Is Punta Cana a Good Place for a Honeymoon?
With so many amazing tropical destinations to pick from, is Punta Cana a good place for a honeymoon? The answer is yes! If you're looking to plan a honeymoon that's heavy on sun, sand and relaxation, Punta Cana may be the ideal locale for your postwedding getaway. Here are some pros and cons of a Punta Cana honeymoon to consider.
Pros of a Honeymoon in Punta Cana
A Punta Cana honeymoon allows couples to park their beach chair in the sand and truly unwind (perhaps with an umbrella-adorned beverage in hand). Punta Cana's all-inclusive resort options offer tons to do without leaving the grounds (think: five-star dining experiences, mixology courses, dance classes, live shows, watersports, or afternoons spent unwinding in the spa). Should you need to get away during your getaway, some of the best places to visit in Punta Cana include Altos de Chavon for a history lesson, deep-sea fishing cruises, and adventure parks with ziplining. After dark, the Punta Cana nightlife scene is lively but not as raucous as Cancún's.
Cons of a Honeymoon in Punta Cana
As gorgeous, relaxing and fun as a Punta Cana vacation can be, it may not be the right honeymoon option for every couple (especially if you're the kind of people who like to get out and explore). Though you can engage in water sports like scuba, snorkeling and parasailing, much of the fun is found at the resorts. There's history, but you're not going to have as many excursions filled with visits to historical sights as you would in, say, Rome or Tulum. Punta Cana honeymoon packages at resorts make planning easy, but it can feel cookie-cutter if you're looking for something a little more tailored.
The Best Time to Visit Punta Cana
With temperatures hovering in the mid-80s most of the year, the truth is that there isn't a bad time to visit Punta Cana (especially for a honeymoon). "Punta Cana enjoys a consistently warm and tropical climate throughout the year, making it a popular destination in every season," says Dominique Richard, General Manager at Secrets Tides Punta Cana. "Rainfall is at its lowest between December and April, but there are benefits to visiting the island during the summer and fall months, as visitors will enjoy peak lush, green vibrant scenery."
If you're looking to escape frigid temperatures, planning a Punta Cana honeymoon during winter or spring is a great idea. That said, you might encounter larger crowds and higher prices since this is considered the region's peak season. You may also want to plan your honeymoon around Punta Cana's peak rainy period. "Like all islands in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is sometimes impacted during the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November," says Richard. "While severe weather is relatively uncommon, it is always recommended that guests stay informed when planning travel during that time."
Punta Cana Travel Tips for Couples
Punta Cana is a laidback spot where any time is island time, but knowing some particulars can ensure you maximize your relaxation. Let's start with one of the biggest questions tourists ask: Is it safe to travel to Punta Cana? The U.S. Department of State recommends exercising increased caution when traveling to the Dominican Republic because of crime. Resorts are generally safe, but it's always a good idea to be mindful of your surroundings and stick with another person or a group if you venture off-property.
Punta Cana is located on the Dominican Republic's easternmost tip, so getting there is a shorter trip for US travelers coming from the Northeast and the South. Plan for about four hours from New York and five hours from Dallas, whereas West Coast couples can expect an eight- or 10-hour flight. We recommend setting up a car service to your destination ahead of time, as getting a taxi driver at Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) can be expensive (and a little overwhelming). Your resort may assist you in setting up transfers to and from the airport, or you can book it yourself through a company like Amstar.
- Entry requirements: US citizens are required to present a valid passport when traveling to Punta Cana, as well as proof of anticipated departure. Travelers must also complete an electronic entry and exit ticket from the General Directorate of Immigration and the General Directorate of Customs.
- Language: Spanish
- Location: Punta Cana is a resort town on the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean.
- Currency: The Dominican peso is the official currency, but US dollars are widely accepted.
- Flight time to destination: Direct flights from New York to Punta Cana take about three and a half to four hours, while a flight from California could be between eight and 10 hours.
- Getting around: Rental cars, private ride services and taxis are common ways to get around Punta Cana. Many resorts also partner with shuttle services to provide transportation to and from attractions.
Pro tip: Invite a honeymoon planning expert to join your vendor team. Browse travel agents near you on The Knot Marketplace for Punta Cana honeymoon expertise.
Best Day Trips from Punta Cana
A Punta Cana honeymoon itinerary will likely include tons of activities at your all-inclusive resort. But if you're in the mood to get off the property and explore, couples can venture beyond those gorgeous grounds for worthwhile adventures. From history lessons to ecological wonders, these are the top day trips to take during your Punta Cana vacation.
Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve
If you're looking for things to do on your honeymoon in Punta Cana, visiting the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve should be at the top of your list. This dreamy nature preserve is set on 1,500 sprawling acres of subtropical forest, making it a serene retreat. Guests can take a dip in the peaceful turquoise waters of five of the 12 lagoons, stroll through abundant vegetation, and spot 500 species of plants. Trails are perfect for a leisurely arm-in-arm walk for hikers of all experience levels.
Santo Domingo
A touch under three hours outside of Punta Cana, Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic. Because of the distance, consider a full-day excursion here, preferably with a spa day slated to begin the following morning. The city is a way to dive into something other than the glistening waters of the Caribbean Sea. Home to a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Colonial Zone, it's full of monuments that pay homage to the nation's history. Many tours will provide transportation for you, alleviating stress.
Saona Island
A 90-minute ferry ride from Punta Cana, Saona Island's crystal-clear waters, sugary-soft sands and palm trees provide a quintessential Caribbean experience. Full-day cruises include time to explore the island and snorkel. Though the place is popular among tourists, people say the vibe isn't too raucous; It's peaceful enough that the local birds provide the soundtrack to the day.
Altos de Chavon
You don't have to jet off to Europe to learn about history. Set an hour outside Punta Cana and atop the Chavón river, Altos de Chavon transports visitors back to the 16th century. Designed in the 1970s, Altos de Chavon's medieval architecture and handcrafted cobblestone walkways are made to resemble a historic Mediterranean village. Charming shops, restaurants and river vistas make it a worthy reason to leave the comforts of a resort.
Hacienda Tuko Adventure Park
After a few days of relaxing poolside or on the beach, you may be craving a little jolt of adrenaline the resort coffee shop cannot provide. Hacienda Tuko Adventure Park offers options aplenty for honeymooners who fit this bill. On a ziplining excursion, get a bird's eye view of a flourishing Dominican jungle. Horseback and dune buggy rides are also available through tours, many of which will handle transportation from the park to and from your hotel.
Macao Beach
Think all Punta Cana beaches are the same? Not in this case. Macao Beach's white sands make it a popular draw for tourists and locals alike. Though your resort may also boast brilliant shores, moving your chair here gives you an opportunity to mingle with the locals for an authentic Dominican Republic experience. Bonus for people looking to hang 10: The waves are known for being some of the best for surfing in the DR.
Best Things to Do in Punta Cana for Couples
What are the best things to do on a Punta Cana honeymoon? While you can certainly spend your days lounging on Bali beds or hopping from pool bar to pool bar at your resort, there are plenty of other fun activities for couples to do in Punta Cana. Here are some of our top recommendations.
Go Snorkeling
The coastline of Punta Cana is dotted with colorful marinas. If you want to enjoy a day out on the water, book a catamaran cruise that offers fun water activities like snorkeling or splashing around a sandbar. Many packages also include lunch and unlimited beverages on board (including cocktails), allowing you to indulge in a picture-perfect coastal voyage.
Hit the Golf Course
Did you know that Punta Cana is home to some of the world's most renowned golf courses? It's true! If you're itching to get out on the green, schedule a tee time at a beautiful course overlooking the Caribbean's turquoise water. Avid golfers may want to try their hand at Punta Espada Golf Course, a 72-par green designed by legendary golf icon Jack Nicklaus.
Take a Dance Class...
What's one of the most romantic things to do in Punta Cana? Go dancing, of course! The bachata originated in the Dominican Republic in the 20th century and is now the nation's signature dance move. Couples who shine on the dance floor will love having yet another opportunity to bust a move after their wedding reception. Private dance classes taught by locals offer an authentic Dominican flair. Courses can last an hour and allow couples to learn the basics in an intimate, no-pressure setting.
...Then, Dance the Night Away
Once you've got your new moves down, break them out on the Dominican dance floor. The Punta Cana nightlife is a welcome respite for those looking to exchange those flip-flops for dance shoes. Coco Bongo Punta Cana cranks out popular and time-honored dance hits and so much more. Think confetti bombs, balloons, performances by dancers and acrobats, and video entertainment that raises the bar on a night out.
Book a Spa Day
Need a change of scenery? Snag a daycation. Services like ResortPass offer day passes to other Punta Cana hotels and resorts. Some, like Iberostar Punta Cana, offer spa wellness packages. Adults can get access to a hydrotherapy pool with a tranquil waterfall, sauna, steam room, and whirlpool bath. Consider it a vacation from your vacation that'll leave you feeling rested and rejuvenated
Learn to Cook
For some, cooking is a relaxing and bonding experience. Since Caribbean cuisine is full of flavor and spice and everything nice, taking a cooking class is an underrated choice for things to do in Punta Cana for couples. Learn to chef up Chillo al coco or red snapper like a pro from a pro. Many local private chefs will come to you and offer to dish on secret ingredients, techniques and recipes, such as charcoal grilling.
The Best Resorts and Hotels in Punta Cana

What to Pack for a Punta Cana Honeymoon
Punta Cana is known for its laid-back energy, especially with it being a place where the beach or pool is easily accessible. With that in mind, you'll want to know exactly what to pack for a vacation in Punta Cana so you can have a fuss-free stay. Bring at least two swimsuits to avoid the need to do laundry. Flowy, breezy cotton dresses, shorts, polos, and lightweight T-shirts will keep you cool even when the sun is shining bright. Speaking of which, sunscreen is a must.
Though it's usually sunny in Punta Cana, you'll want to pack a raincoat just in case, especially if you're traveling during hurricane season. And while many resorts do offer umbrellas in your room, it won't hurt to bring your own just in case. Most resort restaurants have dress codes, but elevated beachwear is typically appropriate. Be sure to pack a few options for upscale dinners and dancing, like an LBD and heels or a jumpsuit. Clean slacks and a collared shirt with dress shoes are also appropriate. If you plan to venture off the resort for adventures, pack comfy walking shoes like sneakers, a wide-brimmed hat and a backpack to store all of your essentials. Otherwise, flip-flops will do. (You'll find that most resorts are barefoot anyway!)
