'll need a laidback look to fit the vibe. For the fall, you can't go wrong with warm tones. Pair them with long-sleeved linens for a cool, California look you're sure to love.
