If you can't imagine tying the knot without a classic, elegant champagne toast, then scouting the best wedding champagne is probably on your long list of to-dos. What Kind of Champagne Is Served at Weddings?

Champagne is a sparkling beverage that's only produced in the Champagne region of France. Its bubbly fizz and crisp flavor profile—along with that iconic pop—make it an excellent beverage for a celebratory toast. Champagne ranges from very dry to very sweet, with the popular brut variety right in the middle of this range. It features a dry flavor and a slightly sweet finish.

Popular alternatives to authentic champagne are prosecco, which is made in Italy, cava from Spain and crémant, which hails from France (but not from the Champagne region). These blends offer more budget-friendly options with that favorite fizz we all know and love.

When it comes to serving champagne at a wedding, there are no hard and fast rules you need to follow, or any particular "best way" to do it. Instead, consider things like your favorite kind (if you have one), your budget and what food you might pair it with.

According to Lyons, about 90% of the champagne for weddings is brut. Many consider this a safe bet as the best champagne for a wedding toast, as it strikes a nice balance between dry and sweet, catering to a variety of tastes. She also sees lots of couples choose the following:

  • Rosé: For a sweeter finish and a slightly pink hue
  • Blanc de blancs: A crisp, clear option
  • Blanc de noirs: An elegant, dark champagne with a heartier taste
  • Vintage champagne: Some couples use this to pay homage to a certain year
  • Prestige cuvée: This category contains some of the priciest champagnes, like Cristal and Dom Pérignon

How Much Does Champagne Cost for a Wedding?

The amount of money you can expect to shell out for a good wedding champagne varies widely, based mainly on the type you purchase. High-end bottles of champagne, like Cristal, can cost more than $300 per bottle, according to Total Wine. Evan Askey, general manager at Vast, says, "If you want real champagne without the heavy markup, try Jacquart or Charles de Cazanove—both offer great quality at a friendlier price [at $60 and $44 respectively at Total Wine]." Veuve Clicquot is another amazing brut in the $50 range.

In addition, you can snag a beautiful bottle of crémant for under $30, like the blush-colored Levert or a handsome green bottle of Henri Champliau. Prosecco, which Askey says offers an easy-drinking, crowd-pleasing and affordable base for bubbly signature cocktails, clocks in at as low as $10 to $15 per bottle.

But, Askey says, "If you're going big when choosing your wedding champagne, make it count. Billecart-Salmon rosé is a stunner—definitely one of those 'if you know, you know' bottles," he says. "Cristal gets side-eye from some, but it's consistently a top blind pick among master sommeliers for a reason—it's incredible. Dom Pérignon brings that iconic, smooth luxury, and Krug Grande cuvée is deep, bold and unforgettable. Any of these will have people talking—and remembering," Askey says.
