What Is Wedding Season?
"Wedding season" is the time of year when the majority of weddings happen. While there's certainly not a worst time of year to say "I do," you should understand that doing so during the most popular months to get married can greatly impact your planning process. If you're on a mission to keep your budget down, peak season might consist of wedding dates to avoid. Prices are typically higher during this time due to the increase in demand for vendors and venues, and you'll likely need to start researching and booking both earlier than the dates listed on our wedding planning checklist to secure them before other couples.
When Is Wedding Season?
While the exact start and end times vary slightly from year to year, we typically see weddings begin to pick up in the summer and peak in the fall. According to our study, 41% of last year's weddings took place between September and November, solidifying fall as peak wedding season. Summer was the second most popular wedding season last year, with 28% of couples getting married between June and August. This comes as no surprise, as wedding peak season was very similar in years prior. In 2023, 42% of weddings took place in the fall and 25% took place in the summer, with data in 2022 and 2021 varying only slightly.
When Is Wedding Off-Season?
Winter is considered the off-season for weddings. Only 9% of weddings took place between December and February last year, making it the least popular season to get married. Winter weddings peaked in December, which accounted for 5% of weddings in 2024. That said, December has the most lucky wedding dates in 2025.
Most Popular Months to Get Married
Wondering what wedding season months reign supreme? Here's how they stack up based on our internal data.
1. October
October came in as the most popular wedding month last year, accounting for 17% of weddings in 2024. The October wedding trend is likely to continue, since it's been the busiest month for weddings in years prior. October was responsible for 17% of weddings in 2023, 20% of weddings in 2022 and 22% of weddings in 2021.
2. September
The next most popular wedding dates are in September, with 15% of weddings within the month last year. This is a slight decrease from 2023, when 17% of weddings took place in September. However, like in 2024, 15% of couples had September weddings in 2022.
3. June
Early summer is the third most popular time of the year to get married, with 12% of weddings taking place in June last year. This is a small increase from 2023, when 11% of weddings happened in June.
4. May & August
Tied as the fourth most popular months for weddings are May and August, each accounting for 10% of the weddings in 2024. This is a major change from years prior, as we saw July and August collectively take fourth place in 2023 and 2022.
Least Popular Months to Get Married
January and February are tied for the least popular months to get married, with only 2% of couples having their wedding during those times in 2024. This is a slight decrease from 2023, where these off-peak wedding season months were responsible for 3% of weddings that year. This is one of the reasons that January is the cheapest month to get married.
December and March follow, each attributing to 5% of weddings in 2024. Like January and February, these off-season wedding months were even less popular last year than they were in 2023, when they collectively accounted for 11% of weddings.
How to Choose the Best Time of Year to Get Married
Now that you know all about what wedding season is, when it happens and why it matters, what should you do next? As you think through how to pick a wedding date, remember that the best time of year for a wedding differs for every couple. While June might be a great choice for to-be-weds in the Pacific Northwest, a couple in the Southern US—especially one that wants to get married outdoors—might strongly disagree that June is a good month to get married. That's why it's crucial that you discuss your vision, venue and location with your partner and consider how the weather may come into play.
Next, keep in mind that the demand for wedding vendors is higher during peak season, so you'll want to ensure you have ample time to browse The Knot Vendor Marketplace and secure your favorites. Peak season for weddings can also mean higher prices, so allow room in your budget for rate increases if you plan on tying the knot during one of the "best" months for weddings. Once you make a decision, the final and easiest steps are to start a wedding website and share when the wedding day will be with your guests.
