The Tiki Suite

This sounds like something out of a children's book, but it's very real and very bookable. Perfect for one couple, you can spend the day in the warm Florida sun paddleboarding, snorkeling or just relaxing in the hammock. Waking up on a king-size bed that's essentially in the ocean must be one of the most amazing feelings ever. Plus, you don't need an alarm clock when you have dolphins swimming next to your window.

Notable Review: "We had an amazing experience at this Airbnb place. The view was simply wonderful, and the ambiance was beautiful. I spent a super special time with my partner; everything was lovely, and we loved our stay. We will definitely come back in the future! Just be careful with jellyfish."

Notable Review: "I had an amazing time in the windmill. Just no words. I really, really loved it and I really, really recommend it! It felt like I was on a honeymoon trip haha. Worth every penny."

If you're a fan of all things J.R.R. Tolkien, then you've found your next vacation spot. With its use of sustainable, natural materials and sheep on the property, you will truly feel like you are in a hobbit fairytale. (Don't worry, the bed is human-sized.) Just a quick 10-minute walk to the beach, the island is also easily accessible by ferry.

Notable Review: "We had our elopement here at the cob. Everything was like a fairytale. Alexis and Manny were very fast at responding to my messages before and during our stay if I had any questions. Special thanks to Manny to arrange time to be our witness and sheep be our guests. We're so happy with our stay."

Located on a farm, the car has a cozy bed and bathroom. You can enjoy a fire pit, some games and beautiful Kansas sunsets.

Notable Review: "We absolutely love the boxcar! It was absolutely so beautiful and peaceful. Amy's description was spot on and very detailed! We loved all the special touches and the atmosphere. Perfect for a group of four, you'll be busy with nearby hikes, fishing and those glorious mountain views. But you'll also love just hanging out in this unique property with its beautiful beams, barrel furniture, domed ceilings and repurposed wood stove. The cactus art on the property is also especially enticing.

Notable Review: "It's hard to sum into words how special the time spent on Tom and Estie's property truly was… it's an experience that has to be experienced to be understood. It was very restorative for our bodies, minds and souls. The detail that went into every inch of the silo is AMAZING!! A lot of thought and love went into the creation of that space and everywhere on their property. Very much appreciate Tom and Estie for sharing their piece of heaven :)."

The Kyoob Cabin at Shash Dine, Page, Arizona

Living space
Photo: Airbnb

You have to see this one to believe it. A true architectural gem, this small cabin in the shape of a cube is located on a working sheep ranch in the middle of the Arizona desert. Imagine being wrapped up in a beautiful Pendleton blanket while you watch the sunrise and feel that absolute sense of calmness. Though the location is isolated, you are within short driving distance of Page, Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon. The Grand Canyon is only two hours away, making for a perfect day excursion. This will definitely be a glamping experience (with separate showers and an outhouse on the property), but the bedding is super cozy for those cold desert nights—plus you will have a story to tell for years.

Notable Review: "Absolutely stunning! Baya was great; greeted us upon check-in, talked us through the property and gave great dinner suggestions. The land is gorgeous; we stayed in the cube, it was gorgeous. It was great to be able to disconnect for a night. The bed and bedding were phenomenal."

Jungle Loft, Tulum, Mexico

Lounge area
Photo: Airbnb

Another great spot for a group of couples, this beautiful loft provides a vacation oasis. Located in the lovely neighborhood of La Veleta, you'll feel removed from the noisier side of Tulum but still close enough that you can get there easily. With a hot tub, an expansive terrace and a nearby yoga studio, this will definitely be a memorable trip.

Notable Review: "The most stunning and breathtaking Airbnb I've ever stayed at. Incredibly comfortable beds. Every detail was thought through. Wonderful aesthetic and vibe with candles and incense. Worth every penny. My future dream home."

Seashell Unicorn House, Austin, Texas

Lounge area
Photo: Airbnb

Shaped like a giant seashell unicorn—yes, you read that right—this is a house that embraces magic and whimsy. Designed in the 1970s (obviously) by two imaginative University of Texas architects, the extraordinary house sat on the market for years. Finally, in 2017, it was bought and restored, and now has become one of the coolest Airbnbs ever. It's the perfect spot for two couples.

Notable Review: "I recently had the pleasure of staying at The Bloomhouse in West Austin, and I must say it was truly a fairytale escape like no other. The entire experience was magical, whimsical and utterly unforgettable. Staying inside a giant seashell unicorn is a bucket list item you didn't even know you had until now. Its history is equally captivating. Crafted by two visionary UT architecture students in the '70s, it embodies harmony with nature, a retreat from the modern world. For years, it was so secluded that it had no physical address, a true hidden gem. If you're looking for an experience that's truly out of this world, I highly recommend a stay at this mystical and magical Airbnb. This place leaves a mark on your soul. It's a rare gem that reminds us of the beauty and wonder that can be found in the most unexpected places."

The Most Unique VRBO Stays

Dome Oasis Near Joshua Tree, Landers, California

Birds eye view of the property
Photo: Vrbo

Staying in a dome house is something to put on your bucket list. Located only 50 minutes from the Palm Springs Airport, this is a great house for a group as big as eight. Lounge by the pool, take a swing on the hammock, relax in the hot tub and do some yoga on the shaded platform. In other words, this will be a very relaxing and fun vacation. There's a reason it's called the Serenity Dome House.

Notable Review: "This home is a truly magical spot in the desert. It was a perfect home for my getaway retreat weekend with close friends. The dome building is a perfect setting to gather for meals, meditation, yoga, etc. The rooms therein are beautiful and spacious. The trailer rooms are cute and cozy and their nearby "Outhouse'' is a luxurious full bathroom. The grounds include various places for relaxing and socializing: pool, hot tub, deck, fire pit, hammock tree, etc. Communication with the owner was quick and precise. Check in and out were simple as could be. One bit of advice: this is not a party house. The outdoor stereo will shut off at 9 p.m. and the neighborhood expects relative quiet after that time. If you're looking for a place for a big late party (we were not, this is not a complaint), this isn't the place for you. But if you're looking for a place of self-reflection and connection with your loved ones around a peaceful fire pit or hot tub under the desert stars, this place is a treasure."

Private Island, Placencia, Belize

Ariel view of property
Photo: Vrbo

There is hotel room-private, remote rented house-private, and then there is your own private island-private. Yes, you and a bunch of friends (the house sleeps 14) can actually rent your own island on the coast of Belize with the most pristine of beaches. You'll have a beautiful five-bedroom suite house, and the staff of Little Harvest Caye have their own separate accommodations. All of your meals will be prepared by a chef, and you'll have a boat with a captain ready to take you out every day, whether that's for a beautiful ride, a diving trip or an excursion in Placencia VIllage. This is a fantasy you could make a reality.

Notable Review: "This was the best trip. We all were in agreement on the staff and the way they took care of us. Whatever we needed they provided. Everyone was so welcoming and kind we can't help but love them. The island was always spotless and the sand raked. The food WAS amazing!!"

Funky 70s Themed Lakefront House, Lola, Wisconsin

70s style living room
Photo: Vrbo

It's gonna be a groovy vacation at this refurbished lakehouse that has been featured in The Washington Post. Built in 1975, it has modern amenities with a fun, 70s-themed vibe, including a bright orange Preway fireplace, a friendly hand chair, potted plants and some perfectly placed crocheted afghans. You're on a lake with your own dock if you want to rent a boat. You're also right near thriving downtown Lola. Fire up that fondue pot and put on Fleetwood Mac.

Notable Review: "My daughter found this place while searching for a fun family and friend weekend. We were not disappointed! The home is a modern update of the 70s, complete with crocheted afghans, record players, Etch-A-Sketch, an Atari game, unlimited board games from my childhood, excellent fishing (my husband caught several northern, crappies and many perch right from the kayak!), bikes, badminton, fire pit, paddle boat and endless other amenities. The open concept with the loft area, decor, and a few modern amenities (TV and DVD player with Brady Bunch, Mork and Mindy, All in The Family, etc. box sets), along with a great screen porch and close proximity to great restaurants, made this place so memorable for our family! The hosts were very responsive and offered several local recommendations for activities. Thank you!!"

Airplane Jungle Fuselage Rental, Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica

You may not love sleeping on a plane when you're traveling, but what about sleeping on a plane in the jungle? This unique VRBO rental is an actual 727 fuselage converted into a home. You will be 15 meters off the ground and feel like you're part of the vibrant jungle. Howler monkeys will be your neighbors, and may even stop by for a morning coffee. Perfect for a couple, this plane is much more spacious than a regular plane, with two queen-size beds. If the 727 is booked, you can always try for the repurposed Cockpit Cottage, which has a hot tub.

Notable Review: "Loved the plane. Very private. A/C worked really good! Saw monkeys and a sloth from our balcony. Great location. Highly recommend."

Game-Themed House, Clermont, Florida

Take game night to the next level with this super unique VRBO rental. You and up to 54 of your friends (does anyone even have that many friends?) can sleep here. You'll be having too much fun to argue over who gets which gamed-theme room—there is the Scrabble bedroom, the Twister bedroom, the Monopoly bedroom, the RISK bedroom and the Ms. Pac-Man bedroom, to name a few. This giant house includes a billiards-themed pool, two escape rooms, skeeball and a campfire pit.

Notable Review: "Amazing! Perfect place for family reunions, getaways or for a b-day trip with friends. Plenty to do around the house and the pool deck is so peaceful to just chill and grill out. Price is not bad if you split it up and it is a great place if you have kids or as an adult want to release your inner child and have fun. They were very accommodating and clearly communicated. Would highly recommend."

Beachfront Cottage, Ballybunion, Ireland

View of property
Photo: Vrbo

It may not have a crazy theme, but this spot is still quite exquisite. This tranquil cottage looks out on four miles of sandy beach on the Wild Atlantic Way, and it's perfect for a laid-back and relaxing trip with friends. It's a great location for golf enthusiasts, as some of Ireland's world-class golf courses are just a short ride away. There are also plenty of other attractions nearby, including Carrigafoyle Castle and Bromore Cliffs.

Notable Review: "This home to us for the last two weeks was the most AMAZING and gorgeous place to stay! Everything from our first contact with Dermot to the very last day was first class! Dermot was very quick to respond to our texts and recommended great places to visit. The house itself was also five stars!!! The home was very clean, updated and so very quiet. And the view... Heaven on earth! If you have the chance to visit Ireland this is the place to stay! Thank you Dermot!"

French Quarter Firehouse, New Orleans, Louisiana

Backyard view
Photo: Vrbo

New Orleans is already a spectacular city, and now you'll be staying at the coolest place in town. Perfect for a group of up to 14 people, this is actually a true bed-and-breakfast. Renovated in the 2000s, this place is perfect to come back to after a long, exciting day in the French Quarter. Be sure to book way in advance!

Notable Review: "We highly enjoyed our stay at the Firehouse. The space was perfect for a group of 13. Everyone had their own bathroom and there was plenty of common space for us to hang out. The neighborhood is very cute—a short (20-ish minute) walk to Bourbon Street if that's where you're headed. Overall, would stay here again!"

The Pole House Over the Ocean, Fairhaven, Australia

Living room area with ocean view
Photo: Vrbo

This house is a true architectural feat, as it's made mostly of glass and suspended in air over a dramatic coastline. You'll feel like you're on top of the ocean. Originally built by Frank Dixon, it was recently redesigned by Franco Fiorentini from F2 Architecture, making an already incredible wonder of design even more intriguing. Imagine watching the sunset here. Let's just say you'll be bragging about this spot for years at cocktail parties.

Notable Review: "We had the best two days at the Pole House! It was as good as all the reviews said it would be. The house is so iconic, so well appointed, so comfortable and when you take into account the spectacular views, it just is second to none. We'll be back!"

A Funky Whale House, Mission Canyon, California

Front entrance view
Photo: Vrbo

This is arguably one of the most unique VRBO stays in the world, as the 1978 house resembles a whale. The inner courtyard features a 75-foot lap pool, which then flows into the whale's tail (a.k.a. the guest house). Surrounded by lush trees, it sleeps six and is truly a design treasure, with grand wooden beams, stone walls, curved rooms and a painting of Moby Dick on the fridge. Plus, you can quickly get to Santa Barbara.

Notable Review: "The whale house was amazing! Our family, which included three kids, had a great time playing in the house! We had a great experience and made our trip to Santa Barbara even more memorable. The management company Paradise Retreats was awesome since we called about the pool not heating. They responded right away and came out to the house immediately. Shout out to John Wilkins for his great customer service. We would definitely come back again!!!!"

Jacobean Castle, Hartlepool, England

Ariel View of Castle
Photo: Vrbo

Live out all your Pride and Prejudice, Downton Abbey and The Crown fantasies right here at this incredible castle from the 1700s located in Hartlepool, England. Set on 17 acres, you can run around for hours on the beautifully kept grounds or take a lovely drive in the countryside before jumping in the hot tub. Did we mention you can bring 30 friends? One guest even had a murder mystery anniversary party here.

Notable Review: "We hired this venue to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary with friends and family. The castle is amazing, plenty of space to spread out and great facilities. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the local caretaker couldn't have been more helpful and responsive. The food hamper was a lovely touch and we all had an amazing stay."
