Six Months Before
This is the time to get all your ducks in a row, download bachelorette party planning apps and figure out the bachelorette party basics. Keep reading to learn what to-dos you have at the six-month mark.
1. Consult the Bride
Before you dive into planning, talk to the bride about the type of celebration she wants. Listen to her bachelorette party ideas about possible themes and destinations, and discuss timing along with a general list of who should attend. You should also talk about anything that's off the table—for example, she might want to skip the wild night of partying in favor of a chilled-out weekend instead. Start this conversation shortly after the couple finalizes their wedding date and has decided who's in the wedding party.
2. Finalize Guest List
Some brides choose to invite their mom or mother-in-law, or want to include someone who's not in the wedding but is otherwise a close friend. Most importantly, remember that if someone isn't invited to the wedding, they shouldn't be invited to the bachelorette party (or any other prewedding event). Once the bride lets you know who to invite to the bachelorette party, which is usually the maid of honor and bridesmaids plus some additional people, get the bride's final stamp of approval on the guest list before moving forward with any other party details.
3. Set Your Budget
Once you have your list of invitees, it's bachelorette party etiquette to get a sense of everyone's budget along with their availability and willingness to help plan the bachelorette party. We recommend sending out a Google form (or other survey) to gather everyone's thoughts in one place. Ask questions like, 'Would you be willing to spend money on travel and accommodations for the party?' or 'What's your maximum personal budget for the bachelorette party?'. Keep in mind that a doable budget will be different for everyone—and don't forget that they're probably budgeting for other prewedding costs too, such as attire, beauty treatments and a wedding gift. It may not be realistic for some people in your crew to put lots of money towards the bachelorette party cost, so try to find a compromise that feels comfortable for everyone. (Get more info on who pays for the bachelorette party here.)
4. Choose Date and Location
In your bach party survey, you can also include questions to find out where people would be willing to travel and propose a few potential party dates for when to have the bachelorette party. The sooner you do this, the better—you're more likely to find a time that works for everyone before their calendars fill up. Finalizing the location as early as possible is also important so that attendees can start planning and booking travel as needed.
Four to Six Months Before
Planning a bachelorette party doesn't have to be hard. Follow the four steps below to ensure this prewedding affair will be a success.
5. Pick a Theme
You might already have bachelorette party themes in mind, especially if the bride has a specific request, but the location and timing can inspire your decision as well. Most importantly, you should pick a theme that speaks to her personal style. If she loves all things glitter and dancing, a disco bachelorette theme is a perfect fit. Is she a lifelong Swiftie? Plan a Taylor Swift bachelorette party inspired by every era. The final concept and accompanying bachelorette outfit theme gives guests an idea of what to expect from the party, so making this choice early on in the planning process is key.
6. Send Invitations and Collect RSVPs
Even if you've already been in touch with most of the guests, it's important to send official bachelorette party invites and confirm who's attending. Allow more time for this if you're planning a destination bachelorette party so that you can get a final count before moving forward with travel-related logistics. (The Knot Invitations has fully customizable prewedding event invitations you can personalize to fit your bach party needs.)
7. Book Travel, Accommodations and Activities
Want to know how to plan a bachelorette trip? Once you've confirmed your guest count and RSVPs, it's time to finalize the major details such as flights, hotels and activities. Even if you're staying local, we recommend getting the logistics out of the way, especially if you're hoping to score a reservation at a popular downtown restaurant or book a private tasting room at a nearby winery.
8. Hire Vendors
For those interested in hiring pros for the party, this is the time to do so. Whether you want to book a private chef, magician or decorator, do plenty of research on who are the best people in your bachelorette party destination. Go to The Knot Vendor Marketplace and click on whichever vendor category you need and use the filters to narrow down your search.
Two Months Before
Once the heavy-hitting to-dos have been taken care of, give yourself a pat on the back. Now, you can focus on the following bachelorette party planning duties.
9. Delegate Important Tasks
Wondering how to organize a bachelorette party? Well, the maid of honor, who's typically in charge of planning, shouldn't be the only person organizing the entire celebration. Instead, this is the time for the host to assign jobs to the wedding party members or any partygoers who are willing to help. If you don't want to tell people what to do, we suggest putting a list of tasks (and when they should be done) in a spreadsheet, asking helpers to add their name next to one or two duties by a determined deadline and ensuring everyone sticks to those responsibilities.
10. Purchase Decor, Games and Favors
With the major details taken care of, you can turn your attention to things like bachelorette party favors, games, decor and party swag. Decorative banners, customized drink cups, photo props and hangover recovery kits are just a few popular bachelorette party supplies people buy. You might not have a ton of downtime during the party, but we recommend having at least one or two bachelorette party games on hand as icebreakers. And even though games aren't required, consider getting some bachelorette game prizes to bring out everyone's competitive side.
One Month Before
It's almost time for the bachelorette party of the bride's dreams. Complete the two important logistical tasks below so everything goes smoothly.
11. Arrange Group Meals
If you have plans of eating out with your group, this is the time to make restaurant reservations (at places where you don't need to book months in advance). Depending on your group's size, you might have to pay a deposit to book the reservation and/or an automatic gratuity of 20% will be added to the bill. With that being the case, ensure you talk with the staff at the restaurant to see what their rules are for large groups. If you want to have a set price for the dining experience, ask if your desired eatery has prix fixe menus.
You should also organize how the check will be paid ahead of time. There are two ways you can go about this. The group can have one person pay for the bill, which makes it easier for the server, and everyone gives money to that person for their portion of their food, drinks, tax and tip. (You'll have to take a picture of the receipt for this option.) Or everyone can put money down for the bill. With this option, always figure out the bill amongst yourselves and note that many restaurants have a limit on how many ways they'll split the bill. For example, one restaurant may allow the check to be split four ways, while another only allows two.
12. Confirm and Share Itinerary
In the home stretch leading up to the party, ensure everyone knows the bachelorette party itinerary and is aware of where and when to arrive. Send an itinerary along with other important info, such as the hotel or rental home address, transportation details and if there's anything specific that guests need to pack. If you haven't already started a group chat, create one so that people can keep in touch before arriving.
13. Confirm Vendors
Besides ensuring you're on the same page with the guests, you should also check in with any vendors you booked. Confirm arrival times, payment agreements and more so there are no surprises further down the line.
Week of the Party
Get excited! It's the week of the bachelorette, which means it's almost time to party. Here's what you need to do before partying with the bride-to-be.
14. Make a Food and Drinks Shopping List
Planning on buying or making bachelorette party food and drinks? Then you need to make a list of everything you have to pick up at the store. Don't forget to get a little more than you think you might need so you don't have to go to the store multiple times.
15. Create a Music Playlist
Put everyone in the right mood with the perfect bachelorette party songs. Make a playlist you, the honored guest and other partygoers can collaborate on so everyone feels included.
16. Organize Activities
Double check you have all the supplies you need for the party activities. Whether it's bachelorette beer pong or a scavenger hunt, ensure everything is accounted for so you're not scrambling to find items during the weekend. For those who want a no-fuss activity, create a "buy the bride a drink" Venmo, which in its simplest form requires posting the Venmo username or QR code on social media.
17. Assemble Favors
Whoever is in charge of putting together the favors must start this process now. Even if you're planning a bachelorette weekend that isn't local, begin crafting the favors ahead of time and finish the final touches at the hotel or rental home so there's less work to do later on.
18. Pack Your Suitcase
This one is the most self-explanatory item on our bachelorette weekend checklist. Pack your suitcase if you're traveling or start organizing everything you'll need for the day of the party if you're staying local. Have a lot of decor and party-related items to transport? Consider asking one or two other people to help you lighten the load by bringing stuff in their luggage, but be sure to pack anything fragile in your own carry-on or personal item.
Day of Bachelorette Party
As the host, you should aim to arrive a couple of hours before the bride and the rest of the guests. This will give you time to check out the party space and ensure there are no last-minute surprises before you start decorating and setting up.
19. Prepare Food and Drinks
Responsible for putting together light bites and welcome margaritas? Grab your supplies and get to work. Once you're finished, add some bachelorette party flair by placing the food on decorative trays and putting the drinks in themed cups.
20. Decorate Party Venue
Don't worry about making the space look professionally done and Instagram-worthy. Just ensure you have plenty of tape (if your hotel or rental allows), ribbons, signs and balloons to transform the room(s) at least 20%. We suggest avoiding glitter or confetti for this step, since it can be extremely hard to get rid of.
One Week After
Once you, the bride and guests have enjoyed yourselves, it's time to tie up any loose ends. Here's a few things you need to do on your checklist for planning a bachelorette party.
21. Thank Guests and Follow Up on Final Payments
You made it through to the other side, so congratulate yourself for a job well done. Take a moment to thank anyone who helped you plan the party (a handwritten note or gift card is a sweet gesture if you want to go the extra mile), and then send a general thanks to the rest of the group for attending. This is also the time to follow up on any outstanding expenses and payments that you're waiting on. Lastly, get plenty of rest before it's time to gear up for the wedding.
