The weather outside may be frightful but come wintertime, the wedding fits are as delightful as ever. Winter suits are here and they're just what you need to make the most of your next wedding outfit. From festive colors to cozy fabrics and seasonal accessories, cold-weather wedding fashion can make for memorable looks. Whether you're planning on suiting up in flannel or just trying to find a good way to incorporate a snazzy plaid into your outfit, this is your ultimate guide to winter suiting.

In this article:

What to Look For in a Winter Suit

The biggest thing you want to keep in mind when shopping for a winter suit is fabric. As the weather gets colder, you're going to want a suit that can withstand dropping temperatures and keep you cozy. For this, I recommend looking for a suit made from a flannel blend. Flannel suits are going to provide extra warmth against the cold and come with a soft, luxe, texture that has a great drape.

You're also going to want to aim for seasonally appropriate colors. This means leaving bright summery shades and earthy autumn hues at home. Aim for deep, dark, rich colors like classic black or navy, or lean into the season with plaid prints and holiday-friendly color pops like emerald green or ruby red. A three-piece suit is a winter-friendly pick (plus it puts an extra layer of fabric between you and the cold) and while we're all for double-breasted suits year-round, it's an especially good time to try one out.

Winter Suit Colors

Winter is generally a suitable season for darker colors. Earthy hues rule autumn and spring and summer are the time for pastels and bright shades, but winter is the season in which things quiet down color-wise. There are still some unique shades that make for great suiting looks but you're mostly going to want to stick with neutrals (navy, gray, and black) and patterns here. However, if you feel like venturing outside of those tried and true options, these are the best suit colors for winter.

Green

If you're going with green for a winter suit, go with the right shade. This is a time for deep, vibrant greens rather than earthy shades like olive or brighter pastels. An emerald green suit is the perfect shade for the season.

Red

Red is a staple of winter suiting, especially around the holidays. Stick with classic solid reds or go deeper with a maroon, oxblood, or burgundy shade. Style it with neutral accessories for an unbeatable holiday color combo.

Plaid

Is it technically a color? No, but plaid is as essential a winter suiting style option as any color. The holidays influence winter suiting as much as the weather does and plaids are the perfect pattern to lean into the season. Neutral plaids work just fine and give you space to accessorize with bright pieces (perhaps even in other festive holiday shades) but you can even go with a bold green or red plaid to really capture the moment.

Winter Suit Fabrics

Fabrics are really what set winter suiting apart from the other seasons. There's a need to be as practical as you are fashionable, with dropping temperatures increasing the need for fabric that keeps you warm. Here are some of the essential winter suiting fabrics.

Flannel

Turns out it isn't just for lumberjack shirts. A flannel blend is one of the most reliable options for a winter wedding suit. It's warm, textured, and easy to find when fall and winter suit collections are released every year–most suiting brands offer plenty of flannel options.

Tweed

Tweed is another fabric that blends function and fashion. Originally developed in Ireland and Scotland as a shield against the elements, tweed is made from a patterned weave of wool. It works great as a full suit or can be worn in a suit separates look.
