Houfek says the weather likes to keep you guessing. "Summer and early fall are absolutely beautiful, but spring can still be a little chilly, and winter is best if you love that cozy, snowed-in kind of vibe—there are so many cute cabins for this," she says.

Another factor is that the state's pretty spread out, so you'll need a car to get around, versus relying on public transit. For couples who love a road trip, though, this is a perk!

There's something to love in every season, so think about that vibe you're going for and the items you want to add to your itinerary. "If you want to see all that Michigan has to offer, summer is the best time to visit," Wenzel says. "But if you're looking for a cozy, relaxing trip, fall is perfect for renting an A-frame cabin in the woods, sitting by the fire and going on hikes."

Houfek agrees, adding that late May through October is a sweet spot, with June and September being her favorite times of year. "It's warm enough for the beach, but not overly crowded," she notes. "Winter can be incredibly romantic, too, with fireplaces, hot tubs, and snow falling outside while you stay in with a bottle of wine."

Michigan Honeymoon Planning Tips

The best piece of advice we have for a Michigan honeymoon is to focus on the experiences you want to have versus checking off locations. Michigan has so many little hidden corners that feel like they were made for slowing down and just being together, Houfek tells us. "Catch the sunrise over Lake Huron and then end the day watching it set on Lake Michigan," she says. "Book a cute bed-and-breakfast or an Airbnb with a view and a fire pit. And if you're visiting during summer or festival season, like the Cherry Festival or Tulip Time, definitely plan ahead because the good spots fill up fast."

Another hot tip: Embrace the slower pace of a honeymoon destination like Michigan. Avoid overpacking your schedule so you can slow down enough to actually enjoy your time together. Houfek says to leave plenty of buffer in your schedule for those spontaneous little moments, like stopping at a roadside fruit stand, pulling over for a lake view or sitting on the dock with coffee in the morning.

"I always tell couples to mix a few 'must-dos' with plenty of downtime," Houfek says. "Plan one or two special dinners or adventures, but also give yourselves permission to just stay in, watch the sunset or explore a nearby town with no agenda."

Mackinac Island

Our list of the best places to honeymoon in Michigan would be quite remiss without a Mackinac Island mention (pronounced "mackinaw"). This is one of the most unique places in the country, as no cars are allowed—just bikes! "The downtown boutiques are adorable. You'll definitely end up shopping, and if you can, then stay overnight," Houfek says. "Once the last ferry leaves around 9 p.m., it feels completely different—calm, quiet and so romantic."

Flower Festivals

Michigan has some of the most beautiful flower festivals in the entire country. You'll need to time it right, but if you can swing it, they're 100% worth doing, Wenzel says. The Tulip Festival is in May in Holland (yep, it has a strong Dutch influence), and there's also the Lilac Festival on Mackinac Island in June. You'll never forget how that festival smells!

Traverse City & Old Mission Peninsula

Spend the day bouncing between wineries and breweries, taking in the views and just enjoying the day together in Traverse City and Old Mission Peninsula. "There are so many cute stops along the way, and spots to grab a snack, take pictures or just sit and take it all in," Houfek tells us. "The food scene is great, too, whether you want something laid-back or a nice dinner by the water."

The Upper Peninsula

While the lower half of Michigan gets lots of attention, don't write off the idea of a honeymoon in Upper Peninsula Michigan. "If you're an outdoorsy couple, the U.P. is incredible," Houfek says. "It's all about adventure and quiet moments in nature, like chasing waterfalls, hiking through the woods, and finding those hidden lookout spots that take your breath away." She says that Pictured Rocks and Tahquamenon Falls are must-sees, and if you visit in winter, there's even a chance to catch the Northern Lights.

Detroit

Detroit is a real comeback kid, and today is bursting with cool, creative energy. Houfek says it's one of those cities that really surprises visitors, but in the best way. "There's amazing food everywhere, and the art scene is huge with murals, live music and galleries," she says. "The city is vibrant, full of history, and has this mix of edge and romance that makes it perfect for couples who want something different."

What to Pack for a Michigan Honeymoon

No matter the time of year, pack layers so you're prepared for whatever the weather has in store. Cozy sweaters with an underlayer and waterproof jackets are good choices for spring and fall. You'll want more warmth in the winter, and a bit less in the summer.

For outdoor exploring, pack comfy shoes and attire and don't forget your swimsuit if you want to hit one of those glorious lakes the state's famous for. Also, add some dressier outfits to your suitcase for nice dinners or lunches, like for a snazzy meal in downtown Detroit or wine tasting in Traverse City.
