Choosing the right Christian wedding invitation wording can help set the tone for your special day months ahead of time. More than simply listing details, your invitations can serve as a sacred space to reflect the faith, love and deeper meaning behind your marriage. What's more, with thoughtful wording, your stationery becomes both personal and inspiring for the guests who will share in your celebration.

From timeless verses to more modern expressions of faith, there are countless ways to weave your beliefs—and favorite scriptures—into your wedding invitation wording. With insights from Kelley Nudo, client relations and operations director at Momental Designs, a wedding stationery company in West Wyoming, Pennsylvania, and Hyde Park, Vermont-based wedding planner Jaclyn Watson, this guide shares practical tips and examples to help your Christian wedding invitations strike the perfect balance between reverence and style. To make the advice widely applicable, we've included wording options suited to different Christian denominations as well as more general faith-centered choices for inclusivity. Don't forget to search The Knot Vendor Marketplace for officiants and other wedding pros to incorporate your Christian faith in your wedding.

Christian Wedding Invitation Wording

Typically, Christian wedding invitations follow the same outline as secular invitations and include the names of the hosts, the names of the couple, the wedding date and location; these are all of the essentials. However, couples who have chosen to have a Christian wedding ceremony may wish to incorporate wording that reflects their faith. For example, says Nudo, "Using phrases for the first line of the invitation, such as 'By the blessing of God,' or 'Through God's grace,' or adding 'invite you to witness their exchange of vows before God,' are common wording options for consideration." Similarly, "Couples can also replace the word 'marriage' with 'sacred holy union' to further convey that the ceremony will be religious."

Church wedding venues often have a specific dress code, so it's smart to include this information on the enclosure cards. However, Nudo tells The Knot that for black-tie weddings, the dress code is typically specified on the invitation itself. The key is to be as direct as possible to ensure all guests, including those who may not be familiar with Christian wedding traditions, do not feel out of place. Nudo recommends keeping it simple with something like "Modest attire is very much appreciated for our ceremony."

PS: If you're looking for an easy way to make these customizations, The Knot Invitations offers customizable designs in which you can add scripture or Christian invitation wording for weddings. You can also choose fonts, colors and layouts that best suit your wedding theme and vision.

Catholic Wedding Invitation Wording

According to Nudo, Catholic wedding invitations are often referred to as a Nuptial Mass. Both she and Watson note that phrasing like "the sacrament of holy matrimony" is customary.

Sample wording:

In the presence of God Almighty, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith request the honor of your presence at the Nuptial Mass uniting their daughter Jane Smith to John Doe in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony

Protestant Wedding Invitation Wording

Catholic and Protestant wedding invitation wording for a Christian marriage is pretty similar, save for a few subtle differences. Per Nudo, "The main difference between Catholic and Protestant invitation wording would be that the Catholic ceremonies are typically referred to as the 'Nuptial Mass,' while Protestants do not use the term 'Mass.'" Additionally, says Nudo, "The location of the ceremony may also give away whether it will be Catholic or Protestant, as some church names specify the denominations, such as First United Methodist Church or Old Santa Rosa Catholic Church."

Sample wording:

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith request the honor of your presence at the holy union of their daughter, Jane Smith, to John Doe

Lutheran Wedding Invitation Wording

Lutheran invitations follow much of the same etiquette as the above Christian denominations. However, some couples may emphasize reverence by choosing language that reflects the sacred covenant of marriage.

Sample wording:

By the blessing of God, you are invited to witness the sacred holy union of Jane Smith and John Doe

General Christian Wedding Invitation Wording

According to Watson, general Christian invitations don't have to tie themselves to a specific denomination. The below Christian wedding invitation wording example "covers all denominations, including not having it in the church." She also notes that it's the most popular option among her clients.

Sample wording:

Together with their families, Jane Smith and John Doe invite you to join them as they unite in marriage before God

Christian Wedding Invitation Quotes

Couples often choose to weave meaningful quotes or scripture into their invitation suite as a way of setting the tone for their wedding day. While the main card should remain focused on essential details and logistics, the supplemental pieces (such as inserts, wraps or envelope liners) present the perfect canvas for subtle spiritual touches. As Nudo explains, "Couples can opt to include scripture in their wedding invitations and choose a verse that has personal meaning and really resonates with them to set the tone for not only the wedding day, but also their marriage." She notes that verses tend to work beautifully on hang tags, paper wraps or even as a closing line, which helps to ensure the main card doesn't feel too text-heavy.

Watson echoes this approach, advising couples to keep verses off the primary invitation itself. "Our suggestions have been to use verses on the details card, invite back or the envelope liner." She also advises weaving these beautiful bible verses about love into your wedding website or program. Alternatively, incorporate them into your Christian wedding ceremony script, church wedding decorations or through various Christian wedding songs.

1 Corinthians 13:4–7

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud… Love never fails."

With its timeless message about the true nature of love, this beloved passage is one of the most classic Christian wedding invitation bible quotes. Its short-but-sweet length means it works well on top of inserts, programs or as a featured element on a wedding website, while keeping the main card simple and clean.

Song of Solomon 3:4

"I have found the one whom my soul loves."

Romantic yet to the point, this sweet verse is best suited for minimalist designs or modern suites where you want one simple but powerful line to shine. It's especially effective on inserts, envelopes or even as a closing line.

Ecclesiastes 4:12

"A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."

This verse highlights faith as the strength within marriage, making it ideal for couples who want to emphasize the spiritual foundation of their union. Consider using it on ceremony programs, vows books or wraps that tie together the invitation suite—it's all in the details!

1 John 4:19

"We love because He first loved us."

Observant couples may choose this verse as a succinct reminder that love begins with God and flows into their marriage. Its brevity makes it exceptionally versatile, pairing well with smaller stationery accents such as hang tags, detail cards or even website banners, where a short but powerful line can shine.

Colossians 3:14

"And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."

This verse beautifully emphasizes love as the unifying force in a marriage, making it a thoughtful addition to any wedding invitation. Place this Christian wedding invitation wording from the bible on programs, invitation backs or wraps where its message of unity can truly shine through.
