What is a Gothic Renaissance Wedding?

A Gothic renaissance wedding is a wedding style that's defined by "a dark, moody and romantic-themed take on traditional nuptials," says Kelly Dellinger, who spent a decade planning weddings for Kelly Dellinger Events. Black is a staple in a Gothic wedding color palette, often accented with rich colors of crimson, plum or even forest green. It captures the eerie beauty of the Renaissance era, seen in details like ornate candelabras, Renaissance arches, antique-looking furniture and gilded frames.

Ideal Gothic Wedding Locations

Specific architectural details are key when looking at Gothic wedding venues, Dellinger says. "Castles, or anything castle-adjacent, are immediately a yes," she says. "Historic churches with stone features, tall vaulted ceilings, dramatic lanterns and pipe organs are idyllic for this theme. Stained glass windows, flying buttresses and pointed arches also fit the aesthetic."

It helps if the building has neo-Gothic architecture, says Elizabeth Raley of Elope to Savannah. But if you're looking for outdoor Gothic wedding ideas, you might want to consider a cemetery with old monuments, statues, angels and crosses, she says. "The theme is pre-made if you're already in a location like that," she explains, adding that if you do get married in a cemetery, make sure you abide by the rules and don't touch the monuments or markers.

You can always find venues for Gothic weddings near you by heading to The Knot Vendor Marketplace and filtering the reception venues category by location and venue type—castle, historic venue, religious setting and even library may all be good options for your Gothic style wedding search.

Gothic Renaissance Wedding Budget Priorities

When it comes to Gothic wedding planning, couples should consider what aspects of that theme are a priority. "The venue for the ceremony and reception is probably the most significant for creating that thematic vibe, so those line items may take precedence in wedding budget allocation," Dellinger says.

From there, you'll want to look at your decor, such as swaths of romantic candles across the dining tables and a branded paper goods suite with a custom wax seal. The bride's wedding dress, veil and rings may also be Gothic-inspired; Dellinger recommends long sleeves, sweeping trains and cathedral-length veils with intricate jewelry and accessories. And, depending on how committed you are to the theme, Dellinger adds that you may want to look into menu and bar options that reflect something more Renaissance in nature. Mead, anyone? 1. Western Gothic

A western-Gothic wedding captures the moodiness of the American West and is one way to do a rustic Gothic wedding. Think details like cow skulls, desert settings, ranch decor and hints of vintage Americana with some antique pieces. "Western Gothic is the perfect combination of two existing trends: moody hues and vintage Americana," Meghan Ho, social media specialist at The Knot, says. "It's a fun mix of dark, chic colors paired with rustic elements and textures."

2. Southern Gothic

"Southern Gothic is actually a genre of literature where things that are dark or have to do with death or things of that nature are romanticized and made into something elegant and alluring," Raley says. She says it's very common in Savannah, where she's located. Southern Gothic weddings draw on the grotesque and dramatic aspects of this literary style, translating it into dark-humored quotes on your wedding programs or a candlelit courtyard in a historic house.

3. Victorian Gothic

A Victorian wedding with a Gothic style is perhaps most similar to a Renaissance goth wedding because they both draw on romantic vibes with opulent details inspired by historic time periods. This sub-genre pulls from the 19th-century—think high lace necklines, moody florals and dark wood finishes like mahogany. Dellinger says that in the fall she sees more Victorian Goth wedding styles emerge—"lots of black and moody colors, lace and textures, literary play on words, dark and wild styles of florals. It's very high contrast in style."
