It's the most wonderful time of the year–and I'm not talking about the holidays; I'm talking about men's fall wedding attire. Autumn lends itself to everything we love about getting dressed, from rich seasonal colors to layering fabrics without having to worry about summer heat. It's the time for rustic groom attire, for tweed jackets and denim shirts and paisley ties, and for some of the flyest double-breasted suits you'll ever lay eyes on (seriously, fall suiting is elite). Grooms, groomsmen, and guests alike should take advantage of the season–fall wedding attire is like a wardrobe cheat sheet that'll have you looking your absolute best all season long.

In this article:

What Is Men's Fall Wedding Attire?

Generally speaking, fall is when wedding attire for men shifts from linens, and bright pastel colors to richer colors, new fabrics, and layering pieces. You'll switch out seersucker and summer cottons for wool, flannel, or tweed suiting. Dress shirt fabrics might get a little thicker or lean into a rustic vibe (we love a denim shirt worn with a suit when the dress code allows for it). Three-piece suits and double-breasted ones become a bit more feasible too as the weather cools down and mixing in bold patterns is definitely a move that's on the table. You'll want to wear socks with your dress shoes or loafers and give a wool or flannel-knit tie a shot.

Men's Formal Fall Wedding Attire

If the dress code you're working with is on the more formal side, fall provides plenty of options. If the wedding has a black-tie or black-tie optional dress code, lean into the tux. Black is a good option year-round, but if you feel like mixing it up, fall is perfect for burgundy or plum tuxedos.

If a suit is more your speed, try with something in a brown or earthy neutral, or in one of the season's signature colors (deep green, orange, burgundy, or purple). It's a great season for three-piece and double-breasted suits as well.

Men's Casual Fall Wedding Attire

Less-formal fall wedding dress codes offer lots of room for experimentation and fun when it comes to putting together your outfit. For semi-formal or dressy casual weddings, mix patterns and fabrics. Suit separates are a great move in the fall, as are less-traditional dress shirts. For example, a tweed sport coat with nice chinos and a denim dress shirt can be a real showstopper. Sweater-knit polos are also a great layering option, as are sweaters over dress shirts and under blazers or suit jackets. If you're going with a full suit, just keep it in the season's color palette–browns, earthy neutrals, and the aforementioned sweet spots of deep green, orange, burgundy, and purple.

We're going to start simple here: need to rent a tux for your wedding and feel like breaking outside of the traditional black dinner jacket field? The Black Tux has you covered. Their plum tuxedo is perfect for fall and complete with a luxe shawl collar that adds a debonair air to your wedding day look. The brand will also rent you your full look–we're talking shirt, tie, shoes, and accessories–for a small upcharge. Feel like keeping the suit? That's an option, too.

Tweed alone is reason enough to call fall the best season for suiting. If you're dressing for a wedding with a cocktail attire dress code (or anything less formal) consider making it your fabric of choice. When you pair a great tweed suit like this one from J. Crew with a crisp dress shirt and loafers (Noah's buckle loafers are a personal favorite these days) you've got a fall fit for the ages. Finish it with a preppy tie.

Tips for Choosing Fall Groomsmen Attire

Putting together groomsmen attire for a fall wedding? Here are some of the best ways to dress your loved ones and capitalize on the coolest trends of the season.

  • Pick a uniform color like brown, burgundy, or olive green - These are colors that aren't just seasonally appropriate but also easy to find from most suit suppliers. It'll make things easier when it comes time for your groomsmen to buy their suits.

  • Choose a signature accessory - Fall is a great season for accessories, from paisley ties to seasonal boutonnieres. Take advantage of this and pick a piece for all of your groomsmen to incorporate into their outfits.

  • Factor in the weather - Fall weather isn't universal and you should take it into consideration when planning your groomsmen fits., If it's going to be on the chillier side, you don't want to make your groomsmen dress in a thin linen or cotton. Similarly, if your wedding is in the fall but happens to take place in a warmer climate, maybe save the flannel suits for another time.
