White Sands National Park in Alamogordo, New Mexico

The United States is lucky to have so many beautiful national parks, but New Mexico really outdid itself with White Sands. Unlike so many places you visit where the reality is different from the "Instagram," White Sands National Park lives up to its hype with endless views of pristine white sand in every direction.

"Vast dunes of glistening white gypsum sand create a magical, otherworldly landscape," says photographer Tony Gambino. "Imagine you and your partner climbing a dune just in time for sunset, the sky ablaze with colors. As you kneel down, the only thing brighter than the sand will be that dazzling smile on their face." It's truly one of the most beautiful places to propose in New Mexico, if not in the world.

Elena Gallegos Open Space in Albuquerque, New Mexico

"With the Sandia Mountains behind you and all of Albuquerque in front of you—surrounded by evergreen junipers and gorgeous cactus—Elena Gallegos Open Space is one of the best locations in Albuquerque for a proposal," says Megan Griego, a photographer based in New Mexico. "It offers incredible scenery and easy-to-walk trails that make it easy to find a little bit of privacy for your special moment."

Hot Air Balloon in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Albuquerque is a major hub for hot air balloons because of its gentle, predictable daily air flow patterns. In fact, it's considered the "Hot Air Balloon Capital of the World." That said, you won't have a difficult time hailing one of these colorful floating taxis, which offer incredible sweeping views across the distance and down below. Time your big question for sunset or sunrise for those dreamy, candy-colored skies. This one's truly one of the most romantic proposal ideas out there.

Santa Fe Botanical Garden in Santa Fe, New Mexico

Step into the beautiful Santa Fe Botanical Gardens and walk out hand-in-hand ready to-be-wed! Featuring eight acres of walking paths, the garden has three primary sections to choose from: the orchards with its fruit trees and meadows, the woodlands with its contemplative piñon-juniper woodland environment, and the "ojos y manos" area featuring raised beds and annual crops. You'll find all sorts of proposal-perfect gems throughout each.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in Chama, New Mexico

For an adventurous throwback, consider popping the question while aboard a train on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. It's the highest and longest (64-miles) steam railroad in North America that zooms through the Rocky Mountain West terrain. You'll depart from the Chama, New Mexico station and have your choice of different cars, including the Victorian-era Parlor car or historic Deluxe Car (the two best for proposals, in our opinion), or the Coach or Gondola cars.

Eagle Nest Lake State Park in Eagle Nest, New Mexico

If you're seeking a scenic place to propose in New Mexico and would like a locale with some shimmering water, consider Eagle Nest Lake State Park. This unspoiled paradise offers vistas of the lofty Moreno Valley Mountains—including New Mexico's highest point, Wheeler Peak—and stretching views of blue, blue water. There are plenty of trails and opportunities to get on the water, too.

Sandia Peak Tramway in Bernalillo County, New Mexico

Another way to propose in the sky is to ride the Sandia Peak Tramway just outside of Albuquerque. In about 15-minutes, this old-school tram soars over 10,000 feet in the sky, showcasing panoramic views of the Sandia Mountains. This is another one of Greigo's favorite places for proposals in New Mexico. "With a breathtaking tram ride up to the top of the crest, you can have a beautiful location to pop the question," she says. "You're surrounded by 360 views of Albuquerque and the Rio Grande Valley."

City of Rocks State Park in Faywood, New Mexico

Nestled in the Chihuahuan desert, City of Rocks State Park is an other-worldly spot that's perfect for proposals in New Mexico. It's not large—it's only about 2.7 square miles—but once you enter you're surrounded by beautiful boulders of all shapes and sizes. Aim for golden hour when the sun lights up the rocks and the sky swirls with color, and make sure to review this proposal checklist beforehand.

Casa Rondeña Winery in Albuquerque, New Mexico

"Nestled in the heart of the North Valley, this winery features beautiful vineyards, charming architecture and a serene atmosphere." Old Town in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Those who prefer a more urban proposal setting in New Mexico should look no further than Old Town ABQ. Founded all the way back in 1706, it remains a thriving city center filled with more than 150 independent restaurants and boutique shops. Stop in front of a colorful shop facade, swing through the town's airy gazebo or perhaps drop a knee right in front of the iconic Secret Passageway.

Old San Miguel Mission in Socorro, New Mexico

If the church is important to you, consider proposing in front of the historic San Miguel Mission, arguably one of the most beautiful structures in Socorro. Dating back to the 1600s, this vibrant Catholic church is one of the few adobe missions in the country (and the world), and features a beautiful double bell tower.

Albuquerque Botanical Gardens in Albuquerque, New Mexico

No matter the time of year, the Albuquerque botanical gardens promise to deliver a treasure trove of beautiful places to propose. "The entire loop through the gardens surrounds you with flowers and beautiful scenery. It is truly always a great location," Griego says. She adds, "During the annual river of lights it's exceptionally beautiful. Surrounded by millions of twinkling lights on a cool winter evening would make for the perfect place to start your forever."

Ojo Santa Fe Spa Resort in Santa Fe, New Mexico

You and bae can take a load off at the Ojo Sante Fe Spa Resort, which also happens to be a gorgeous palace to propose in New Mexico. The 77-acre property sits in the state's high desert and is renowned for its relaxing hot springs and breathtaking grounds. Stay for the weekend for soaking, yoga and good food—and walk away as a newly engaged duo.

Tingley Beach in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Free to the public, Albuquerque's Tingley Beach is ripe for birdwatching, winding walks together, and—you guessed it—scenic proposals. Since there are lots of little spots where you can tuck away, it's a great place to propose in New Mexico if you're looking for a private, quiet spot. Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah in Farmington, New Mexico

If you propose at the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness, there's a pretty solid chance nobody else will have pictures quite like yours. This unique area features a series of towering sandstone caprocks in soft hues that are hard to come by. It's not far from the Bisti Badlands, either, which is another cool place to propose in New Mexico. Gambino says to just remember that this is a sacred place, so it's important to respect the landscape and the local native culture.
