On the hunt for the perfect honeymoon? Well, look no further… introducing the private island that exemplifies Caribbean paradise: Mustique. Part of a set of islands making up the nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the West Indies, Mustique has long been the destination to see and be seen (it's regularly frequented by the rich and famous, including the British Royal Family). Your Mustique honeymoon guarantees sun, sea, sand and seclusion.

Privately owned and operated by the Mustique Company, the tropical destination is home to the elite, yet remains refreshingly understated and humble (well, as humble as wealth of this tier can be). While it's worth noting that there are no direct flights to Mustique from the US, travel is still pretty straightforward and the island is undoubtedly and completely worth the journey. If you're not convinced, we're going into more detail below as to why this uber-luxe island should be on the top of your honeymoon destination list.

Is Mustique Good for a Honeymoon?

Without a doubt, yes. Picturesque, self-contained and overflowing with ways to spend your time, a Mustique honeymoon can be as relaxed or action-packed as you like. Retire to the privacy of your villa or hotel, or grab yourself a piece of the action and enjoy the more social side of the island, which features tennis clubs, water sports, lively dinners, DJs and more.

Pros of a Honeymoon in Mustique

From the multitude of beaches and crystal blue waters at every turn to the extensive establishments for dining, Mustique offers complete relaxation paired with chic style and comfort throughout. Those looking to throw themselves into an action-packed honeymoon are also in for a treat; the equestrian center invites guests to explore the island's hilly landscape on horseback, and those looking to practice their serve can head down to the Mustique Tennis Centre to play other guests during daily drop-in games.

Cons of a Honeymoon in Mustique

While it's quite hard to find fault in a self-contained island escape of this caliber, it always comes down to personal preference, and those who like to venture further afield and explore might find Mustique a little too secluded. Slightly further removed from neighboring islands and about as exclusive as it gets, this level of privacy and elitism might not suit everyone's taste.

The Best Times to Visit Mustique

For winter sun at its best, book your Mustique honeymoon any time from December to April and you're pretty much guaranteed mild, bright and sunny weather. We just advise avoiding June through November as it's hurricane season—this means not only a high chance of rain, but also many of the island businesses shut down.

If you're looking to time your visit with some extra Caribbean swag, then booking at the end of January through February is a must to coincide with the island's annual Blues Festival, which takes place at Basil's Bar.

Mustique Travel Tips for Couples

If you're not already sold on Mustique as a honeymoon destination, then its level of safety might just tip the balance. Commended for being peaceful and community-led—as one would expect with such an elite entry criterion—crime levels are low to non-existent. As for travel, this show-stopping honeymoon destination is slightly further removed from the normal tourist spots, not to mention significantly smaller, and with that, there are no direct flights from the US or Europe.

From the US, the most direct route is to fly to Barbados or St. Lucia before taking a one-hour private flight on one of the island's 18-seater Twin Otter aircraft shuttles. Of course, there's also the direct route from St. Vincent to Mustique via a short seven-minute flight or quick catamaran sail.

The island runs on Atlantic Standard Time, the same as the East Coast of the US, so there's no crazy jet lag to get your head around. Currency on the island is either the US dollar or the Eastern Caribbean dollar. On the island, there are around 120 private villas, with many available to rent—a favorite for first-time guests is The Cotton House and its stunning suites.

The Best Mustique Resorts and Hotels for a Honeymoon

The Cotton House Hotel

The Cotton House is a breathtakingly beautiful estate just off Endeavour Bay that's housed amongst 13 acres of luscious tropical gardens. With 17 rooms, from sea-view suites and private residences to cozy cottages (each with its own unique selling points), the estate as a whole is a sight for sore eyes. Guests staying on the estate can look forward to extensive sea views, tropical gardens and complete relaxation—not to mention access to The Cotton House's popular Veranda Restaurant and Bar where Friday night happy hour is highly recommended, as is the weekly bonfire barbecue.

Villa Galaman

One of only a few more modestly sized luxury properties on Mustique, Galaman is one of the best hotels in Mustique for a honeymoon. Set amongst luscious tropical gardens and celebrating Balinese style and furnishings throughout, this two-bedroom villa has a beautiful pool house complete with three water features, all of which feed into the villa's gentle jungle tree house feel.

Villa Moana

Just a stone's throw away from L'Ansecoy Bay, Villa Moana is a tropical garden paradise built by renowned Mustique architect Arne Hasselqvist. It's the perfect example of the island's original vision of ensuring all villas were designed to blend seamlessly into their surroundings.

With an expansive terrace overlooking soaring ocean views, couples can enjoy three bedrooms to choose from, alongside a beautifully breezy open-plan living space and split-level swimming pool.

Best Things to Do on a Mustique Honeymoon

Visit Basil's Bar

The place to be for guests, locals and boaters alike, Basil's Bar is a hub of activity, promising good vibes, delicious cocktails and a warm welcome to all. Boasting several weekly events, including live bands, local DJs and Taco and Tequila Thursdays, this is the place to be for some true St. Vincent warmth.

Go on a Hike

With endless hilly routes, Mustique is an explorer's dream. While the island itself might be small, the (usually) complimentary open-air mule vehicles are a brilliant way to whizz around to different parts of the island and stumble across new trails. Every route is a discovery in itself, brimming with biodiversity and sensational views. We recommend trying the Bird Sanctuary walk for some bird-spotting fun. For those looking to rack up their daily step count, it takes around four hours to hike the entire island.

Gain Your Scuba Diving Certification

With waters so clear you can see the sand beneath your feet, it's no surprise that Mustique provides the perfect conditions for scuba diving. With a dedicated team of professional PADI instructors and dive masters, the island boasts all the best equipment ready to welcome even the most inexperienced of divers. If you're looking to make memories, this is certainly an activity for the books.

What to Pack for a Mustique Honeymoon

First up, sunscreen—a must on every vacation, but with rays as glorious as these, we're recommending sunscreen, sunscreen and more sunscreen. As mentioned before, while Mustique is an island for the truly wealthy, glitz and glam are nowhere to be seen—understated smart casual clothing is more the vibe. Mosquito repellent is also recommended.
