Consider a refined floral or botanical print dress," Sanchez says. "An uptown cosmopolitan party? Consider a cocktail dress with a luxe fabric." He advises to steer clear of anything that could read as too costumey.

The most important rule for mother-of-the-groom bridal shower dresses—apart from not wearing white—is to "not let your outfit compete with the bride-to-be," Sanchez says. "This is her moment." If you're on the fence about a specific dress, it doesn't hurt to send the bride a quick text and ask for her opinion.
