Popular Men's Wedding Band Styles
When trying on rings, one of the first things you'll notice is the profile or shape of the band. This will determine how the ring fits on your finger and can help guide your style choices. Blackmon always recommends trying on different shapes before purchasing, whether that's in-store or through Marke's convenient at-home try-on experience. "The home-try-on experience makes it easier for customers to see what styles and widths they like in a low-pressure and risk-free environment." Not sure what you're looking for? Let's go over some of the most sought-after men's wedding band styles:
- High Dome Wedding Band: Traditional with a classic fit, the high dome band is one of the most common and formal ring shapes. It's often referred to as a "D-shape" or "half-round" because the ring shank is flat on the inside and curved on the outside, giving it a high profile. It's perfect for those looking for something formal and traditional.
- Low Dome Wedding Band: One of the most popular profiles, the low dome features a similar D-shape curve. The main differences between a high dome and a low dome are thickness and shape. Low dome bands are lightweight and not as thick, making them the preferred choice for everyday wear.
- Flat Wedding Band: If you want something more modern, a flat wedding band will have that nontraditional look you are going for. As the name suggests, the band is flat on both the inside and outside shank, giving it a low-profile, defined edge and cylindrical shape.
Best Material for Men's Wedding Bands
When choosing your wedding band, it's important to find a metal that fits your lifestyle. Below, we've broken down some of the best materials for men's wedding bands that can help answer that question. Psst: You can also check out our comprehensive guide to ring metal types here for a deeper dive.
- Gold: The most popular precious metal, gold, is a classic choice. "There's been a recent shift in interest to yellow gold again over the last several years. People seem to have naturally gravitated towards it, which is very exciting," says Blackmon. Although naturally occurring as a yellow metal, gold can be plated or mixed with different alloys to create other shades. (White gold is actually rhodium-plated yellow gold, and rose gold is a blend of gold and copper.) It also comes in a range of purities, mostly ranging from 10K to 24K. Pure gold isn't always better though—24K is very soft and extremely prone to scratching. Aim for 14K or 18K gold to ensure your ring's longevity.
- Platinum: Platinum is one of the strongest and purest precious metals. It has a luxurious appearance and strong durability that will hold up well against wear and tear. It won't scratch or tarnish as easily as gold, for example, and it's also the rarest metal. While this means it will cost you more upfront, choosing a platinum men's wedding band could save you money in the long run, since you won't have to have it replated over time.
- Tungsten: Tungsten is the most durable ring material, and has become a popular seller for men and gender-neutral wedding bands. It's about 10 times harder than gold and is rated a nine on the Mohs scale of hardness (For reference: diamonds, the hardest naturally occurring substance found on earth, are a 10). "Tungsten is scratch-resistant, and is very hard to damage," says Blackmon. "It's what a lot of people prefer right now, especially if they have an active lifestyle or career."
- Silicone: "An up-and-coming trend we are seeing in the ring industry are couples opting for two bands: A precious metal one for everyday wear, and a silicone one for exercising, traveling, and working with your hands," Blackmond says. This is because silicone rings are made of a rubber material that is durable, comfortable, and safe. Not to mention, they are a fraction of the cost compared to other materials and are easier to replace.
Men's Wedding Band FAQs
Who buys the men's wedding band?
Traditionally, each partner buys the other's wedding band. However, times are changing. "We're seeing that trend start to disappear, and it's becoming more of a collaborative purchase that is done together as a fun bonding experience for couples," Blackmon says. Learn more about purchasing the wedding band in our guide here.
How much are men's wedding bands?
According to The Knot 2023 Jewelry and Engagement Study, the average cost of a men's wedding band is $600. Platinum rings, however, can cost thousands of dollars, while tungsten rings are available at a generally lower price point. Like many other wedding decisions, how much you spend on your rings is a personal choice.
What are men's "comfort fit" wedding bands?
If you've been shopping around for rings, you've probably encountered the term "comfort fit." As the name implies, this style is designed to feel more secure on the finger. "The comfort fit is slightly more curved on the interior, and the band is contoured to fit the shape of the finger," says Blackmon. These rings are made to easily slide on and off over the knuckles while still maintaining a firm fit for everyday wear.
