Though we're smack dab in the middle of pumpkin spice season, there's one classic drink you shouldn't forget: hot chocolate. And if your mouth is already watering over this, then just you wait until we talk about a wedding hot cocoa bar. A warm cup of cocoa makes the perfect wedding dessert, and each guest can add their own toppings for a unique experience.

We had a chat with Chris Stana of Hot Shots Coffee, a coffee and cocoa caterer in Frisco, Texas, and Nora Sheils, wedding planner and founder of Bridal Bliss Event Planning in Oswego, Oregon. They both had a lot of helpful advice for having your own hot cocoa bar for weddings. Plus, finding the right vendors to bring this creative station to life is easy with The Knot Vendor Marketplace. Here's all the hot (cocoa) gossip for injecting your wedding with the most comforting drink around.

Hot Cocoa Tips: Definition | Ideas | How to Hire

What is a Wedding Hot Cocoa Bar?

A bar all about hot chocolate…need we say more? Sheils has some experience with couples serving up this sweet treat at their weddings. She explains, "What is cozier than hot cocoa on a cold day? It's such a fun station to include at your wedding, especially if you're hosting it in the winter."

Simply put, this type of drink station involves either self-serve hot cocoa or a bartender/barista who makes it especially for each guest. Adding a hot chocolate bar at wedding receptions is something you can DIY or hire out vendors for, and either way, it's such a sweet touch to your day. It's also a big hit at fall or winter weddings. Stana says, "Warm hot chocolate can be something different and create a cozy environment for your reception or cocktail hour, especially with outdoor weddings this time of year."

As for what you'll need, Sheils recommends, "Get creative! Outside the basics like whipped cream, marshmallows and chocolate chips, beef it up with all the fixings! Think sprinkles, toffee bits, caramel/chocolate sauces, crushed peppermint, cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice, coconut flakes, marshmallows in unique flavors and of course, vodka and/or peppermint schnapps." You can also use hot cocoa bombs for something kids will especially love.

A wedding hot cocoa bar is one of the tastiest catering trends, and it'll be a hit for guests of all ages at your reception. One pro tip from Sheils: "Check with your venue and/or caterer to double-check whether you can bring the station in or are required to use what is available in-house." Here are some hot chocolate bar wedding ideas you can add to your mood board. 6. Cozy Hot Cocoa Cocktails

Another pro tip from Stana: "[Hot cocoa] is a great option for adults who want something other than alcohol, but those who do can also have a boozy hot chocolate by adding alcohol to these drinks, like bourbon, or my favorite, peppermint liquor." You can even add some upscale custom wafers or printed marshmallows with your monogram or engagement photos for a customized feel.

7. Hot Chocolate Stand Wedding Cups

Give your guests the café experience with personalized hot chocolate cups for weddings. One adorable idea is to get custom logos or have cups at your hot cocoa station to match your wedding colors.

8. Vintage, Mobile Hot Chocolate Bar at Weddings

A hot cocoa bar at wedding receptions or cocktail hours can become an interactive station for your guests. "Something that we see guests go crazy for is the create-your-flavor customization… [with] a self-serve hot chocolate bar where guests can come and not only help themselves to the hot chocolate, but add marshmallows, peppermint sprinkles, cinnamon sticks and fun drizzles that create an experience," Stana adds.

How to Find a Hot Cocoa Bar Near You

Our wedding planning expert has some advice for couples to make their hot cocoa cart, mobile bar and more as stress-free as possible. Sheils says, "Arrange for an attendant or two to assist the guests, elevate the experience and keep the area tidy, since all these treats can get messy fast. Also, get creative with signage, and design the station with containers and utensils that coordinate with the event's aesthetic. Even hot cocoa can be upscale!"

For a hot chocolate bar wedding, hire an expert who can set up, serve and sweeten up your guests' nights with a tasty cup that'll keep them warm. You can also search for the right vendors who offer the perfect pairings of late-night food to go with your hot cocoa bar. Think freshly baked cookies, a s'mores experience or even some roasted nuts for that wintery feel. The Knot Vendor Marketplace makes it easy to find both rentals and bar services and beverages in your area, and they might also offer other fun drinks like coffee, mocktails, cider and other non-alcoholic alternatives for your bar. All you need is to enter your marrying location, and you can filter by different elements, such as your catering budget, or simply search "hot chocolate" to find storefronts that offer this service.
